History of Badminton

In 1873, the Duke of Beaufort held a lawn party at his country house in the village of Badminton,

Gloucestershire. A game of Poona was played on that day and became popular among British

society’s elite. The new party sport became known as “the Badminton game”. In 1877, the Bath

Badminton Club was formed and developed the first official set of rules.

The Badminton Association was formed at a meeting in Southsea on 13th

September 1893. It was the

first National Association in the world and framed the rules for the Association and for the game.

The popularity of the sport increased rapidly with 300 clubs being introduced by the 1920’s. Rising to

9,000 shortly after World War Π.

The International Badminton Federation (IBF) was formed in 1934 with nine founding members:

England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Denmark, Holland, Canada, New Zealand and France and as a

consequence the Badminton Association became the Badminton Association of England.

From nine founding members, the IBF, now called the Badminton World Federation (BWF), has over

160 member countries. The future of Badminton looks bright.

Badminton was officially granted Olympic status in the 1992 Barcelona Games. Indonesia was the

dominant force in that first Olympic tournament, winning two golds, a silver and a bronze; the

country’s first Olympic medals in its history. More than 1.1 billion people watched the 1992 Olympic

Badminton competition on television.

Eight years later, and more than a century after introducing Badminton to the world, Britain claimed

their first medal in the Olympics when Simon Archer and Jo Goode achieved Mixed Doubles Bronze in

Sydney.

Only three countries have won the Thomas Cup since its inception in 1948: Malaysia, Indonesia and

China.

Only four countries have won the Uber Cup since its inception in 1956: USA, Japan, China and

Indonesia.

The badminton player with the longest name is thought to be Channarongratanasaengsuang, who won

16 caps for Thailand in the 1960s.

Subject to confirmation, China’s Fu Haifeng holds the world record for the fastest smash, recording a

206 mph (332 kph) hit during the Sudirman Cup in Beijing. This breaks the previous record of 162

mph (206 kph), which was held by England’s Simon Archer.

The first recorded tournament was staged by Guilford BC in 1898. It was so successful that

BADMINTON England (then called the Badminton Association ) followed suit and the following year

a one-day event was held at the London Scottish Rifles drill hall in London. This was the birth of the

world’s greatest, and most famous, badminton tournament, the All England Open Championships

which has been sponsored by Yonex since 1983.

Badminton players run over a mile in just one match.

The record number of All England titles won by one plyer is 21 and is held by Sir George Thomas.

It is said that the best shuttles are made from the feathers of the left wing of a goose.

Inter County Championships Previous Winners:

Notes

In 1996 Divisions 1 and 2 became the National Championships Premier A and Premier B open only to

first teams. The ten teams in each Division came together at central venues on three weekends and each

team played each other team once, the competition being decided by the total number of matches won.

The remaining Divisions were redesignated Regional Championships Divisions 1 to 5 and their structure

remained unaltered but a new points system was introduced.

In 2000-2001 Premier B was opened to second teams.

In 2004-2005 Promotion between Premier Division B and Division 1 of the regional championships was

changed to four up (eligible teams topping sections A-D) and four down.

Since 2006-2007 the Championships have been played using the new Laws of Badminton, rally points

scoring.

In 2007-2008 Promotion between Premier Division B and Division 1 of the Regional Championships

returned to two up (eligible teams topping sections A-D) and two down using playoffs.
