Year 5 News ~ Year 5 have thoroughly enjoyed their

last week with a lovely trip to Heatherton. Despite the

weather, the children still had a great time spending

time together and trying some new

activities. Behaviour throughout the

day was excellent and all pupils

were a credit to the school. Thank you to Mrs Rinaldi

who very kindly offered to help us on the trip. Best

wishes for a fun, safe and happy holiday and I look

forward to teaching you all again in year six!

Nursery News ~ This week the older Nursery

children performed a ‘Moving on, moving up’ concert

for their Mums and Dads. They sang some of their

favourite Nursery songs and talked about what

they would like to be when they grow up. We then

had a ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ party to celebrate.

Mrs Davies was very proud of them all and would

like to say a big thank you to all of the Nursery

parents and children.

Nursery and Reception News ~ On Monday we enjoyed our trip to Port Eynon beach. We

all had a wonderful time. There were many activities for us to enjoy with our parents and

carers. We made sandcastles, built towers, went rock pooling, flew kites, used sports

equipment and some dads built a boat with pebbles. Lots of us ate our packed lunch on the

beach and some of us had a treat and enjoyed yummy chips. All of the children were given

an ice-cream token and the ice-creams were kindly donated by the PTA. It was great to

use all our experiences and skills developed in school when playing at the beach.

Reception News ~ during our last week we have been reflecting

on our learning experiences over the past year. We have

thoroughly enjoyed many activities and we have learnt so much.

Our favourite activities and experiences have been seeing

Santa at Dan yr Ogof caves, playing in our class Santa’s

Grotto, visiting Baglan Park, going to buy fruit in the Spar,

making fruit kebabs, researching information about wild animals

in Patagonia, using the ‘My Story’ app, having ice-creams and

lollies when the ice-cream van came to school and our fantastic beach trip. We remember

having Miss Griffiths and Mrs Richards as our teachers and Miss Thomas and Miss

Willment have helped us to learn lots of new things. Mrs Challenger is very proud of us all

and would like to thank all parents for their support during the year.

Year 2 News ~ We have worked so hard this year, we have been busy learning lots of

maths, like explicit and implicit information, lots of maths stories using the commutative

law and practising our Perfect Problem Solving Steps so we always know what we should do

when we are doing maths problems. We did peer teaching, some of us were maths mentors

and we had to really know the maths and then explain and support the learning of others,

it was a bit scary at first but we enjoyed doing it, some children wanted to be maths

mentors so they were trained too and they were maths mentors as well.

We have all learned our sounds in Read Write Inc, we have done lots of writing using tool

kits and check lists. We love writing story maps putting in speech bubbles and describing

words, then we made our own stories from stories we have learned in class.

We enjoyed going to see Father Christmas, to the museum and to Heatherton, then we

had a lovely end of year party. We loved all the

concerts, especially the Jungle Book. It was so much

fun learning the songs and dances. We will miss Mrs

Turner.

Next year we will be in the Juniors but we are so

ready, we are having the new teacher Mrs Roosmalin. It

is all very exciting. Have a very happy holiday everyone.

Year 4 News ~ We have had a very busy year in Year 4

this year and for our last learning log of the year we had

to think of memorable occasions of our time in year 4. We

shared our memories with the class this week, it was so

much fun and we remembered how hard we have worked

this year.

Some of us remembered the story of ‘Hamlin’ learning it Pie

Corbett style and doing story maps. Lots of us talked about

how good we had got at maths especially learning grid

multiplication and division with remainders. We all agreed we had got better at telling the

time and learnt lots about fractions. Some children had good memories of our Science class

assembly on solids, liquids and gases, where for some they had their first speaking parts and

how they had learnt so much from songs, raps and practical experiments.

We also reminisced about our Victorian and Patagonia themed work in History, the concerts,

singing in the choir, the casa de te and special visitors including the Swansea city players and

the First Minister Carwyn Jones. A few of us remembered the trips to Margam Park and our

mini topic of mountains, the pantomime, the cinema, Aberavon beach and Heatherton Activity

Park. Others recalled our PE experiences with the gymnastics, tag rugby festival and cricket

being a big hit. We all thoroughly enjoyed our Jungle Book production and working with Mrs

Turner in all the concerts this past year. We wish her a great and happy retirement.

Mrs Giles then showed us all the photos she had taken of us this year in a slide show and we

remembered, laughed and couldn’t believe how much we had all changed in a year.

Well done Year 4 on all of your hard work this year – enjoy your well-earned summer holiday,

Mrs Richards’ News ~ This week, some boys from

Year six have been busy weeding and tidying up the

junior class allotments. The hot weather and

frequent rainfall have made the flowers grow but

have also seen a massive increase in the weeds.

Without the constant work from these boys, the

allotments would go to rack and ruin. We are very

lucky to have such dedicated gardeners in Year six –

children who are knowledgeable and who are

prepared to give up their playtimes to ensure our gardens look fantastic. I appreciate all the

work you have done not just this year but over all the time you have been in the Juniors. You

have developed wonderful skills that you can take on to your next school and they will be

lucky to have you.

Year 6 News ~ The last week for Year 6 has been as busy as

usual. They really enjoyed the visit by artist Viv Rhule, who

helped the class to make willow sculptures based on sea life.

These will be displayed as part of the festival on Aberavon Beach

on August 5th and 6th. The children have also shared their

thoughts and memories about Baglan Primary being a special

place, during their Leavers’ Assembly. We hope children, staff

and families enjoyed it! As Year 6 all prepare to move to their

new schools in September, we wish them all the very best for the

Year 1 News ~ Well, this is our last Newsletter

post of the Year! The last few weeks of the

year have been filled with lots of exciting things

including Jungle Book, our trip to Heatherton

and our class party. I am so proud of the

children who have worked so hard to learn their

songs, dance and stage cues for the show, and I'm sure you'll agree

that they all performed admirably!

We were very fortunate to have fantastic weather for our trip to Heatherton. The children

(and parents...and staff) thoroughly enjoyed! The bumper boats, barrel train and the water

zorbs definitely looked to be a firm favourites!

We had a fab time in our class party and ate lots of delicious

food. I don't know how many more times Mr Atkins can listen to

'Let It Go' from 'Frozen' I'd like to take this opportunity to

wish Mrs Turner all the best in her well-deserved retirement.

She has served the school impeccably for nearly 30 years and I

think you'll agree she will be sorely missed. Have a great

summer everyone.

Year 3 News ~ This week in year 3 we have been very busy. Yesterday we watched the

leaving assembly for year 6, it was very emotional…we will miss you

year six! On Wednesday we had a school trip to Heatherton in

Tenby. We did pistol shooting, go karts, bumper boats and lots

more. Today we had a party to celebrate our achievements this

year...YAY! We were allowed to bring in games and wear non-

school uniform. We had a great party and we are looking forward

to year 4! Mrs Turner will be retiring this year. We wish her the

Dear All,

Well, it has finally arrived – the time for me to retire, after thirty eight years as a

teacher. It really does seem like yesterday when I walked across the Baglan Primary

School Infant playground for the first time, so that I could pick up the application form.

No online forms in those days! Twenty eight years later, it is time to say goodbye to you

all; children, staff and parents. It has been a joy and a privilege to teach children, from

the Nursery to Year 6. I will treasure my memories of all the boys and girls I have been

lucky enough to have taught. The people I have worked with are more than dedicated

colleagues; they are my friends and I am going to miss every single one of them. I cannot

thank them enough for their sense of fun and kindness. Without their great support,

understanding and flexibility, we, as a school, would never have been able to produce

successful concerts and shows, such as our production of Jungle Book last week. I would

also like to thank all parents for their support and partnership throughout the years, some

of whom I taught when they were pupils here. It has been greatly appreciated. Thank

you, too, to the PTA who do such marvellous work in our school. One of the first jobs my

husband has planned for me is emptying the attic, so I shall be glad to pass on my

‘hoardings’ for the next fete!

To the children in the choir ‘Well Done!’ You have given me such pleasure and sense of

pride every time you performed – even if I’ve had to chase you to come to lunchtime choir

practice! I hope you continue to sing in your new schools. A huge ‘Thank You’ to parents

of children who have ever been in the choir, for without you, we never would have

performed in so many concerts, inside and outside school. Finally, many thanks indeed to

Mrs. Morgan, for all her help and encouragement to me personally over the past three

years and for her enthusiasm towards music and drama for all of our pupils.

This year our target for attendance was set at 93.5% or above for the year; thank you

for your support in helping us meet our target, our current attendance is 93.75%. Next

year we will be increasing our attendance target and are hoping to exceed 94%.

Dinner money ~ Please be advised that as of September 1st 2014, dinner

money will increase to £2.10 per day, £10.50 per week.
