BAFTA LOS ANGELES BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION Two Members will be elected to the Board via a vote of the membership to serve a three-year term commencing January 2019. The BAFTA Los Angeles Bylaws require that a minimum of one third of our Full Voting Members participate in the voting for this election. What do you pledge to deliver for BAFTA Los Angeles in 2018 if elected as a Board Member? (Limit 50 words) I pledge to deliver new members from Diverse backgrounds and spread the BAFTA message internationally.

Board Members have a give-or-get fundraising responsibility. What fundraising experience do you have that would benefit BAFTA Los Angeles if elected as a Board Member? (Limit 50 words) I have raised financing for films for 12 years as an agent, so I know how to procure money from people.

What do you believe are BAFTA Los Angeles’ primary and secondary goals as an Academy? (Limited 50 words)

• To increase membership amongst younger more diverse members • To highlight all of the amazing new talent coming out of the UK Film + TV.

Please provide a statement of up to 200 words in support of your application to the BAFTA Los Angeles Board describing how your professional experience and contributions as a Director would help the Academy reach these goals (please limit to 200 words): I have been a BAFTA Member for 10+ years. I think it’s a great organization but I think it could do more to support and highlight all of the new talent coming from the UK. BAFTA should be a celebration of all of that talent as well as a active supporter of initiatives to help new talent break into the US system. I have spent the past decade supporting and celebrating many many young writers + directors from the UK, and Champions them around the world.

Professional background, expertise and/or credits (please limit to 200 words): I began my career in Ireland working with emerging filmmakers at the Irish Film Centre. This was followed by a stint at Screen Training Ireland where I initiated programs in key skill areas across the industry. I moved to the UK in 2001 as Managing Director of Moonstone International, the European satellite of the Sundance Institute Labs where I ran one Directors Lab and two Screenwriters Labs per year. After 5 years I joined Creative Skillset, the UK’s publicly funded organisation for film and tv training. As their first Screen Academy Manager I oversaw the development of industry focussed training at the UK’s top 5 film schools. In 2008 I left London to join the UK Film Council’s Los Angeles office as Senior Executive, Industry Relations. When the UK Film Council closed in 2011, I was engaged by the British Film Commission US as SVP, US Partnerships. In May 2016 I was recruited by Pinewood Studios to run their LA office. My role encompasses business development, marketing, industry relations and corporate affairs.

Please provide a statement of up to 200 words in support of your application to the BAFTA Los Angeles Board describing how your professional experience and contributions as a Director would help the Academy (please limit to 200 words): The purpose of an Academy is to promote and maintain standards of excellence. Excellence should also be reflected in our diversity. I want to help BAFTA LA to achieve this by setting gender and diversity goals. A diverse membership will make a better and stronger organization. I would like to help broaden the range of events to include ones that are more industry focused. I was nominated onto the Board last year and from April I have Chaired the Film Committee. We are beginning to put together a busy schedule of film focused panels to take place year-round. It is important to me that all members - whether they be newcomers or veterans - are served. I’d like to propose a setting where we can pay tribute to our senior members and their distinguished careers. I would also like to set up an intimate Salon series where they can share their stories and unique insights with our Newcomers and Alumni.

After graduating from UCLA in 1975, he joined Hanna-Barbera as a writer and story editor. 1982, he co-created Inspector Gadget for DIC Audiovisual, and has produced over 5,000 episodes of award-winning children’s programs, most of which are household names. Today under Genius Brands International, Heyward produces and licenses brands ranging from Stan Lee Comics, to Baby Genius, Warren Buffett's Secret Millionaires Club, Thomas Edison's Secret Lab. He co-authored a book with Warren Buffett promoting financial literacy for kids, and he is the author of Go Go Gadget – The Creation of Inspector Gadget. Genius Brands is currently producing RAINBOW RANGERS for Nickelodeon and Mattel Toys, and LLAMA LLAMA for Netflix, starring Jennifer Garner, now in its second season. Heyward has earned multiple industry awards and recognitions, including two Emmys, nine Emmy nominations, two Humanitas Awards, two Cable Ace Awards, five Golden Reel Awards, three Environmental Media Awards, and a National Education Association Award. He was inducted into the KidScreen Hall of Fame, and won the Studio of the Year at Italy’s Cartoons on the Bay International Festival of Television Animation in 2006 (co-awarded to Roy Disney).

I know that community including broadcasters, advertisers, production community, talent agents, and rightsholders. I think it is increasingly important to have a robust representation with this universe and will bring my experience and relationships to raise BAFTA’s profile in this space.

Board Members have a give-or-get fundraising responsibility. What fundraising experience do you have that would benefit BAFTA Los Angeles if elected as a Board Member? (Limit 50 words) I’m on the board of UCLA Health Systems Board, Cedars Sinai Medical Center, and Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. These require an active commitment to fundraising, which I have done for them. I’m familiar with the high worth community and comfortable speaking to them to advance the BAFTA agenda.

What do you believe are BAFTA Los Angeles’ primary and secondary goals as an Academy? (Limited 50 words) To promote excellence in film and television, while extending the mission of the Academy to include those members who live and work in the Hollywood community.

Please provide a statement of up to 200 words in support of your application to the BAFTA Los Angeles Board describing how your professional experience and contributions as a Director would help the Academy reach these goals (please limit to 200 words): Having lived and worked in London on and off throughout my adult life, I have always felt connected to the British film and television industry, notwithstanding the fact that my residence is in Los Angeles. I have produced over 5000 1/2 hour episodes of animated television, for the US. and the global marketplace. I have worked in all areas of the business including production, broadcast, and advertising. I believe that brings a broad perspective from which to serve the membership of BAFTA Los the to serve the membership up after Los Angeles. I sit on the boards of both Cedar Sinai, and UCLA medical centers and fully understand and embrace the responsibilities of board membership. I look forward to contributing and being a productive member of BAFTA LA's board.

What do you pledge to deliver for BAFTA Los Angeles in 2018 if elected as a Board Member? (Limit 50 words) I’m an experienced senior executive, board member and fundraiser. I have deep experience in strategy-setting, governance and policy. I’ve held leadership roles in the for-profit and non-profit sectors. I believe I could serve as an effective board member, fundraiser and liaison to Silicon Valley.

Board Members have a give-or-get fundraising responsibility. What fundraising experience do you have that would benefit BAFTA Los Angeles if elected as a Board Member? (Limit 50 words) I raised more than $50 million as the Computer History Museum CEO and built the development staff. I negotiated $100 million in joint venture relationships with Pearson plc in London. I would have no hesitation attempting to develop relationships and raise money for a great institution like BAFTA.

What do you believe are BAFTA Los Angeles’ primary and secondary goals as an Academy? (Limited 50 words) First, to foster and recognize professional excellence in filmmaking, television and digital media. Second, to make a meaningful contribution to the recruitment, mentoring and advancement of young creators. Third, to support the ongoing preservation of the film and TV industry’s heritage—a heritage which is both important and easily lost.

Please provide a statement of up to 200 words in support of your application to the BAFTA Los Angeles Board describing how your professional experience and contributions as a Director would help the Academy reach these goals (please limit to 200 words): The creative relationship between film, television and technology has never been tighter, and it’s only going to get more pronounced in the future. I’ve been an active participant in this evolution beginning with my work on PBS.org and PBSKids.org in the mid-90s, continuing with Pearson plc in London, where my team won a BAFTA in 2002, and in my transformation, over the last decade, of the Computer History Museum into a media-savvy institution producing branded video content around the world. My career thus spans Silicon Valley, Hollywood and London, and I believe I could support BAFTA’s important work in bridging these professional worlds. I have deep connections in the television field around the world and, particularly, here in Northern California with Apple, Netflix, Google / YouTube, Facebook and the Pixar division of Disney. Finally, I expanded and accelerated the oral history program of the Computer History Museum significantly and would like to bring that expertise to bear on the heritage element of the BAFTA mission in both LA and London.

Raising money for 5 charities both through private individuals and government bodies as well as institutional. Raised money for film funds in the region of $250m equity, $250m. Genesis Media Capital, my company raises equity and debt for film.

What do you believe are BAFTA Los Angeles’ primary and secondary goals as an Academy? (Limited 50 words) To foster, develop and reward the incredible talent we have. Be a home for unique talents that come to the USA. To provide educational, professional access to the industry for our members so that they can hear from the talent, see their work early, learning from the educational events

Please provide a statement of up to 200 words in support of your application to the BAFTA Los Angeles Board describing how your professional experience and contributions as a Director would help the Academy reach these goals (please limit to 200 words): Through my extensive and far reaching experience in both film and fundraising, along with my many close relationships in the industry, I feel I can bring a multi-faceted approach as a Director. Fundraising to make events more accessible for more members, supporting access to talent. Due to access and fundraising this will enable the development of many new ideas and places to go for the Academy. Caring for Courage called me their “secret weapon” due to my ability to persuade people to donate when the Colonels or Generals could not. I will help support our ability to reward the talent we have through continuing to be able to hold our prestigious events. I have professionally raised funds, I have made feature films and I have been in feature films and Television. I therefore have experience in front of the camera, behind the camera, in charity and in fundraising. Bringing in new young talent, helping to focus and point them in the right direction. I have many far reaching and long standing relationships within the industry. I have been a BAFTA/LA member for many years so I think I have an understanding of the membership and what it wants.

I represent music talent for Film at Treeline Artists Agency. Beach Dancer Films supports independent producers: industry film showcases, production/editing. Produces/produced up to 6 film festivals a year diverse as Culver City, LA Punk Film Festival, Playa Vista, Silicon Beach, LA Stand Up Comedy & Film Festival. Acts as liason collaborating between tech & film Companies in Venice. Over 20 yrs working in LA & Britain, an award wining independent director/producer dedicated to the craft. Board Members have a give-or-get fundraising responsibility. What fundraising experience do you have that would benefit BAFTA Los Angeles if elected as a Board Member? (Limit 50 words) I produced up to 5 Film Festivals & awards shows a year with ease. Procure corporate sponsors. Board of directors for Venice Media District & Community Council fundraising activities. Produced regional LA film festivals for over 5 yrs: Culver City, Silicon Beach, Playa Vista Festivals, BAFTA members have won awards.

What do you believe are BAFTA Los Angeles’ primary and secondary goals as an Academy? (Limited 50 words) A vibrant talented membership while creating stronger ties in BAFTA UK & LA that will be highly beneficial for all the members. My mission is to be a diplomatic bridge for the membership and the board, better ways to communicate & finding solutions for a strong unified membership. I will be loyal to the board and the members we represent creating opportunities & initiatives with clear direction. Marketing & PR to elevate BAFTA brand internationally and to create programs that celebrate mile markers of success for fellow BAFTA members. Garner sponsors for BAFTA events & my experience of Awards shows & events. I am a visionary & accomplishments can readily be achieved with a solution-tasked creative mind-set and team. Independent film festival collaborations/network with my connections in the film festival world. Helping with non-profit sector of BAFTA & charter or policies that directly affects the members. I will work to diligently broaden the diversity of our membership. In addition. To create networks with Hollywood, Burbank & Venice “Media Districts” to collaborate with companies in Film, Tech and maintain a sustainable traditional studio system I have immensely enjoyed collaborating with fellow members at BAFTA with LEAP after school program, film archives, the digital film committee as well as volunteer to mentor at Washington Prep & Student Film Awards.
