2019 - 2020 Community Report

Bainbridge Public Library is the Library that our community built and continues to support.  It is unique because it is a 501(c)(3) that belongs to the people of Bainbridge Island.  As a non-profit, Bainbridge Public Library depends on donations and grants to provide funds for maintaining the building and grounds.  We have a partnership with Kitsap Regional Library, which is a property tax-supported institution, that provides the staff, collections, classes, pro-grams, and technology.  Working together, we bring you the wonderful library that you have come to expect.

Bainbridge Public Library is governed by a volunteer Board whose members contribute their experience, expertise, and love for the Library.  They are thoughtful stewards of your dona-tions as they meet the current needs and plan for the future.  I am honored to be the Pres-ident of this Board, working with this group of people who are committed to providing the best possible space for your library needs.

This year, we have worked to eradicate dry rot in the eaves of the older part of the building and re-glazed the stairwell windows.  We have been working with gutters and downspouts to redirect the water coming off the roof.  We now have a back-up generator for pumps protecting us from flooding.  A new sound system has been installed in the meeting room.  And special attention has been paid to the gardens, replacing diseased trees, mapping irri-gation systems, and increasing safety to the parking lot exits.  Our fern garden is nationally renowned.

In addition to the Board, we have 194 adults actively vol-unteering for the Library, sorting and selling books in their role of “Friends of the Library,” maintaining the gardens as “Friday Tidies,” shelving materials and straightening the shelves.  We also have six teens who help with programs.  In 2019, these wonderful people volunteered 8,568 hours valued at over $338,000.  To quote one of our librarians, “Volunteers quite literally have made this Library what it is, a cherished Island institution.”

As we look back on our past year, we are happy with all that has been accomplished thanks to the ongoing com-mitment of our volunteers and donors.

Bainbridge Public Library, a nonprofit organization, owns, operates, and maintains the library building and grounds through community donations and grants. Kitsap Regional Library provides the library staff, collection, classes, and a virtual library at KRL.org with funding from property tax revenues. Together we provide the quality library our community wants and has come to expect.

Board of Directors

The First Friday Art Walk at the library features local artists who host an artist’s reception from 5-7 p.m. This is an hour earlier than the downtown Art Walk locations so the public can view the variety of art being exhibit-ed. Each month the exhibit remains in the library for that month, with the library receiving a donation of 25 percent of art sales proceeds.

Art Walk

With thanks to generous donors of books and money and a band of enthusiastic, faithful volunteers, in 2019 Friends of the Bainbridge Library (BI FOL) contributed $76,000 to the Bainbridge Island Public Library.

These funds went directly into a Friends of the Library Endowment, fulfilling a critical need as the library building, garden and parking areas are entirely dependent on community donations for maintenance, repair, utilities, and capital additions. (Tax dollars pay for staff and books in an arrangement made with the Kitsap Regional Library more than 50 years ago.)

BI Friends of the Library established its Endowment in 2007 with accumulated book sale proceeds of $100,000. With exception of the recent Refresh Project, every month since Friends has transferred approximately $5,000 to the Endowment. Successful book sales plus donations through One Call for All allowed us to increase that amount several times this past year.

In addition to contributions toward the Endowment, Friends provided support to programs for children, teens and adults. We also contributed to the children’s summer reading program, the children’s story time, and maintenance of the aquarium in the children’s area. There’s more: Friends provided partial support to the popular Great Decisions program put on by Library U and contributed books to a Free Little Library at the Municipal Court.

Current board members are Linda Meier, pres-ident; Kathy Bolles, vice president; Charles Browne, treasurer; Carol Schuyler, secretary, and members Becky Donegan, Barbara Erickson, Willow Follett, Loanne Harmeling, Lois Reitz, Rebecca Robins, and Charlene Selvar.

Our wish and expectation are that the Endowment

will one day provide a source of secure income

for BPL.

Why I Give...

Last spring the kids of Winslow Co-housing on Bainbridge Island orga-nized a Bike-a-thon to raise money for the Library. Twelve children, ages 3-15, raised $365 and a group of them proudly presented it to the BPL board president in March.

The kids in the Children’s Library were asked, “Grab a heart and write or draw what you love about the library! Tape yours on our ‘I love the Library’ display board when you’re done.”

The BPL Facilities Committee (FC) is gearing up once again to tackle projects big and small over this next year. We’ve identified and prioritized several dozen projects, developed a calendar and budget, and are already underway to keep our Island gem a safe, clean, and attractive destination for the tens of thousands who visit our library every year.

Some, but not all, of our projects include:

• asphalt repair • parking lot redesign study • replace failed double pane windows • exterior lighting repairs and upgrades • complete roof gutters and downspout repairs • rebuild Japanese garden gates/fence/benches • wheelchair accessible catalog station • repair or replace the fences enclosing our HVAC mechanical equipment• and our trash & recycling totes

We’re estimating a total cost of $100,000 - $125,000 to accomplish these and numerous other tasks this year. We couldn’t do any of this without a dedicated group of volunteers, and the generous support of our donors.

The 3rd annual BLNO event took place on Thursday, February 13th and featured a panel of NW au-thors. Appetizers, desserts, and beverages were available for the over-21 crowd prior to the panel discussion with the authors. Their books were available for purchase, thanks to Eagle Harbor Books, and could be signed by the author.

Book Lover’s Night Out

This sold-out event was held on Wednesday, August 14th at Bainbridge Cinemas to benefit BPL. “The Art of Racing in the Rain,” Garth Stein’s book made into a movie, was introduced by the author followed by a Q&A after the show. Garth was available before and after the movie to sign his books.

BPL Events 2019-2020

This presentation featuring Garden Gurus Ann Lovejoy, John van den Meerendonk, John Barutt, and Charles Schafer was held Wednesday, October 23rd at Eagle Harbor Book Store. A percentage of all sales during this event benefitted BPL. Q&A included top-ics about gardening, ferns, composting, and beekeeping.

Fall Into The Garden

This series is sponsored by the Bainbridge Public Library with funding support from the Bainbridge Is-land Friends of the Library and a generous donation in memory of Louise Brody Weissman. Discussions are led by experts in their field on Saturdays, Jan-uary – mid-March at Bethany Lutheran Church. It’s free to the public, donations are appreciated.

Great Decisions at the Library

Library U held its 2019 fall humanities series in October at Bainbridge Public Library. The three engag-ing conversations on important issues facing Americans today were led by experts from the Human-ities Washington Speakers Bureau. It was free to the public and refreshments were provided.
