Tuesday races and the spectacular Mexican Buffet continues through the end of August. Under the watchful eye of Director Rhonda Tolar and her fun-loving team looking after the inside festivities, and Sail Fleet Captain Bill McNamara and his Race Committee keeping the racing going, there is something for everyone on these Tuesdays. Camp Corinthian, the BCYC Junior Sailing Program is in full swing with a record number of junior sailors refining their sailing skills or learning the basics of seamanship. Thanks to Junior Sailing Director, Cameron MacClaren, and Head Coach, Matt Peter, along with the many coaches, for all their hard work and results.

Cruise Committee Chairs, Lauri and Rear Commodore Steve Moffett, are making final preparations for our Santa Barbara Yacht Club cruise this month. Included will be an adventure cruise element — an extended cruise to the Channel Islands. Special thanks to Director Larry Fortmuller, our adventure expedition leader, for his efforts and research – it will be fun to get our anchors dirty and explore this beautiful area. Hopefully this will become an annual event where different cruising venues will be selected, which Larry has aptly named “Adventure Cruising.”

Finally, I would like to recognize one of our members for her extraordinary efforts over the Memorial Day Weekend. Castaways Park hosted an event to honor our veterans and service men. If you had a chance to visit the park you saw the multitude of American flags flying, acknowledging the sacrifices of our service men and women. This amazing tribute was created by Marjorie Davis, longtime BCYC member, and the Exchange Club. Her late husband, Ted, was a WWII vet who received the Navy Cross and Medal of Honor. Marjorie, thank you so much for arranging this special tribute, which truly gives new meaning to why we celebrate Memorial Day.

I wrote this in Bermuda, where Lynn and I joined friends who live there, and enjoyed the America’s Cup qualifying races. These races determined which challenger will face Oracle Team USA in the America’s Cup, starting June 17. It will be Emirates Team New Zealand in a rematch of the 2013 race for the Auld Mug. While the winner of the America’s Cup will be known when you read this, I wanted to comment on this unbelievable venue.

The racing boats are amazing – 50-foot catamarans capable of speeds as much as four times the wind speed, up to 50 miles per hour. While I am sure you have seen these boats from television coverage, this beautiful setting with an amazing number of super yachts is spectacular. The spectator fleet ranges from tall ships, to the original J Boats, to yachts upwards of 350 feet, to the Maltese Falcon. This remarkable sailing vessel has 15 sails for a total sail area of 25,791 square feet! There were hundreds of boats in the area, all enjoying the racing and the myriad activities surrounding the America’s Cup races. Lynn and I enjoyed our time in Bermuda immensely.

As we begin the summer months, we switch to another gear; turning our time to the great outdoors and the sea. Our membership has the pleasure of enjoying an event at the club or the next cruise — each one great fun. For example, Taco

To all members, wear your name tag when attending an event or enjoying dinner at the club. There is a cabinet located near the club office, where you can keep your name tag in a secure place, so you have it every time you are at the club. If you need a new or additional name tag, please order through Josefine Giani in the club office. You should have a parking permit sticker displayed on your vehicles. Available from the club office, simply provide information and documentation about your vehicle to obtain a sticker. Remember to remove this sticker if you sell your vehicle.

Membership packets are available at the club office for you to provide to friends, neighbors and business colleagues. I am always available to give a tour or talk to potential members. Here’s to a great BCYC summer.

Dramatic, elegant, clever, exciting and sexy as hell; just some of the adjectives heard to describe the setting at BCYC for the Leukemia & Lymphoma dinner/auction/dance on June 10. Gail Cyprus and her team created a spectacular room, from the amazing table decorations to the stunning backdrop and window treatments (treatments created by Director Silvia and Cary Breeden). You knew you were in for a Bond…James Bond, kind of event and the more than 170 members and guests greatly enjoyed the evening, helping move BCYC closer to the goal of raising $200,000 this year for LLS research.

The team aboard Wild Thing participated in the BCYC Predicted Log Invitational in June with seven other boats from Hollywood and Huntington Harbour Yacht Clubs. With skipper Russell Grant ably assisted by Scott McKinlay, Lynn Noah, Vice Commodore Jerry Shandera and Commodore Chuck Wert, we did pretty good for a bunch of first-timers. Next year will be the year we reclaim the Tara trophy with the top finish!

During the summer, the Junior Events Committee will be busy with activities for Camp Corinthian, the summer junior sailing program, as well as our family-friendly events. In July, there will be a Burger Bash every Friday evening on the pool patio. This great buffet near the barbecue grills will have more choices and toppings for you to customize your masterpiece! Following the July 21 Burger Bash, there will be a Family Movie Night featuring Disney’s “Moana.” Wear your Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts and pull up a beach chair for this fun, tropical adventure.

If you have some great ideas for family events at the club, now is the time to join the Junior Events Committee. Summer at BCYC is the best, especially when making memories with your friends and family. Full House for Camp Corinthian

Summer at BCYC is in full swing with the weekly Burger Bash beginning this month, and Taco Tuesdays continuing the evening race series. Camp Corinthian Summer Program is close to capacity for the first time in seven years — over 90 sailors enrolled! We have a very robust program this year with a stellar coaching staff and lots of talent throughout the junior ranks. It will be exciting to see how we stack up in competition with other yacht clubs when the Balboa Bay Fleet summer racing series gets underway early this month.

One big change this year is the close collaboration with our neighbors at Balboa Yacht Club on double-handed programming. BCYC Head Coach Matt Peter and BYC Head Coach Mike Pinckney are leading a group of about 20 sailors in the C420 class, with half of the kids hailing from each club. The CFJ class is operating under the same format, and both teams have a very rigorous schedule ahead of them. Regattas include the weekly Balboa Bay Fleet series, the Junior Olympic Festival in San Diego, CFJ Nationals at Coronado Yacht Club, and the Buzzard’s Bay Regatta at New Bedford Yacht Club in Massachusetts. We also have some all-female teams competing in the Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship for the Ida Lewis Trophy at Annapolis Yacht Club. We are thrilled to have our sailors stepping into the big arena by attending these national level events!

By the way, have you seen the new hose reel system we’ve installed in the boatyard? This upgrade is here to benefit all members using the boatyard, making the hoses easier to manage and hopefully keeping them in prime working condition!

Junior Board of DirectorsIn June, the BCYC Junior Board of Directors held two of our annual fundraisers: Family Bingo Night, June 2, and the Junior Leukemia Cup Regatta, June 4.

The Junior Bingo Night fund raising event featured a retro video game theme. Everyone had a great time playing bingo and participating in the raffle while raising money for the Junior Sailing Program. A big thank you to everyone who helped put on such a fun night, and to all who came and supported our junior sailors. Congratulations to the winners – we look forward to seeing you next year!

The Junior Leukemia Cup Regatta raises funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. We had 23 junior sailors racing, and raised $4,500! Thank you to all who participated in this very important fundraiser.

How Corinthian Is Your Yacht Club?

Almost a decade ago, a blog author posed the question above in a humorous and thought-provoking description of six hypothetical yacht clubs and graded them AAA+ through F. I think of that blog entry often, especially when planning Sail Fleet events, and have provided an abbreviated synopsis below to stimulate thought and discussion at BCYC.

AAA+: This club is a dazzling beacon to showcase the sport to the world, sponsoring all sorts of programs and events, on and off the water that are well designed, organized, and attended. Club leaders and members are eager to try new programs, and leaders follow up persistently to make sure that every member has a voice in the club and is heard – often.

A: Corinthian spirit is very much alive and well at this outstanding club, with a nice mix of old and new members and good support for youth sailing and community involvement. Staff members are cherished, enjoy their jobs and are proud to work at the club. Members have grown tolerably amphibious and regret being away from the water and club for very long.

B: Typical mainline, relatively healthy sailing organization where members are active racers or cruisers, and the club has active on-the-water racing and cruising programs. The club is relatively active and respected in its community and is a member in good standing in the sailing community. New members are generally made to feel welcome and some effort goes into recruiting. At least a few “old salts” are willing to show greenhorns the ropes. C: An ordinary, run-of-the-mill club, a place that has more of a social vibe, as people hang around to talk about past glories as much as they gather to do something on the water. Competency varies from event to event. There is a core of active sailors who get out racing and cruising, as well as some newer and younger members, and some kids around learning their way around boats.

D: We’re a yacht club, aren’t we? Remember when our club had better days? The members of this organization might talk about sailing or yachting, even if they don’t really do much about it. Yacht ownership isn’t terribly important within the organization, and there’s no requirement that leadership or anyone else have much knowledge of yacht racing, seamanship or other things nautical.

F: A harbor-view restaurant that charges dues, also known as the drinking (yacht) club from hell.

This organization doesn’t have much to do with yachting except for appropriating the name yacht club for commercial purposes. Members tell stories that sometimes involve a yacht’s throttle, spirit (liquor) locker or berth cushions (boudoir).

Taco Tuesdays are in full swing with more than 80 dinners sold each week! If you have never been to this event, the club opens at 4 p.m., and you can enjoy an amazing Mexican buffet, thanks to Chef Georges Rapicault and the culinary team, from 5-8:30 p.m., for only $14 per person. Items include taquitos, quesadillas, a variety of taco fillings, chimichangas, salads, churros for dessert and much more. We have multiple tables available for our members. All members and guests are welcome to join us for dinner and the exciting raffle afterwards. The Columbia Room menu is not available on Tuesdays. A new item for the kids, corn dogs, is now on the Columbia Room menu thanks to a suggestion from Chloe Curtin. Know that items on the various menus at the club have started as a suggestion made to the Food and Beverage Committee. A good example of this is the monthly Sandwich of the Month.

Sunday Night Suppers continue to be popular. Each week, Chef Georges creates two new dishes. These suppers are held in the fun and friendly ambiance of the specially decorated Lounge. An amazing value at $18++ per person, the four-course meal includes sourdough bread and butter, salad, soup, entrée and dessert. You

are encouraged to make a reservation through the club office for this dining event. The Columbia Room menu is also available on Sunday night.

The wine and spirits list has been enhanced based on a suggestion to the Food and Beverage Committee from Mike Curtin. Included in this listing are most of the spirits and liqueurs carried in the BCYC Columbia Room bar. Now you can simply request something from the list rather than hoping you spot that special whiskey on the back bar.

Finally Friday Gourmet Burgers (FFGB) are available only in the Columbia Room every Friday night through Sept. 1. This is a fun concept where you build you own burger. Meat choices are beef, bison or chicken and there is a large array of sides and condiments to add to your burger. Ask for an order ticket and make your choices – be creative and try a different combination every Friday!

Let’s Get Boating!

Isthmus Cruise was a great success and so much fun. A huge thank you to the Isthmus Yacht Club and their members for allowing us to enjoy their facility, a great spot to dine and party. Our “flock of flamingos” added to the festivities. If you didn’t join us, you missed a great cruise.

The Santa Barbara Cruise is finally here. July 14-16 are the dates for our “land-based” cruisers who wish to drive or take the train up the coast. You will need to make your own room reservations. July 16-21 are the dates for our “sea-based” cruisers heading off on the adventure portion of this cruise. Call Lauri Moffett if you would still like to attend. Land-based activities include a Friday night cocktail party, lunch and skippers’ meeting at Santa Barbara Yacht Club on Saturday, followed by a group dinner at the famous Harry’s Café and Steakhouse. All activities are within close proximity to SBYC and the harbor.

We recommend that if you haven’t had your boat equipment and safety gear checked, you should plan to do that prior to heading out for this cruise. Being prepared will make it a much happier trip! Call Director Larry Fortmuller with any questions regarding the Channel Islands portion of the cruise.

Camp Clambake is August 17-20 at the Del Rey Yacht Club facility in Catalina Harbor, opposite Two Harbors. Our awesome BCYC staff will be there to make sure we are properly fed and hydrated. This is a great family event with activities for all ages! Sign up starts July 15.

Ahoy! Summer is in full swing and Las Commodoras kicked off the fun with our annual Dog Show, May 20. Nineteen very cute pooches and their families joined in the fun. Many thanks to event chair Nancy Bryant and co-chair Catherine Miller for organizing the festivities, and congratulations to the winners.

More than 40 members were sad to see the Day at the Races at Santa Anita Park outing was cancelled due to not enough horses. This wonderful Las Commodoras tradition will return in 2018, even if we have to bring our own horses!

Please mark your calendars to join us for the High Tea Luncheon July 20 at 11:30 a.m. Kari Konapelsky and Secretary Ginny Lombardi are working together to plan this special luncheon.

Hopefully you have noticed the new lighted sign on the front of the club house. This is a gift from Las Commodoras – it certainly makes it easy to find BCYC after dark.

Did you know that the new lighted sign on the front of the building is a gift from Las Commodoras? Through the collaborative efforts of Connie O’Connor and the Las Commodoras team, this sign went from a good idea to reality in a relatively short amount of time. It replaced a dimly lit sign on the building that was somewhat hidden by plant growth. This is a great addition to BCYC. Movie/Pizza Night
