Bailey put brake safety firstWith tractors becoming even more powerful andfaster on the roads and the current tractor/ trailergross weight limit of 24t due to increase to nearer 30in years to come, there has been much talk of how toincrease the braking performance of trailers. The factremains that prevention is better than cure and that is whyover the past 5 years Bailey have led the market in puttingbrake safety first.

All Bailey grain and root trailers over 12t are fitted with commercialaxles which provide the 45% braking efficiency proposed by the EUwhile any smaller models can be fitted with the same as an optionalextra.

“With faster tractors and more road haulage, demand for the highperformance axles has steadily increased to a point where it is viablefor us to fit them as standard on our top selling trailers” explainsMichael Bailey.

EU Proposals state that only trailers with the 50% braking efficiencyshould be allowed on the road but some farmers have been reluctantto spend around £1000 to upgrade from their agricultural axles whichprovide 25% efficiency.

Bailey are increasing being asked to match tractor performancewith air brakes. These also can be added to the commercial axles at alater date as a ʻbolt onʼ addition without compromising axleperformance.

Baileyʼs flagship TB trailer range is available incapacities up to 24 tons… Tag range to 16 tons…Root Specials to 20 …and ʻBeeteapersʼ up to 22 tons.These are now all fitted with chromed rams asstandard, plus heavy duty RHS chassis, tandemsprings and LED lights.

The ʻBeateaperʼ is fitted with flotation tyres forreduced ground compaction and mud guards forminimal mud transfer to the roads. Tipping to 60degrees, ʻBeeteaperʼ is fitted with a hydraulic rear dooron extended side arms so beet can be heaped toaround 3 metres, 9 feet high. Like most Bailey designsthe ʻBeeteaperʼ is multi-functional being equally usefulwith grain and other crops requiring tipping withinbuildings.

The Root Special SeriesThe Root Special features a longer and lower designto minimise damage to their valuable contents. Theyare equally at home in the grain harvest.

Silage kits quickly convert the standard monocoquemodel into an efficient silage trailer. These are offeredin a choice of designs: square back, flat back ormechanical. Large rear openings ensure fast andefficient discharge of the silage of forage crop.Commercial axles ensure safe transport on the roads.

Among Baileyʼs optional fittings, the roll over ʻEasysheetʼ offers crop protection from the damaging effectsof wind, rain and vermin. They are designed to permitfull door opening without unrolling the sheet.

The popular bale and pallet trailer has beenadapted to suit the needs of the potato grower withthe addition of hydraulic rams to secure the boxes, aroll over sheet and hydraulic working platforms bothsides for safe working on the field.

A family businessIt was 30 years ago when Tom Bailey and his step brotherDavid Hoyes produced their first trailers in the Lincolnshirevillage of Aunsby. Their steel framed building business wasfacing a downturn following the governmentʼs reduction ofbuilding grants. Tom had previously worked for a trailermanufacturer and when the opportunity came for him to sub-contract initially trailer chassis and later bodies, it was obviousthat both the skills and the knowledge needed to producecomplete trailers was available locally and their first Baileytrailer was a 10 ton tipper for a local farmer. Word spread andexpansion followed.

Bailey GreenSoon they needed a salesman and Graham Wright started his30 years as the companyʼs sales manager. 26 trailers weremanufactured in that first year, coincidentally the samenumber as Bailey are currently producing each week! Theearly grey finished trailers soon gave way to the Bailey greenwe know today, a colour selected on the simple expedient thatno one else was producing green trailers at the time! 99% ofBailey trailers still get finished in green although alternativecolours are available at a modest charge. The main exceptionis the yellow finish commonly applied to their contract tippersand dumpers to match JCB tractors.

Within 3 years Bailey switch their focus to concentratesolely on trailers which had by then eclipsed their buildingfabrication business.

Twenty or so years later the original site had been fullydeveloped but still could only produce around 12 trailers aweek and accommodate 40 staff. Continued expansiondemanded that the company moved on and a suitable sitewas identified at nearby Sleaford. And todayʼs purpose builtfactory with efficient work flows and computer controls wascompleted in early 2010.

“We were never concerned about the investmentrequired to make the move as we could see the demand forour trailers remaining very high” says Sales Director MichaelBailey.”We have an excellent dealer network and had beenlosing orders due to extended lead times. We currently haveplans for further expansion within the year so capacitykeeps pace with demand.”

The company currently employs 9 members of the Baileyfamily. Richard Bailey heads the design department andoversees production including a state of the art laser cutterinstalled to handle sheet steel and runs 24 hours a day, fiveand a half days a week. He is also responsible forscheduling production so that delivery dates are met.

“When we receive an order the delivery date agreed withthe customer will be the date the trailer is delivered”explains Richard. “The computerised system gives us up to12 months planning capability. This is increasingly importantbecause dealers are forward ordering more than before. Forexample if you ordered a trailer in October, the factory hascapacity. However, we may already fully booked for nextJune! So if you want a trailer for June/ July we would needto schedule for April /May. The new system is critical for ourfuture expansion.”
