Preface

By the Chairman of the Governing Body

Mr Alwyn Collister

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to Ballakermeen High School Prize Day; theyear has passed so quickly. It is fourteen years since my appointment as a Governor toBallakermeen High School. I learnt a great deal in that time, originally from Mr Masterton.,Headteacher when I was appointed, and subsequently from Mrs Burnett and officers of theDepartment of Education. As a Governor I have noticed many changes in education, some of which were beyond the control of the Isle of Man. We all have our views onwhether all such developments are beneficial to the long-term improvement in the service.

One recent local development was in the House of Keys election, giving students fromsixteen years of age the right to vote, which I hope was used by many of the students.Ballakermeen quickly recognized the need for educating students in this area. They tookthe lead on the island and were given great publicity from the media in England. This wasa significant example of the way in which the education service can respond positively tochange and to the needs of the community.

Under the direction of the Head Teacher, Mrs Adrienne Burnett and the Leadership Team, the staff have ensured that Ballakermeen High School has gone from strength to strength.Life in school goes on at a fast pace and there is so much to admire, that only a selectionof achievements can be celebrated within this ceremony. I offer my congratulations to allprize winners today, but I also wish to thank all the students who do not have theopportunity to receive a prize on this stage this afternoon. So many play an important partin school life.

Twenty years ago the career you followed, when leaving education, was a job for life. Thisis no longer the case and so Ballakermeen High School strives to give the best educationpossible for children, to prepare them for the outside world. Education in secondary schoolsis increasingly an 11 to 18 experience. The result is a Sixth Form which is the largest group ofstudents Ballakermeen High School has ever had on a two year course. This is veryencouraging, but the demand it places on physical resources, such as the Common Roomand Study Area, is a challenge for the leadership. It also creates additional demands onthe staff. The results show however, the ability of the school and staff to manage, successfully, the demands of such large numbers.

While at school, students do not always appreciate how much work the staff, at all levels, put in to assist them in their education, I am sure this is not the case here. I would like to addto their appreciation that of the Governors. Thank you to the Head Teacher, LeadershipTeam and all staff including learning support, administrators, caterers, caretakers andcleaners. It is a team effort; well done!

I would also like to express my gratitude to my fellow Governors for their hard work andcontinued support during the year.

The Government’s campaign of ‘Freedom to Flourish’ is important and highlights the abilityfor the people and organizations to develop fully within our island. The added freedom thisgives to the school allows it to provide greater opportunity to all students in this school. Please make the most of it, in later life you will not regret your time at Ballakermeen HighSchool, you will certainly have the chance to flourish at this school.

Good Luck to you all.

competitions’ and a cake sale. The Autumn fair was once again a huge success, with Conister staff and students running the ‘book stall’ as usual and making over£70.00 in the process – certainly a productive evening’s work with large donations ofitems from parents and students alike.

Our Christmas assembly saw certificates or merits for fundraising, academic andsporting achievements given out, as well as Conister presenting a cheque for £500.00to the Isle of Man Special Care Baby Unit. A charity close to our hearts, it providesessential care for premature and ill babies and we are happy to once again supportthis organisation.

Some of our students (and House Manager) raised much needed money for cancercharities by participating in ‘The Walk for Life’. A rainy day but with over £100 fromMrs Lambert alone, everyone had fun and realised how fortunate we all are.Our 2nd charity to benefit from monies raised were the Isle of Man Search andRescue Dogs – being given £1,000 to continue to run, train and save the lives ofpeople caught out in the open and exposed places, by Matt Creer and his friendlydog, Lola.

Hillary Form captains, prefects and visiting speakers, have presented House assemblies. InJanuary, we had local celebrity Milky Quayle talking about the Joey DunlopFoundation; we have taken part in two bag packs at Shoprite for this charity and roseover £50 in coppers for the foundation.

We also had an assembly presented byMr Lunt – father of former Ballakermeenstudent Craig who sadly died last year ofan undiagnosed heart condition. In avery moving assembly, Mr Lunt talkedabout Craig’s life and death and whatthe Heartstrong Foundation hopes toachieve. Hillary House donated £1000 ofMemorial walk money to Mr Lunt for thecharity.

Charity has been a huge focus this year. Money has been raised and donated to theJoey Dunlop Foundation, Craig Lunt Heartstrong Foundation, medicines sansfrontiers, Food Aid and our chosen house charity project of sponsoring a child forwhich several tutor groups have raised money through cake sales and sponsoredsilences.

Langness HouseOver the past nine months, Langness has developed strong links with the localcommunity. We were strongly represented at November’s Poppy Day celebrationsand torchlight parade, working with other community groups and many warveterans. Langness students were also involved with the Tynwald Day marchingcelebrations, representing the school with aplomb.

The House has formed a very close friendship with The Manx Foundation for thePhysically Disabled. This relationship has led to many students becoming involvedwith community events. Langness students have helped with Shoprite bag packingsession, a Christmas fair held at the Villa Marina and have created art pieces fordisplay. In June students were busy collecting sponsorship for the EdinburghMarathon. It was rewarding that the house raised over £1000 for The ManxFoundation for the Physically Disabled.

This fundraising effort, coupled with monies raised from the toy stall at the Autumn fairand Jeans 4 Genes day, have illustrated how generous and supportive Langness is ofcommunity and charitable events. In all, raising £1,800 this year.

Langness assemblies have allowed House members to be kept informed of all thework they have done and success they have achieved. Assembly time has also beenused for guest speakers, particularly from The Manx Foundation for the PhysicallyDisabled and The Star Club. We have also discussed current affairs surroundingLangness in this time, for example the media reports regarding Jeremy Clarkson andhis Langness cottage.

Maughold Starting off in October, Maughold organised Jeans 4 Genes day where over £1500was raised to help children with genetic disorders. Both pupils and teachers jumpedinto their jeans for the day, paying £1 and making further contributions throughoutthe day. Our representative who picked up the cheque was overwhelmed with ourefforts.

During the Autumn Term, fund-raising began again with our successful Bric-a-Bracstall at Ballakermeen’s Autumn Fair. We received many contributions and sold apleasing amount of stock. Maughold House made the most hampers that were alsosold at the fair and 9MD3 won prizes for the best hamper and the most number ofhampers made in one tutor group.

For the Remembrance Day Parade, the majority of the students were from MaugholdHouse and represented the school wonderfully. Dressed impeccably, Ballakermeenstudents stood out a mile!

Our Maughold students in M2 organised a cake sale raising nearly £80, whichenabled them to adopt a dolphin. Maughold will play a part in keeping dolphinsalive to never become extinct.

We have carried on from last year supporting the Cambodian Children’s RefugeCentre. We donated £1000 to the charity from donations of the memorial walk. Thiswill enable the school to buy 8 more computers to the 8 Maughold previously bought. This will aid the school in many ways as they can have up to 60 pupils in a classroomat one time.

Patrick We have been very busy: Mrs Perry’s form 7PB2 organised a magnificent event thatincluded a tombola, cake sale, and various other stalls for Multiple Sclerosis. Theyraised over £280! Mr Fraser’s form have continued to excel by organising a raffle fora football for The Polish Orphans, raising over £130, and are currently looking at waysof raising money for the Mann Cat Sanctuary. Prizes have continued to be awardedto the best students, e.g. good manners, sports, good grades, attendance, etc. MrsFoxon`s tutor group 13PPS3 held a cake sale and raised over £50 for Water Aid. Theseare but a selection of the many events.

The Memorial Walk money was divided amongst four of the Islands charities:Macmillan Nurses at the Hospice, who will use the money to help people sufferingfrom terminal illnesses; The Red Cross, who will use the money to help people withdisabilities by providing wheelchairs and transport; St Johns Ambulance, who will usethe money to continue providing first aid cover for teenagers sports events and firstaid training. Moreover, we gave money to sponsor the baby Tapir at the Wildlife Park.

The Autumn Fair was another success; we managed to raise over £120 selling videosand DVD’s. The attendance and collection of donations this year was once againgreat, especially the hampers! Also the Shoe Box Appeal was well supported byPatrick students, who managed to bring in over 40 completed shoeboxes.
