Given the massive amounts of antibiotics coursing through the bodies of our livestocknot tomention its use and misuse by humansone would think soil would be teeming with the drugs.

But this isnt the case, and now scientists may know why: Theyre being devoured by bacteria.

Harvard researchers stumbled upon this finding while trying to find microbes that could convertagricultural waste into biofuels. The scientists wanted to make sure they had a good controla

group of bacteria that didnt grow at allso they bathed some of the bacteria in antibiotics. Butthere was a problem: The bacteria didnt just survive in the antibiotics, they consumedthem. The

researchers then gathered soil from 11 sites with varying degrees of exposure to human-madeantibiotics (from manure-filled cornfields to an immaculate forest) and found that every site

contained bacteria, including relatives ofShigella and the notoriousE. coli that could survivesolely on antibiotics. And these werent just piddling dosesthe bacteria could tolerate levels of

antibiotics that were up to 100 times higher than would be given to a patient, and 50 times higher

than what would qualify a bacterium as resistant.

Bakteri Pun Berkomunikasi Sebelum Menyerang Tubuh Inangnya

Jumat, 02 Juli 2010.

    lainnya.

We talk about things are invisible bacteria are basicly invisible to our eyes and yet we coveredwith them. They honest, illnest, they everywhere. The scientist known about bacteria for hundred

years and what bacteria are primitive single cell organism with grow twice in the middle, Onebecame two and the other things. Bacteria is social organism, we thought no possibility for

bacteria could accomplish all the things they manage like making a sick (that terrible things butalso makes a lot wonderfull things). One bacteria could influence their environment. And what

we showed what Quorum Sensing is bacteria making a release tiny molecule, like hormone, thatmolecule grow in the outside of the cell. The other bacteria detect this molecule, all bacteria

change their bahaviour in unity. So that they carry on the new task as group not for individualtask like you want to move a piano. U dont do it for ur self butu call ur friend and 1..2..3 u

move the piano and every body does it together. So we called Quorum Sensing. And They(bacteria) said we have enough to do it. And they do it. Whatever it is

the bacterial communication phenomenon that we study is called quorum sensing, which is a

process that allows bacteria to communicate using secreted chemical signaling molecules calledautoinducers. This process enables a population of bacteria to collectively regulate gene

expression and, therefore, behavior. In quorum sensing, bacteria assess their population densityby detecting the concentration of a particular autoinducer, which is correlated with cell density.

This census-taking enables the group to express specific genes only at particular populationdensities. Quorum sensing is widespread; it occurs in numerous Gram-negative and Gram-

positive bacteria. In general, processes controlled by quorum sensing are ones that areunproductive when undertaken by an individual bacterium but become effective when

undertaken by the group. For example, quorum sensing controls bioluminescence, secretion ofvirulence factors, sporulation, and conjugation. Thus, quorum sensing is a mechanism that allows

bacteria to function as multi-cellular organisms

Hold The Antibiotics: Infections Critical For Healthy Life

    By Julia Whitty

Nix the antibacterial soaps. Forget the hand

sanitizers, antibiotic gels, sprays, and baby blankets. Research shows that antibacterial productsactually make children and adults more likely to develop asthma and allergies and maybe even

mental illnesses. The study from Colorado State University suggests that our love affair with

antibacterial products is altering how immune, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems develop andfunction. Infection may play a significant role in many chronic aliments, includingschizophrenia, ulcers, and obsessive compulsive disorder. What many people may not realize is

that most infections ensure our health instead of compromise it. Humans have 10 times morebacterial cells in their bodies than human cells. Without bacteria, there would not be humans.

Gerald Callahan, who studies bacteria and infectious diseases at Colorado State University, points out that there are more bacteria by far in this world than any other living thing. "We are aminority on this planet, and we must learn how to work with the majority," he says.
