FROM THE DESK OF OUR COLLEGE PRINCIPAL

A successful start for our College Year I am pleased to say that we have had a very calm and organised start to the 2016 College Year. Your children have se led into their campus school in a pleasing manner. The students in both Prep and Year 7 along with students new to Derrimut Heath and Tarneit P-9 seem very happy to be a student at our College. At Baden Powell College we have a Student Code of Conduct along with a Staff Code of Conduct and a Community Code of Conduct and these documents explain how we will all communicate and treat each other. We have begun a very important Home / School Partnership now that your child has entered our College community and I trust that it will always be amicable, so that your child achieves to their learning poten al at all mes. As a result of an extensive College Review and a subsequent new Strategic Plan we have restructured our College into Purposeful Learning Communi es with an Assistant Principal as a leader in each community. Linda Danese is leading the Year 7-9 Community, Jason Vandy is leading the 3-6 Community at the Tarneit Campus, Sue Falla is leading the Prep-2 Community at Tarneit, Genni Douglas is leading the 3-6 Community at Derrimut Heath and Lesley Besanko is leading the Prep -2 Community at Derrimut Heath. Along with your child’s teacher, these people will be the best points of contact for you should you have any ques ons or concerns about your child.

College Carnival The College Carnival is happening on Saturday the 5th of March from 10 am to 3pm and we hope to see you there. This is a major fundraising ac vity and three years ago we raised over $30000. For the next few weeks we have a range of opportuni es for you to support the Carnival and next week we are asking families to donate a bo le of something interes ng. So far we have asked for Novelty Items so any small toys would be appreciated as they can be used for prizes at quite a few stalls. Every me you help you are helping us to provide much needed resources for your child. So drink, sauce, shampoo and wine come to mind! I also want to ask parents who have business connec ons to consider dona ng items for the auc on. Every effort helps so please read the Carnival Newsle er that we send home and enjoy the excitement of the Carnival.

College Elec ons Baden Powell College is governed by a College Council that has representa on from parents and staff.

The College Council is charged with the responsibility of deciding on policies related to the College and manages the financial decisions. The Council meets at least 8 mes a year and is supported by Sub Commi ees, namely Finance and Educa on. Each College Councillor is expected to be a member of at least one subcommi ee. Each year there is an opportunity for people to nominate for membership of the College Council. The elec on process for the College Council for 2016 will commence on Monday the 22nd of February and nomina on forms will be available from the office at either Tarneit or Derrimut Heath from that date for one week. Should you have any ques ons about the role of a College Councillor please call me on either 97488688 or 87340900.

Privacy Policy The College Council has approved a policy that explains our posi on on ma ers related to privacy issues. A copy of this policy is available to you upon request to the office at either Derrimut Heath or Tarneit P-9. We understand that some families have concerns related to the taking of photographs of their children. We have a process in place that allows you to indicate that you do not give permission for us to take images of your children, or use them, and we will adhere to your wishes. We do not have the authority to insist that parents and visitors, who come to view student performances, not take photographs of these performances. We will con nue to request that such photography not occur and we will provide no fica on prior to each performance, so that parents can nego ate alterna ve arrangements with classroom teachers. Should you have concerns or wish to discuss this ma er please contact the office at either Derrimut Heath or Tarneit P-9 to arrange a mee ng with any member of the Principal Class Team.

Parent Teacher Interviews Parent Teacher Interviews will be conducted next week in both schools and I hope that you will take the opportunity to a end so that you can share your goals, aspira ons and expecta ons for your children with our team of dedicated teachers. I encourage you to maintain a posi ve, friendly rela onship with your child’s teacher and always arrange an appointment if you have any concerns about your child’s a tude to school or learning.

School Uniform I am very apprecia ve of the support that you have shown by ensuring that your children are in school uniform. The College uniform looks very smart and students do feel very connected to school if they wear

the uniform each day. It is very important that you are aware of the expecta ons regarding footwear and other items of uniform so I encourage you to read your copy of the uniform requirements, as was provided in your package of informa on, or collect a copy of the school uniform policy from the office or read the copies that are placed around the College. School Assessment Over the next few weeks we will begin some school based assessment tasks that will enable teachers to know your child’s needs in rela on to Literacy and Numeracy. They will also have a good idea of your child’s preferred learning style and they will be observing the way that your child relates socially with peers and teachers. This tes ng enables us to teach in a focussed manner in smaller groups. I enjoy sharing in the success that your children experience as they learn new concepts and skills and I am sure that you will as well. The assessment tasks that we do now are repeated later in the year and we get to see the amazing progress that our students make as a result of

mely relevant teaching and your support at home.

Students Arriving at School It is very important that children arrive at school about 15 minutes before the beginning of the school day. Children who arrive at school a er the designated school start me need to have a late pass before they go to their classroom and will almost certainly have missed important learning opportuni es. We do have before and a er school care programs opera ng so I suggest that children are placed in these programs should you need to leave home early or arrive late to collect your children. Teachers have mee ngs to a end at the end of the school day and hence no supervision is provided.

Traffic Issues Like most schools we have issues with the flow of traffic around our college. It is cri cal that adults show responsibility when driving around schools par cularly at the start and end of the school day. If everyone

obeyed the road rules and adhered to parking restric ons I am convinced that our problems would be greatly reduced. Be er s ll………I would encourage more families to allow their children to walk to and from school. Why not arrange for an adult to act as a “walking leader” for all the children in your street?? Families could take turns to be the leader, children would get valuable exercise and the traffic around Derrimut Heath and Tarneit P- 9 would be reduced. Last year we were able to access funds from Wyndham City Council to introduce a Traffic Plan at the Tarneit Campus and a great ini a ve Walk to School Wednesday is now in place. There are several advantages to encouraging your children to walk to school every day if possible. At the very least please support Walk to school Wednesday when it starts in a few weeks.

Staff Car Park The staff car parks are not walking thoroughfares for parents or students and I am very concerned that we will have a nasty accident if people ignore the request not to use the car parks as an access point to the school. I am also concerned that some staff members are being spoken to quite rudely when they are polite-ly asking people to take no ce of the signs sta ng that the car park is for staff only. Wyndham Rotary Fun Run My Rotary Club, Wyndham Rotary conducts an annual Fun Run / Walk at Chirnside Park where the proceeds go to the Royal Children’s Hospital. This year the Fun Run is to be held on Sunday the 28th of February and as a College we are encouraging all of you to enter. I am pleased to say that for some years we have had the most families par cipa ng, and hence, won the Schools Challenge and I hope that we can again this year. Please contact Mr Robbie Zammit or Mr Simon Fugazzo o should you wish to know more about this event. You can enter on line www.wyndhamfunrun.org Yours in Educa on, Looking Forward, Staying Ahead, Julie Mason College Principal

Change and loss are issues that affect all of us at some stage in our lives.

At Baden Powell College we recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separa on, divorce or related circumstances, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effec vely. Seasons for Growth is facilitated in small groups and is based on research that highlights the importance of social support and the need to prac se new skills, to cope effec vely with change and loss.

The program focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem-solving, decision-making, effec ve communica on and maintaining a support network.

Seasons for Growth runs for eight weeks and each weekly session is approximately 40-50 minutes. There is no cost for this voluntary program. This program runs at both campuses across the year. Students are grouped into age and developmentally appropriate levels. If you feel your child would benefit from this program, please chat with your child’s class teacher.

If you would like your child to par cipate, please fill in the tear-off sec on below and return to their teacher as soon as possible. You will be contacted when an appropriate group is to commence. I Am Poem

By: Meghana Pasumar DMC

I am friendly and caring.

I wonder if we will ever have world peace. I hear the screech of the peacock, as it fans its wings out and dances in the rain.

I see a flock of birds, flapping their wings to a rhythmic beat. I want a world of freedom, a world of peace.

I am friendly and caring. I pretend I am a fairy, gran ng peoples wishes and then disappearing in a cloud of sparkling

dust. I feel the so , falling raindrops, kissing me on the cheek as they descend from the clouds

above. I touch the fresh dewdrops, as they roll off the so petals of the bright pink rose. I worry for the Orange-Bellied Parrot, for its species is on the brink of ex nc on.

I cry for those who are not as fortunate as I. I am friendly and caring.

I understand that a peaceful world is long off, but my wish remains the same. I say that I am strong, that I am invincible.

I dream of a world without guns, without figh ng. I try to remain truthful and honest.

I hope my dream world will soon be a reality. I am friendly and caring.

Baden Powell College News

Welcome to Baden Powell College and the smooth beginning of your child’s school year!!

We have had a wonderful start to the 2016 school year with the students enjoying their first few days. To enable us to keep you informed of special events, celebrations and activities the Baden Powell College Newsletter will be available on our website each fortnight throughout the year. As it is one of our major forms of communication we would like to make it easy for you to have regular access to each issue so we have listed the dates of availability below, we will be emailing it to our families as well. Please take the time to read it so that you know what is happening at your child’s college. Simply go online and type in : www.bpc.vic.edu.au We would like to point out that it may be necessary for you to have Adobe Reader on your computer to access your newsletter.

Not only will you be well informed and enjoying colour photos, when perusing online, you will also be helping our environment. However, should you not be able to access a computer and would prefer your newsletter in printed form please complete the slip below.

If you have previously received hard copies of the newsletter you will be required to complete the form again so that we have updated details. Please complete the form below and return it to the office at your earliest convenience to enable us to provide your child with the printed copy of Baden Powell News. Have a wonderful term.
