n March 14 and15, even the theater is child’splay at California State University, Bakersfieldwhen the theater department presents “GoldFever” at the Doré Arena Theatre, 9001 Stock-dale Hwy. The play, written by Rita Grauerand John Urquhart, will be directed by Kamala
Kruszka.Designed for young audiences, the performance
humorously blends Old West history and legend to makea powerful statement about the conflict between person-al greed and compassion for others. Set during the his-
toric California gold rush, “Gold Fever” brings togetherBen Holladay, best known as the stagecoach king, andthe notorious highwayman Black Bart. After failing tostrike it rich, Bart turns to robbing Holladay’s stage-coaches. The ensuing misadventures reveal to both char-acters that gold fever can make a man mad!
Performances are noon, 2 and 4 p.m. on Saturday,March 14, and noon and 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 15.Tickets are $5 and children 12 and under are free. Seat-ing is limited. Call 654-6070 for reservations and infor-mation.

or all of you won-derful people whoare following,“You’ve Made MyDay” it has hap-pened again!
I know many of you willrelate to Day Maker 3,because you have eitherbeen the giver of the gooddeed or the receiver. I amalmost positive that every-one who has ever shoppedbefore has been in this situ-ation at one time in theirlife. In the past, it was I whowas the giver of the gooddeed in this situation. How-ever, on this special day, itwas I who was the receiver, and again my faith in the“goodness of people” (espe-cially my fellow Bakers-field residents) has beenproven!
Day Maker 3I feel a little guilty about
accepting this good deed! You see, I am a recoveringprocrastinator, and
because of my relapse onthis day, I found myselfrunning late to work with-out the goodies I wasassigned to bring for ourstaff meeting. (I knewweeks ahead of time aboutbringing the goodies).
I decided to stop at aFoodMaxx on my way towork to purchase the good-ies. Who would be groceryshopping at 8:30 a.m. any-way, right? I had a gameplan, I would run in and runout. No problem. Right ... !Wrong, I was sprintingthrough the store like amad woman! I knew what Iwanted, and retrieved mygoodies in record time.
I sprinted up to thecashier (in heels), whensuddenly I came face toface with my worse night-mare. You guessed it —only one cashier, three peo-ple in line and an overflow-ing grocery cart!
As I walked up, I wit-nessed the nice couple withthe cart — allowing otherpeople holding items (pos-sibly recovering procrasti-nators like myself) to goahead of them. I tried not tolook desperate — after all,it wasn’t their fault I wasrunning late.
The clock’s hand wasticking away ... tick, tick, tick! The gentleman madeeye contact with me a cou-ple of times, but lookedaway. I expected nothing,he had already did his gooddeed for the day.
Tick, tick, tick! Then he turned around
and said the words I longedto hear, “Go ahead Miss, you only have a few items.”I must have done five cart-wheels (in my head, ofcourse) as I smiled andresponded, “Thank you somuch, you’ve made myday!”
I hurried to the car, vow-ing to make more of aneffort to not procrastinate, and thinking how wonder-ful that couple was.Although, on this day, Icould have avoided my situ-ation, there was still some-one who “made my day!”
With that, my missionand my journey continues.
If kindness has beenrecently bestowed on youby others or you paid it for-ward, post your story andphotos at: www.bakers-fieldvoice.com. It’s easy tocreate a free profile andbecome part of the TBVonline community.

Paving the way for a college-bound futureBY AMY LUTHERCommunity Contributor
orking from thebeginning with theidea of what if,Thompson JuniorHigh School Princi-pal Jon Dean along
with his staff introducedAdvancement Via IndividualDetermination or AVID to theirstudents.
Thompson has recently earnedthe high honor of demonstrationschool for the college promotionprogram.
Entering the campus atThompson Junior High, you willsee seventh- and eighth-graderswalking around, kids on the bas-ketball courts and teachers onduty, a typical school.
Look a little further and youcannot help but notice, thatunlike many junior highs, thereis something special about this
school. In every classroom andoffice on campus, you will see asign or a poster promoting col-lege.
Since adopting the AVID pro-gram, Thompson has grown fromhaving one class of AVID stu-dents to four classes to accom-modate their students.
These students have beenexposed to college campuses andmuseums, and a rigid curricu-lum, learning how to study, stayorganized and focus on theimportance of writing across thecurriculum.
As a result of hard work onbehalf of the Thompson staff, students and administration, this school recently received thedesignation of AVID demonstra-tion school, meaning it is every-thing an AVID school is meant tobe!
From evidence of outstandingstudent achievement to strong
leadership, and using AVID as away to improve school wide, it isvery evident that this honor iswell deserved!
To show the magnitude of thishonor, in the 2007-08 school,
there were 3,500 AVID schoolsthroughout the United States, and of those schools, only 114had met the requirements to bean demonstration school.
These schools are held to very
high standards, which requireteachers, who are a part of theprogram, to give freely of theirtime for the betterment of theprogram and their students.
It is easy to see why the pro-gram is so important. Studentswho are a part of AVID feel theygain courage and leadershipskills, which will stay with themnot only in college, but through-out life.
AVID opens doors for studentsnot only in the AVID classroom, but for students all over campus.
With four of the five juniorhigh schools in the Panama-Buena Vista Union School Dis-trict on board with AVID, and thefifth one joining next year, every-one at Thompson have helpedpave the way and set the stan-dards for excellence in educa-tion.

Educator of the Month
I’d like to nominate my twin daughters’ kindergarten teacher Mr. Rhodes who teaches at Discovery Elementary School. At the beginning of the year, I was so skeptical after having learned that they were going to have a male teacher for kindergarten. He has superseded all of my expectations as to what a great kindergarten teacher should be. My girls love Mr. Rhodes. He teaches them lots of cute and silly songs. He builds up their self-esteem. He is just so marvelous with my girls!
To submit your nominee for Educator of the Month, go to: www.northwest voice.com then click on “Post Something!” and contribute a
