Balance assessment and exercise prescription Principles for Pilates practitioners: Level 1 Friday 22nd February 2013 The Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine invites you to attend a Level 1 Pilates workshop in February 2013. About the workshop Why are balance exercises so important? 25% of people in their 60’s & 40% of people in their 70’s suffer at least one fall each year 1 . Targeted exercise can reduce a person’s chance of falling by 40% 2 . Who should attend this course? People who are using Pilates in their day-to-day clinical practice. Practitioners working with older people who are keen to ensure the exercises they provide achieve the maximum benefit for improving balance. It is expected that course participants have a background in and understanding of Pilates principles and are familiar with Pilates equipment. Why should I attend this course? This workshop will provide you with the skills and tools required to effectively identify people at risk of falling and prescribe targeted and effective exercise to reduce this risk. We will provide you with: An update on the research evidence; Education and training in use of key falls risk screening assessments; Assessment forms that you can use in your practice; and Exercise and information handouts for patients. Facilitator details Dr Anna Barker is an experienced falls prevention researcher at Monash University and continues to work clinically as a Physiotherapist. She has completed falls prevention projects in community, residential aged care and hospital settings. She is currently leading what is planned to be the world’s largest falls prevention trial. Anna has developed a strong clinical interest in the management of older people having completed a Masters in Geriatrics and a PhD on falls. Ms Meghan Ambrens is a member of Dr Anna Barker’s research team, working as the Project Manager on the Pilates falls and bone health trial. With a background in Myotherapy and Pilates Rehabilitation, Meghan continues to work clinically as a Pilates Instructor and is interested in the prescription of exercise for falls prevention and bone health. Ms Georgie Rose is a Physiotherapist and has worked across the acute and sub-acute settings in Victoria and New South Wales. More recently she has followed her interest in falls prevention and joined the Centre of Research Excellence in Patient Safety at Monash University where she is employed as a Research Assistant on the Pilates falls and bone health trial and the 6-PACK Falls Prevention trial.
