HARI OM!

Dear Children,

From the Lord, when we reached here, we

came as a good child of light.

But as we live among others, the animal in us

comes up and we become bad children of dark-

ness.

To avoid this fall, we must always remember the

great Lord of Love, the flute player of Jamuna

(Yamuna) banks.

Balavihar is meant for this.

With the song of the glorious Lord in your heart, grow to be great men and

women of our country. The country needs you; you deserve a great coun-

try."

-Swami Chinmayananda

Dear Parents,

"Children are lamps to be lit, not vessels to be filled. Children are the archi-

tects of the future world. They are the builders of humanity. It is the most

sacred task of parents as well as teachers to mould their lives in accordance

with the sublime Indian tradition. The seeds of spiritual values should be

sown in young hearts and the condition should be made favorable for its

sprouting and steady growth by the exercise of proper control and disci-

pline. Cared for with warmth of love and affection, such a tree shall blossom

forth flowers of Brotherhood, Universal Love, Peace, Bliss, Beauty and Per-

fection".

-Swami Chinmayananda

HARI OM!

The greatest boon given by Pujya Gurudev

Swami Chinmayananda to the younger gener-

ation is Balavihar.

Balavihar provides a spiritual and cultural ori-

entation to the children of the modern age.

The rationale of the Balavihars as elucidated

by Pujya Gurudev Tejomayanandaji in the

"March of the future" talk is summarized

below:

To train the children and inculcate in them the reverence for

our ancient culture, and inspire them to live up to it with cor-

rect understanding.

· To create self-confidence to serve and act cheerfully.

· To generate a true affection in all contacts, inculcate person-

al discipline and a true spirit of leadership.

· To mould their capacity to express and assert their individu-

ality.

· To bring out their dormant faculties and detect defects; culti-

vate and improve their creative abilities.

· To help children to develop a healthy resistance against

temptations in the atmosphere in which they grow.

· To provide an atmosphere to grow with noble ideals, healthy

emotions and physical discipline.

September 2015

Blessed Self, Hari Om! Salutations! It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Chinmaya Mission’s

Weekend programs: the Balavihar, Yuva Kendra, Adult Study Group and

Language classes – at Chinmaya Vrindavan. As indicated previously,

our programs will be established in three sessions, plus one for languages.

The tremendous growth and success of the Balavihar, Yuva Kendra, the

Adult Study Group and Language Classes program is made possible by our

volunteers who work tirelessly to provide constant enrichment and learn-

ing for children and adults. The impact of Eastern and Western cultures

on our families brings about many challenges and opportunities for chil-

dren growing up in America and parents raising families in America. We

have seen the long term benefits of active participation in Balavihar and

Adult Study Group make a big difference in enriching families and our

community.

As Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayanandaji has put it, “the purpose of Balavihar is to prepare our children to

live their lives fully; to learn how to face life as it comes to them as well as creating a life that they want.

Balavihar should give them both roots and wings.” As such, we believe that the Balavihar, Yuva Kendra,

and Adult Study Group program is essential to spiritual and cultural growth, and we are pleased that the

program includes, but is not limited to, the following:

1. A grade based program that is tuned to the mental and intellectual growth of our children. 2. An enriching program for the entire family regardless of the number of children, parents, grand-

parents 3. A dynamic program that offers numerous opportunities to explore our children’s talents in mu-

sic, drama and the performing arts - based on the wisdom of Vedanta contained in our scriptures 4. Celebration of major festivals, such as Mahasivaratri, Diwali, Rama Navami, etc., and our Annual

Geeta Chanting Competition (for children and adults) and our Annual Geeta Essay Competition (for older children)

5. Numerous service activities such as Anna Danam, CORD Walk-a-thon, and other community ser-vice projects

6. Specialized skill building programs like Math Club, teaching young students with the help of young student volunteer teachers thus enriching both in the process

We continue to improve the program so that everyone (children and adults) can obtain the maximum bene-

fit. For example, we plan to continue our program of bringing Samskritam and other languages to our chil-

dren, youth, and adults, offer interactive seminars on topics such as parenting, youth-parent relationships,

revitalizing our adult study group classes, and expand upon the existing seva/service activities through ad-

ditional community service projects.

Pujya Gurudev, Swami Chinmayanandaji, greatly stressed developing a strong identity for children and

adults alike. He was a master with great vision and He believed that religion and the inquiry into the Divine

provided the substance for unification and the true recipe for happiness. I encourage you to share the Mis-

sion’s programs with other families and let them also benefit through their participation.

Welcoming you with Prem and Om!

Swami Shantananda

Adult study groups

Mere listening will not add to your beauty. These ideas are to be reflected upon deeply and digested slowly. This process is hastened only when you discuss what you have studied with others. Study Groups constitute the heart of our Mission

—-Swami Chinmayananda

The table below describes the details of the topics that would be discussed in the respective adult study groups

Self Unfoldment

By

Swami Chinmayananda

The book Self Unfoldment written by Pujya Swami Chinmayananda is an extensive manual that elucidates the whole topic of Vedanta in simple layman’s language. The book is filled with simple examples which illustrate complex Vedantic concepts like BMI chart, Karma, Gunas, Pancha Kosha, meditation and many other topics. Every chapter ends with with a set of questions and references for further reading from the Holy Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads and other Vedantic texts. The greatness of this book lies in the fact that it does not only discuss Vedantic philosophies academically but also provides real life examples of how this philosophy can be applied in real life by the aspirant to gain the ultimate happiness which is within us. Anyone who reads and absorbs the contents of this book gets a very firm footing on the spiritual path and his/her doubts vanish due to the simple handling of topics.

Tattva Bodha

By

Adi Shankaracharya

Vedanta is the science of life and when properly understood and applied, is the an-swer to the problem of human suffering. Tattva Bodha is a prakarana grantha, written in simple samskritham, provides clear definitions of Vedantic terms like nitya, anitya, viveka, vairagya, maya etc.

It also clearly defines the necessary preparation a student of Vedanta must undertake to truly benefit from this knowledge. The sum total of all Vedantic analysis is present-ed vividly in this book to gain the above objectives.

Adult Study groups—Topics contd...

Upadesa Saram

By

Ramana Maharshi

Upadesa Saram, literally meaning ‘essence of all teaching’ is a profound book written by Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi. It summarizes the paths of Karma, Bhakti, Ashtanga and Jnana Yoga. Ramana Maharshi was undoubtedly one of the greatest sages of the 20th century whose influence spread far and wide. Upadesa Saram brings out the simple message of the Maharshi in a pithy and beautiful manner.

Bhagavad Geeta Commentary

by

Swami Chinmayananda

If the Upanishads are the text books of philosophical principles discussing man, world and God, the Bhagavad Geeta is a handbook of instructions as to how every human being can come to live the subtle philosophical principlaes in the actual work-a-day world. Srimad Bhagavad Geeta, the Divine song of the Lord, occurs in the Bhisma Parva of the Mahabharata. This great hand-book of practical living marked a positive revolution in Hinduism and inaugu-rated a Hindu renaissance for the ages that followed the Puranic era.

Vision of Bhagavad Gita

By

Swami Tejomayananda

This illuminating commentary by Swami Tejomayananda on selected verses from Bhagavad Gita shows how inner wisdom enables us to maintain mental balance while dynamically acting in the world. His teachings are profound, yet simple, but above all relevant in today's world. He guides us on how to base our choices on the vision Oneness and Truth so that we can revitalize and enliven every aspect of our lives.

Kindle Life

By

Swami Chinmayananda

A preliminary text of Vedantic studies, this work lays a very good foundation for all advanced studies. Full of guidance for right living, the book inspires every reader to pursue true spirituality. The language here is simple, yet forceful. Avoiding Technical jargon, Pujya Gurudev initiates us into the essen-tials of a higher, value-based life. Organized into over thirty lessons or es-says, the material here is ideal for a novice. Of course, advanced students would also find the teachings here very refreshing.

We stand as one family,

bound to each other with love and respect.

We serve as an army,

courageous and disciplined,

ever ready to fight against all low tendencies

and false values, within and without us.

We live honestly

the noble life of sacrifice and service,

producing more than what we consume

and giving more than what we take.

We seek the Lord’s grace

to keep us on the path of virtue, courage and wis-

dom.

May thy grace and blessings flow through us

to the world around us.

We believe that the service of our country

is the service of the Lord of Lords,

and devotion to the people

is devotion to the supreme Self.

We know our responsibilities

Give us the ability and courage to fulfill them.

CHINMAYA PLEDGE

“It is said that pujya gurudev Swami Chinmayananda wrote the pledge in less than 15 minutes after the

devotees asked him for a code of conduct soon after the mission was formed on August 9, 1953 in Chennai,

India,” said All India Chinmaya Yuva Kendra director Swami Mitrananda.

Chinmaya Swaranjali is a group of talented youth musicians selected from among

our balavihar students by an audition to sing bhajans at various Balavihar/ashram events. Mentored and coached by adult Chinmaya sevaks, the children have helped

create bhakti bhava among audiences singing prior to Swamiji's discourses on Ve-danta,and at various festivals. The group meets on Sundays to practice from 11.15

am to 12.15 pm on all Sundays that balavihar is in session. Drawing on the beauty of devotional poetry in various Indian languages, the children have touched hearts with

their renditions of Mirabai, Namdev, Kabir, Narsin Mehta, Tulasidas and our guruji Swami Tejomayanandaji

What we provide- sevaks with a large repository of bhajans.

What we ask for-the students' regular attendance and practice of songs taught to

be able to sing confidently and with feeling as one voice.

Both vocalists and instrumentalists with some form of classical training are welcome.

Language classes are offered at the Chinmaya vrindavan for children enrolled in

the Bala Vihar program. The language classes are conducted in the interval between

the AM and PM Bala Vihar sessions on sundays (11:15 am to 12:15 pm) The lan-

guage class curriculum is designed to enable children to communicate (speak, Read

and write) with members of their extended family, particular-

ly elders, in their native language, and thereby develop

stronger bonds with them.

For each language, children are grouped into classes on the bases of language proficiency and age, while maintaining

class size at an optimum level. Active participation of children in the class is encouraged to foster learning; parents are re-

quested to assist as needed.

Currently, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Malayalam, Gujarati, Kannada and Sanskrit classes are offered for Bala Vihar children at chinmaya vrinda-

van. Sanskrit is also available for Adults.

Feel free to contact our language classes coordinator Purnima krishna-murthy ( [email protected] ), if you have any further questions.

Our gurus – Gurudev, Guruji and Swamiji – helped in estabilishing this wonderful Chinmaya organization and

with your collective support Chinmaya Vrindavan has become a reality today. Pujya Gurudev in his immense wis-

dom gave us a simple motto “To give maximum happiness to the maximum number for the maximum time”. Eve-

rything that we do in the Temple, Balavihar Classes, Adult Study groups and Seva projects is directed towards this

goal. To sustain this environment and tradition for us and the next generation we need support from dedicated

families like yours.

Chinmaya Parivar is a joint family of the members of Chinmaya Mission created with a vision to enhance and pro-

mote the objective of the Chinmaya Mission. Joint family has been a cornerstone of Indian culture. They are the

first training grounds for interpersonal skills, to learn lessons of patience, tolerance, cooperation and adjustment.

Chinmaya Parivar will provide a forum for all members to practice our pledge to

Stand as one family

Serve as an army

Live honestly

Seek the Lord’s grace

Service to the society and country

Fulfill our responsibilities

Chinmaya Vrindavan requests you to register as a 'Chinmaya Parivar' member.

The Chinmaya Parivar membership includes Balavihar fees for all the children in the household and it has some

other unique ways of saying thank you.
