The Leeds firm of Greenwood & Batley, founded in 1856, supplied coining presses and associated machinery to a number of foreign mints. In February 1905 their agents in India, Duncan, Stratton & Co. of Bombay, ordered six coining presses at £275 each on behalf of H.H. The Nizam of Hyderabad’s mint. These were delivered in February 1906. The proving pieces struck from the new machinery were ostensibly to the size and weight of the rupee, half, quarter and eighth-rupee denominations. Paul Hayward believed that, in 30 years of collecting, the coin now his was the only specimen of the quarter-rupee he had encountered. However, by some curious chance, four others have appeared in recent auctions: Heritage, 16 January 2018 (lot 35156); DNW, 14 November 2018 (lot 1744 – 2 examples); and Stephen Album, 17 January 2019 (lot 1663).

As 1903 was the first year that the Indian mints struck coins for Edward VII for circulation, there was some discussion at Calcutta for the proper finish of the coin. The Matte finish had become the choice for the coins struck at the Royal Mint, but this didn’t mean that the Colonial Mints had to necessarily follow. Calcutta took it upon itself to strike this date with a Matte Finish as well as a Brilliant Finish. (The Brilliant Proof is much rarer, seemingly 3 or 4 Matte, to 1 of the Brilliant.).

As the Edward coinage ‘tended’ to be available in nice grades, there seemed to be little call from the collectors at the time to fill in the missing dates. Date sets became the common way for interested collectors to get these coins, so no hard evidence is available from the single dates known to gauge a rarity. We do know that because of the little interest in attaining rarities, few pieces were struck for serious collectors of the time. The Montagues and the Murdochs and their appetites for ‘everything’ were gone, replaced by more collectors turning to specific areas as prices increased and the Victorian-age desire to have coins from around the world subsided. This partially explains the lack of Original Proof and Early Proof Restike coins for Edward. The first “Restrike” occurred in 1908 and the 2 mints in India produced about 10 years past of their coinages to go into world museums. These were struck as Brilliant proofs so extremely hard to differentiate between original coins only struck a few years earlier. 1919 brought the next round of “Restrikes’ sent out to the few museums interested in this coinage. These were also struck to the full Proof standard of the day, but with these we start to see some of the characteristics of a die that had been in storage for some time. (mostly slight rust marks). They were struck in extremely small quantities and availability outside of museums.

The mintmark on the Edward VII Proof Restrike coins are not consistently indicative of where the coin was struck. Calcutta had sent all of their dies to Bombay sometime after 1952 as that mint closed down. Sometime after 1955, the Restrike’s availability became known to the general collecting public and they took it upon themselves to order the dates of coins that had shown to be unavailable to the market. This explains why there are quite a number of the restrike 1835 2-mohur coins, as the Bombay mint had to be supplied with the necessary physical gold and a striking premium in order to obtain this important type coin.

KM lists 200,000 of this coin being struck. The vast majority were melted down so the date is more likely properly described as a Pattern. Pridmore listed the 1906 as a Pattern (Pr-1072) and as a coin struck for circulation (Pr-925). It appears these are the same coin. The finish of this coin is that of a circulating coin. It is possible this was struck in sufficient quantities to be used as an advertising piece for the new coinage set to start in 1907. Due to the nice grades of the pieces known, this did not see much, if any circulation.
