About Goddess Durga
Durga, in Sanskrit means "She who is incomprehensible or difficult to reach." GoddessDurga is a form of Sakti worshiped for her gracious as well as terrifying aspect. Mother ofthe Universe, she represents the infinite power of the universe and is a symbol of a femaledynamism. The manifestation of Goddess Durga is said to emerge from Her formlessessence and the two are inseparable.
She is also called by many other names, such as Parvati, Ambika, and Kali. In the form ofParvati, She is known as the divine spouse of Lord Shiva and is the mother of Her two sons,Ganesha and Karttikeya, and daughter Jyoti. Destroyer of demons, she is worshiped duringan annual festival called Durga puja, especially popular among Bengalis.
Her AppearanceThere are endless aspects of Durga described in the Puranas and Agamas and theiconography is consequently very varied. She is usually pictured as having ten arms holdingSword, Conch, Discus, Rosary, Bell, Winecup, Shielf, Bow, Arrow, and Spear. She is mostoften shown riding a lion from which comes Her august name, Simhavahini, "She who standsastride the king of beasts". She is gorgeously dressed in royal red cloth and has severalornaments decorating Her personage. Her hair is dressed up in a crown (karandamukuta)which then flows out in long luxuriant tresses that are darkly luminous and soothing to theeye. The various tools reflects the eminent supremacy that helps in controling the universeand obey Her will.
Wielding EnergyGoddess Durga exists eternally, always abiding in her own sweet nature and inhabits thehearts and minds of her ecstatic devotees. As Shakti power, she shapes, nurtures, anddissolves names and forms, while as subtle spiritual energy called Kundalini, She lights thelotuses fo the seven centres of awareness in the sacred human body. Goddess Durga killedthe powerful demon Mahish and all his great commanders. When demonic forces createimbalance all god unite becoming one divine force called Shakti or Durga.

THE HOLY BOOKS OF HINDUSContributor – Sudeb Das
Sadhu Sangha
In Scriptures, there are many references of Sadhu Sangha, which is popularly knownas Sat Sangha. We find many such references in Kathamrita given by Bhagaban SriSri Ramakrishna for better understanding and practice of religion. The Sadhus orSaints with superior knowledge of religion, could explain religion better with storiesand examples from life. The people who seeks deeper knowledge in religion usuallytakes shelter of Saints or Holy man. So, in early days, Sadhu Sangha became theprimary source of learning religion. But , to-day many sources are available to enrichreligion knowledge. The different examples of Sadhu Sangha, or Sat Sangha are:-
1. Books- Many books in the form of Scriptures or Holy Books areavailable for reading. The books with diagrams, pictures are alsoavailable for better understanding and clarity and became primarysource of Sat Sangha.
2. Organized Classes, Meetings, Seminars, Discussions on religious subjects all arevery important means of Sat Sangha.
3. The next important means of Sat Sangha are pre-recorded Tapes or Discs on HolySubjects or Topics.
4. The Pre-recorded or Live Music such as Kirtan, Bhajan or many other types ofspiritual songs are also treated as important mode of Sat Sangha .
5. Esthetic Movies & Dramas narrating the stories of scriptures and lives of HolyMen or Women, also became a means Sat Sangha.
Therefore, all these studies such as Reading Sat Grantha (books); Attending theClasses, Lectures of Sadhus, Saints, Religious Scholars; Watching Good ReligiousMovies or Dramas; Listening or Participating in Religious Songs like Kirtan Bhajanetc. etc. can be assumed as Sat Sangha activities as these will help us to enrich ourreligious knowledge to lead better peaceful life.
The Blind Children and the Elephant
Once in a town there was a school for blind children. The teacher was telling thechildren a story about an elephant. One child asked the teacher,” what an elephant is”.The teacher could not describe what it was to the children. So he took them to anelephant to touch and understand what it is. All of the children were very excited. Theteacher took them to the manager of a circus nearby. He asked the manager and surelyhe said yes.

They came to an elephant named Radha. All of them surrounded the animal. One boymoved his hand over the large ear of the elephant. Then he thought to himself “Theelephant is like a fan.” Another boy held the leg of the elephant with both hands andthought “The elephant is a big pillar.” A third one touched his trunk and thought “Theelephant is a thick club.” The last one poked his stomach and thought “This animal isa huge jar.” They came back to the school and started discussing what an elephantis. The first student said an elephant is like a fan. The second student said a elephantis like a big pillar. And the third student said the elephant is a thick club. The fourthstudent said an elephant is a huge jar. They all are wrong and also they are correctbecause they could only touch a part of the elephant, not the whole elephant. So youcan not understand correctly from knowing the partial truth.

The Story of Surdas
Part – 1
Once upon a time, there was a man named Surdas. He had a great devotion to LordKrishna, but he was born blind. One day, he went on a holy trip. After a couple minuteshe fell into a well. He called to the Lord to save him, and eventually, after a week hewas pulled out of the well thanks to God’s grace. When he was on land, he heard LordKrishna and Radha talking. Surdas told them that he was blind, for he was begging tosee Krishna. Radha slowly went near Surdas. Krishna warned her that Surdas willcatchhold of her feet. Radha asked Surdas if he would do so, and he said, “ How can I, if Iam blind?” Krishna warned Radha again. She went behind Surdas and touched him.Surdas turned and managed to catch hold of her feet. Radha escaped, but Surdas hadher anklets.
Part – 2
Radha asked for Surdas to return her anklets. Surdas said, “ How do I know if theseare yours? I am blind.” Radha said, “They are mine. Please, return them to me.” “ If Ican see you, then I will know that they are yours.” Suddenly, Surdas could see! TheLord said that he can ask for any other boons he wants. Surdas said, “By seeing bothof your true forms, I don’t want to see any other things in the world. So, please, makeme blind again.” Radha shed tears of his devotion to them, and so, Surdas becameblind again.

Word of Malice*by Aratrik Guha
As we learn and as we grow,Our seniors teach us many a thing,Always setting precedents,And almost always hindering,I speak not of the elderly I speak of teens,In the heart of hatred lies spreading a scourge,A simple word of different meaning used to define our very friends,Used as a joke but interpreted differently,“Retard” we call our friends,For what reason this became a precedent is insane,Capricious and unintelligible are the influencers,But blissful are those,Those who are mentally challenged,They are unique in everyway,Their mental state we never leave astray,Facilitating their lives incessantly,Yet we still use the word that sets them a blaze,Never will I forgive those who use it,Some are hypocrites and some are ignorant,Though I trust that humanity will amend,For it is their duty as fellow human friends.

Obstacles
by Hirakumar Mukhopadhyay
It was just too difficult, there were too many obstacles
It seemed like survival wasn’t possible
But I kept my head up; everyone doesn’t die at a hospital
If a door closing,
a new one always opens
a new thing should be made when something is broken
I always heard no matter how far it is, still pursue
No attempt made, everything is bound to go askew
It might be crazy, it might be nuts like cashews
But being wrong at this point is like saying the sky isn’t blue
The situation may seem like different hues,
But it just depends on your view
So always persevere
The end may be near
It took me forever, but I’m finally here
My mission was to get past where I started, and that was clear
If you heading in the wrong direction, just turn and steer
If you’re afraid just remember you shouldn’t have fears
If you have that, all critics will simply cheer
What you strived for what will appear
It might take a day, or a year
Who knows the time?
But it’s all fine if you cross the finish line
They asked it took you so much longer, why didn’t you give up?
I did it for the honor and for me that was enough

What the epic says – “AkalBodhan”
The worship of Devi Durga in the month of Ashwin is called 'Akalbodhan'-an uncustomary time for commencement of the worship. It is so called sincethe period of this worship differs from the conventional period (during thespring - 'Basanta'). Ramayana says that when Rama was engaged in thefierce battle with Ravana, he wanted to secure the blessings of victoryfrom Devi Durga. He held the puja to evoke the goddess during autumn tohis dire plight, thereby worshiping Durga untimely (in Akal). Hence this pujais called Akalbodhon.
It was customary to worship Durga with 100 neel kamals (blue lotuses).Rama could gather only 99 of them; he offered one of his eyes as asubstitute of the 100th lotus. Pleased with his devotion Durga blessed him.The battle started on Shaptami and Ravana was killed at the Shandhikshan(in between) Ashtami and Navami; he was cremated on Dashami. Thereforethe four days of the puja that we celebrate ends in the triumph of thegood over evil.
With best Durga Puja wishesfrom

Indian cuisine is among the most variedand enjoyable of all ethnic foods becauseof terrain, climate and the infusion ofpeople of many different religions intoIndian culture over thousands of years...The taste that people savor in an Indiandish may range from the delicate to thehearty, the piquant to the fiery. Americansoften think of most Indian cookery asbeing of the latter category. However, it isthe inclusion of one ingredient, chilies, which makes food "hot". By toning downthe use of chilies, as well as some of thericher ingredients, Palace of Asia offersrecipes that are gentler, but retain theflavor, aroma and texture for which Indiancuisine is rightfully famous...Palace of Asia is pleased to present awide selection of Indian haute cuisinemade from the finest and freshestingredients. Our menu offers a welcomechange from the ordinary that is not onlypleasing to the palate, but a healthfulalternative as well, owing largely to theuse of a variety of vegetables and leanermeats.
