Baer is a deco inspired display typeface that incorporates two

notable typefaces. Its thin strokes combined with simple geomet-

ric shapes makes it enhanced for optimum legibility. Specific

rules were set in place to unif y forms in order to create a stylized

and cohesive typeface. The most essential and noticeable

feature is an enlarged x-height. Although it is unified throughout,

there are still identifiable characteristics that distinguish its retro

qualities and contemporary quirks. These aspects contribute to

the purpose of Baer as a display face. Combined with other body

typefaces, Baer is an important ass et to any designer.

The following section holds information containing the initial,

hand drawn, sketches of Baer. This section will present the initial

phases of the designs as well as show growth and progression.

The process is extremely important to the design. The designs

will evolve and change throughout the entirety .

These are the initial sketches from which Baer was

developed. Letters were drawn on gride d paper.

From the baseline to the capline the width was

drawn 1.5 inches. Compared to the us ual x-height,

which is normally 50-66% of the capital height,

Baers x-height was originally 3/4 inch wide. This is

about 80% of the capital height. All of the strokes

are thin which was part of the original concept.

These were the first sketches of the typ eface.

continuing process of the development of Baer.

The first round of sketches allow the typographer to

see how sketches appear, digitally. The image

below shows letter tracing using guides and grids.

The images on the right are revisions of the first

outlines. Changes were made acc ording to the

feedback from the previous sketches.

Baer is a combination of a couple typefaces. The deco inspiration

came from Bauhaus. The simple geometric forms contain smooth

curves, and specific features that give Bauhaus a distinctive look.

The contemporary inspiration that also influenced the us age of

thin strokes came from Neutra Di splay Light. This letters have tall

x-heights and low crossbars. Certain aspects of these typefaces

were melded together to create the hybrid Baer.
