In darkest outback Australia, Bad-Luck Baz was already on his third beer of the day. Onemore, he reckoned, and I’ll get out of bed and make breakfast. Baz had been on a roll forover a year now. All downhill rolling. He cursed the clairvoyant on a daily basis,sometimes several times a day.

Baz’s run of bad luck had started in December. By February of the following year, he wasa world-wide sensation – the unluckiest man in the world. Undisputed champion. Theclairvoyant had warned him it was ‘good news, bad news.’ If only he had listened. ‘Ifonly’ was a phrase Baz used a lot these days.

It had started innocently enough. Clairvoyant Kate had covered his marriage breakup andsubsequent divorce in surprising detail, gone to how he lost his job, and added somefascinating details Baz thought he had covered up well; she was good. It was then Bazmade his fatal mistake. “Don’t suppose you could give me Saturday’s lottery numbers"Baz had joked. She had held his left hand tightly – to allow physic flow, she assured him– put a pencil in his right hand and paper before him. She had then done a very credibleimpression of a trance.

With a good foreign accent for effect, she had reeled off:

1, 3, 10, 15, 18, 24, 28, 29, 32, 35, 38, 40

before collapsing on the table, completely drained by the effort. She was good, very good,Baz thought – lovely sense of theatre. ‘Ze seeks are in zere zomewhere’ she had assuredBaz.

Then she put on her most ominous look. ‘But, I zee gut and bad news. Knowing ze seekswinning numbers may bring you pain; be very careful.’ Sod you, Baz had thought – giveme the numbers and let me worry about being happy.

By the next day, the numbers had got to him. They wouldn’t go away. ‘What if the sixwinning numbers really are in there?’ The more he thought about it, the more convincedhe was. They WERE there.

But Baz had a problem. He counted up his meagre funds. $662 in total. He knew therewere 924 different six-number combinations in twelve numbers – but he hadn’t got $924.Still, he reckoned, if I play 662 different combinations I’m covering over two-thirds of allpossible combinations.

By lunchtime he was convinced. Baz sat down at the kitchen table and, starting at1-3-10-15-18-24, he started writing out as many six number combinations as he couldthink of, using only the twelve numbers the clairvoyant had given him.‘Ze seeks are in zere zomewhere’ he muttered to himself as he worked, carefullynumbering the games. By 8 pm he had got to 662 games – having stopped at 600 to counthis money again ‘just in case.’

The two-day wait to Saturday night had seemed an eternity. But the big day came. Hejust KNEW he had the winners.

Number 32 the blonde announcer beamed. Baz smiled. Number 28 she continued.Number 38; Baz now had a smile broader than the announcer. Number 40; the adrenalinflowed ever more strongly. Number 29 – Baz wondered if all lottery winners peed intheir pants, because he was about to. Number 35, number 35, he coaxed. Number 35 theannouncer beamed. People told Baz later his 'YES' had been heard three streets away. Allsix. Glorious. He poured a strong whisky and sat down to check how many wins he hadin his 662 games – Baz knew you got multiple winners with so many games.

The anxiety had started around game 200. Not a single winner so far. By game 400 hewas sweating profusely and his stomach was knotted. Nothing yet. Tears were welling upin his eyes by game 600 – no winners yet. The tears flowed at 662 games. It wasn’tpossible. There HAD to be a winner somewhere. He must have missed it. He went to thesink, splashed cold water over his face, poured another whisky and with a deep breathstarted re-checking.

Just after midnight, Baz acquired his “Unluckiest Man In The World” title. He had played662 of the 924 games possible with twelve numbers and hadn’t won a cent1. He spentthe entire night, staring into space, staring at the coupons, staring into space, staring at thecoupons. It is NOT possible, he kept telling himself. It was1.

Worse was to follow. The picture in Monday’s newspaper leapt out at him. “Clairvoyant‘sees’ Winning Lottery Numbers” the headline screamed. It was her. The bastard hadused the numbers herself and won $1,000,000.00. He felt like throwing up and decided toline his stomach with more whiskey, as a precaution. He sat down at the table, stunned,and started to read.

‘I did zis reading on Tuesday and ze numbers were so clear. For rest of the week, I look incrystal ball and all I see are ze weening seeks numbers. I lie down to sleep – all I see areze numbers. I just know they will come out. So I play zem, but I expect to share firstprize wiz the guy I give the numbers on Tuesday.

‘Biiiiiiiiitch,’ screamed Baz, a scream heard four blocks away. He read on. ‘But I only‘ave $262, so I cannot play a full system 12. I concentrate, concentrate, concentrate,trying to get ze best numbers to play. ‘Is this the luckiest woman in the world?’ the subheadline had asked. Bad-luck Baz read on. ‘Like I say, I can only afford 262 games – butevery single one won!’

‘#$@&* #$@ $%#@*$’ Baz howled. 262 games and every one wins! I play 662 andevery one loses. From the same 12 numbers. Baz had long since concluded the world wasunfair. Now he was certain.

After this, bad-luck Baz continued his downward spiral, while Clairvoyant Kate went fromstrength to strength. Her tatty little tent in a Sydney backstreet was replaced by flash newpremises close to the airport. The million she won on the lottery became chicken feedcompared to the income from her new business. She got a friend to set up a website andsold horoscopes by email. If each of the 50,000 email customers had known about theother 49,999, they would surely have wondered when Kate slept.

She took on an assistant – bookings were strictly by appointment now, no walk in off thestreet stuff. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals had arun on black cats named lucky who were on their seventh life - unable to meet demand, ittoo started renaming, much to the chagrin of older, more conservative, members.

Bad-luck Baz had his share of fame, but it was all of the wrong kind. An official entry inthe Guinness Book of Records as The Worlds Unluckiest Man was an honour Baz couldhave lived without. He had a second, short-lived record for 'TV presenter chucking.' Anidiot TV show host had asked one silly question too many and Baz proved man could flywithout wings. His throw, from the TV presenter's chair to the front row, was a goodthrow but a Sumo wrestler had upstaged it only two weeks later. Baz reckoned he hadcheated. The Sumo had lifted a TV presenter overhead before chucking and made thethird row. Baz had thrown underarm and reckoned his record should stand. Whatever, ithad bought a swift end to bad-luck Baz’s career as a TV celebrity.
