at the end of this week, you will see the Balinese flock into the streets in colorful traditional costumes while carrying sacred temple objects, bright-colored parasols and tall banners in the annual sea-bound and lake-bound purification march of melasti.
The sight, which naturally triggers massive traffic congestion and exhilarating photo-ops, is a sign that the island is ready to welcome the hindu caka new Year, which falls on march 9 this year.
The celebration includes a very boisterous new Year’s Eve street parade and an extremely quiet new Year’s Day. The latter is known as nyepi, (Day of Silence), during which the island’s residents are prohibited from venturing outside their houses and lighting any fires.
To a certain extent, it reflects the Balinese character. We love to finish things with a loud bang and embrace new things with meditative trepidation.

on the eve of nyepi (hindu Day of Silence), demons will roam the streets of Bali in the earsplitting parade known as ngerupuk. groups
of Balinese youths, mostly associated with local banjar (traditional neighborhood associations), will flaunt their respective renditions of the demons, from the old-school ogres of hindu myths to the contemporary corrupt bureaucrats, in the shape of giant papier-mâché figures called ogoh-ogoh. For years, the parade has become the proving ground for the youths’ aesthetic creativity, communal spirit and bold innovation — last year’s demons were accompanied by gamelan and deep house techno. This year, ngerupuk will fall on the night of march 8.

“The future of work is here!” was the tagline of the coworking Unconference asia (cUasia), an event that brought together all the movers and shakers from the world of coworking and innovation in
asia and beyond. Initiated by hubud: Ubud coworking & community Space
— Bali’s first coworking space and community hub, cUasia was designed to enable participants to explore new ways of learning, working and living in the new collaborative economy, as well as helping redesign the way of working.
attendees shared different views on the business models of the future as coworking across the asia-Pacific region becomes increasingly competitive and spaces diverge in strategy, offering more choice to this new wave of workers.
Steve munroe, founder of hubud, initiated the event in January last year after experiencing first-hand the rise of the coworking movement around the globe.
In Indonesia, the number of entrepreneurs is growing rapidly and the coworking style is fast becoming the norm.
Bali itself has surprisingly taken a lead role in coworking advocacy in Indonesia and Southeast asia, with 10 spaces currently and more on the way.
Travelling from 31 countries, including the US, South Korea, mongolia, India, cambodia and australia, attendees in the event’s second year reached 220 people.
munroe said the increased attendance reflected the surging interest in coworking across the continent.
“asia has seen an explosion of growth in coworking over the last 12 months, with new spaces opening every week. It’s fascinating to see how different spaces are reacting to the challenges and opportunities posed by this new world of work.”
Singapore is now home to 45 coworking spaces, while Bali, Koh lanta and Jeju island are experiencing a rise in “coworkation” spaces.
This year’s cUasia, held from Feb. 24 to 28, covered a range of subjects and was hosted in different locations in Bali — at Kumpul coworking Space, hubud, ayung resort and green School.
The coworking academy pre-event, which was held in hubud, was a full-day workshop on how to create and manage a successful coworking space.
more than half of the participants, who are planning to open their own coworking spaces, received tangible tools and templates to help execute what they had learned.
coworking spaces have been dubbed the “laboratory for the future of work” with the rise of location-independent businesses and the freelance economy.
The workplace of the future is quickly changing and those who are the most successful will not only find new creative ways to work, but also meaningful work in environments that allow easy collaboration with like-minded people.

Tending to the wining and dining needs of its discerning guests, including during its happy hour and ladies’ night, last week’s packed VIn+ Seminyak schedule saw the midweek launch of
chef Theodorus Setyo’s exiting new menu, followed on Friday evening by his third exclusive wine dinner.
The heavily revised menu is now clearly positioned to bridge the culinary gap between east and west with a range of excellent international and pan-asian dishes. It features dishes to nibble on, such as a range of tapas and a charcuterie board, as well as signature sandwiches like the delicious crumbed dory fish with mesclun salad. There’s also the traditional BlT and the excellent Balinese-inspired ciabatta crammed with grilled betutu chicken, plus a host of other options.
For a more substantial meal, choose from barramundi kari, tongseng kambing or the popular babi kecap — grilled soy marinated pork belly with turmeric coconut broth, buttered vegetables and lyonnais potato. With wine by the bottle or glass, plus beers, cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages, the chilled ambience of VIn+ Seminyak suits a relaxed lunch or dinner.
The monthly intimate wine dinners are usually held on the last Friday of each month; booking is highly recommended. The four-course dinner plus wines costs rp 390,000 net (US$29.28) and is very popular.
on the night, against a background of easy listening live music, the amuse bouche was battered mussel served with a fresh and fruity sparkling Trivento. Following was Theo’s take on the classic street food martabak telur paired with a young Villa maria Sauvignon Blanc, a light wine from new Zealand’s most awarded
winery that complimented the pan-fried spicy meat pancake nicely.
From the ocean came a succulent seared barramundi served with sautéed spiced papaya, paired with the award-winning monterey county chardonnay from the Irony winery in napa Valley. Irony is one of a growing number of small lot producers making headway in Indonesia and, like all the wines, is available from VIn+ Seminyak to drink in or buy at the retail outlet to take home.
next was buntil, a traditional Javanese dish with grated coconut mixed with anchovies and spices wrapped in papaya leaves, served with a grilled jumbo prawn and aromatic nasi lemak paired with Vasse Felix Filius cabernet merlot. This young blend, from one of margaret river’s best and original producers, was heavy with blackcurrant and oak, offering elegance and finesse rather than the power one might have expected — it paired beautifully with the buntil.
Wrapping up the impressive feast was a contemporary pie susu served with mixed berries and raspberry sorbet, paired surprisingly but beautifully with an australian Bin 808 red Pecha Kucha, notable for its smooth sweetness and playful labeling; it was a pleasing end to a memorable dinner.

on a bright sunny Saturday last week, a perfect time to go shopping, some 500 or more people lined up for several hours
in front of h&m’s flagship store at mal Bali galeria, waiting for the Swedish fashion retailer to throw open its doors.
at 10 a.m. sharp, the Balinese traditional welcome dance Panyembrama marked the start of the opening ceremony.
Followed by the popular kecak dance, a man dressed as hanuman from the epic ramayana handed over scissors to the guests of honor to cut the ribbon, symbolizing that the store was open to the public.
anil malhotra, country manager of PT hindo — the franchised operator of h&m Indonesia, and store manager Jenefer lizaba, along with their guests of honor, welcomed the excited crowd of shoppers into h&m’s first store in Bali.
“This has been a wonderful opening for us. We have received an amazing response from our customers. We look forward to continue bringing them fashion and quality at the best price in a sustainable way,” commented malhotra.
The global brand, which is known for its edgy fashion and good value, has been keen to open in Bali, seeing the island’s potential not only as one of the best tourist destinations in the world but also to further offer inspiring fashion at unbeatable value for money.

last Saturday saw the grand opening of the gorgeous Padma resort Ubud, a venue selected for its stunning landscape and contours before even
one brick was put in place. Situated in Payangan, adjacent to the
village of Puhu, Padma resort Ubud is only 45 kilometers from Denpasar — a drive of approximately one-and-a-half hours, and 57 km from the airport. You could not imagine a landscape any more different between the two locations.

For the opening weekend, executive chef Ketut Sumerta — a native of Puhu village who has honed his skills in five-star restaurants and hotels around the world, laid on a sumptuous buffet spread for lunch. The display stands in Puhu restaurant & lounge groaned under the vast array of delicacies made in house by the kitchen team and the guests wondered how that night’s gala dinner could be any better. however, to accompany the grand opening press conference was a heavenly fine-dining repast.
Fortunately for our health, Padma resort Ubud has a fitness center, sunrise and sunset yoga and a 3.4-km jogging track that wends its way through the valley so we could work off some calories. For the more energetic, the resort also offers a two-and-a-half hour village trek to enjoy the natural flora, fauna and culture as you journey up and down hills and into the village, where you can visit the local temple and market.

in the gym, I was more than happy to venture into the quirky cave-like spa structure — surely left by Smurfs or Teletubbies — for a reviving massage. Using high quality products, the trained therapist soothed my tired muscles and restored my body, ready for whatever the day would bring.

around the world will be able to witness a rare natural phenomenon — a total solar eclipse, which will be visible from many parts of the Indonesian archipelago.
These two significant events will draw people to Bali.
The Westin resort nusa Dua Bali is offering a special nyepi package for visitors choosing to spend quality time with their loved ones and enjoy the serenity of nyepi — a day for soul renewal.
In Bali, the caka new Year is viewed as a new doorway to a spiritually enlightened and enriched soul, it is a time for self-contemplation while performing catur berata penyepian, or
the four abstinences — amati geni (no lights); amati karya (no work); amati lelanguan (no leisure pursuits) and amati lelungan (no travel outside the home), for 24 hours.
a few days before the Day of Silence, Balinese hindus will hold a series of elaborate rituals, starting with melasti — a procession of temple paraphernalia taken to the ocean for purification and mass prayers to purify the body and soul.
Mecaru is the ritual of cleaning the home and village and is required to appease evil spirits that may disturb the universe’s harmony.
on new Year’s Eve, the local youths hold a ritual called Tawur Kesanga, or Pengerupuk, to drive away all evil spirits. The evil spirits are embodied in the form of devilish figures known locally as ogoh-ogoh and have bulging eyes, gigantic bodies and scary faces. at the end of the evening, the great majority of these effigies are burned to symbolize victory over evil.

netizens from the Bali Blogger community (BBc) hosted a blood drive in recognition of Valentine’s Day last Sunday, inviting residents to take part in various fun
activities while expressing solidarity by donating blood.
During only two-and-a-half hours, the organizer managed to collect 31 packs of blood to be donated to Tabanan regency’s red cross. Some of the participants were first-time donors. This annual event is also part of the Denpasar city anniversary celebrations.
In addition, BBc also invited a number of community-based organizations to present their programs to the public.
among them was Sobat Budaya Bali, which campaigned for the importance of culture documentation. There was also the Bali chapter of Kelompok Peduli Schizophrenia Indonesia (KPSI), a group that provides assistance and counseling for people with schizophrenia.
Psychiatrists in this group presented information on the counseling program for people with this
disorder, especially those in underprivileged families. The program is open for public participation as volunteers or “buddies” to the ill.
“They should not be confined; rather, they should be encouraged to be productive. Therefore we need volunteers,” said event coordinator happy ari Setyani about the initiative.
other organizations did not want to miss the opportunity to present their programs and activities to the public in the hope of getting more people involved in their initiatives.
During the event, the public could register with organizations they were interested in and become volunteers, give donations or establish partnerships.
The event also featured a talk show about Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional (JKn), the national health insurance scheme, in which netizens encouraged the audience to get involved in monitoring the program. Sloka Institute, one of the organizations taking part in the event, is cooperating with the Bali health agency to improve JKn’s information system, which handles patient complaints.

Tall, handsome and with the sculpted body of a Muay-Thai practitioner, he exudes the bad-boy aura of a rock star — well, he has had his
share of screaming poignant lyrics on stage, but Marmar Herayukti is anything but bad. He doesn’t even smoke — a numero uno prerequisite here to be a bad boy.
The soft-spoken tattoo and visual artist has gained growing popularity and a following among Denpasar’s youths for his relentless campaign on eco-friendly ogoh-ogoh, the giant figures the local youths craft and parade on the night before the Day of Silence.
Since its advent in the 1980s, the ogoh-ogoh parade has become a status symbol for the youth groups of the local traditional communities. They try to outdo each other by creating the biggest and most elaborate ogoh-ogoh around. In the last decade, polystyrene foam, locally known as styrofoam, has been adopted as the
preferred material, giving the young artists a substance that is easy to shape and carve; it also cuts production time considerably.
However, it is also a very damaging material to the environment and a possible human carcinogen.
“Back in 2012, the local youths in my banjar [traditional hamlet] were still using polystyrene.”
Marmar persuaded them to change. It was a gradual process that peaked in 2014, when they totally ditched polystyrene and re-embraced the old method of crafting ogoh-ogoh using plaited bamboo, wood, paper pulp and metal rods.
The production process was much longer as the youths had to re-learn the skill of ngulat (weaving) the bamboo strips, and it also took more people to craft a single ogoh-ogoh.

because it requires more people to work together for a single purpose. A polystyrene ogoh-ogoh could be finished by a team of four people.”
Soon Marmar was busy talking with youths from neighboring hamlets, and later on from across Denpasar, about the danger of polystyrene and the beauty of the old ways. He also shared the required skills of ngulat with streams of interested youngsters who sought his advice.
“I share and do not impose anything. I believe that people have the capacity to find the best way, to sort things out and find methods that are in harmony with nature.”
His gentle and lead-by-example approach has won him support at every corner, including from the Denpasar mayor, who provides funds for the annual ogoh-ogoh competition.
Today, the use of eco-friendly material is an important norm in the competition and nearly all hamlets in the municipality have abandoned polystyrene in the making of ogoh-ogoh.
“Our life will be purer if we strive to inflict as little damage as possible on Mother Nature,” Marmar stated.
