We have been enjoying some very crisp weather at the end of 2012 and, if it continues into 2013, we all need to be very careful whilst walking and

driving. Also why not make a resolution to make sure that elderly or vulnerable neighbours stay safe and warm?

Meanwhile, with the coming of 2013, the editorial teamwould like to wish all our contributors, readers and advertisers

A Very Happy New Year 2012 was a very eventful year for all of us with many memorable occasions

to savour in future memories. It was the year of the Queen’s Jubilee and Bacton, Cotton and Wyverstone threw themselves enthusiastically into the celebrations. Beacons were lit as part of a chain reaching across the UK, Tea Parties were held, Firework displays enjoyed and Bacton held a very successful Art and Craft Exhibition which reflected how much local talent is concentrated in our villages. Many local organisations and individuals contributed huge amounts of time and hard work to making our celebrations the success that they were.Another unforgettable National Event in 2012 was Britain’s hosting of the Olympic Games, and how lucky we all are to have been part of that. Our opening and closing Ceremonies were typically eccentric, creative and multi talented, reflecting Britain at it’s best. Anyone who was fortunate enough to get to the games themselves will have found the stewards to be unfailingly cheerful, welcoming and helpful. Although the experience of hosting the games was exciting and memorable in itself, the icing on the cake was how well we did in the games and how many medals we won.To cap it all, after losing the Wimbledon Championship, 2012 was the year that Andy Murray won Gold in the Olympics and ended Britain's 76-year wait for a male Grand Slam singles champion, with an epic victory over Novak Djokovic in the US Open final.Now we hear that our popular Royal couple, William and Kate, are expecting a baby. I’m sure everybody wishes them all the luck in the world and hopes for good health for Kate during the rest of her pregnancy and a beautiful baby for them both in 2013.2012 was indeed a great year for Great Britain and for many individuals in towns and villages across the country. Let us all go into 2013 inspired to make it another great year for all of us. Amanda Manley

Just GardeningThere isn't much going on in the garden during winter. If you’re like me, you can't wait for the Snowdrops to appear, this is always an early indicator Spring is just around the corner.Having said that I still find little jobs which require attention. Having cleared all the fallen leaves from my lawn and other parts of the garden I'm still finding some leaves blown in on the wind from my neighbours gardens, so I clear them up straight away. It's only a ten minute job at this time of the year and yet on a bright day it still gets you outside. When you come back into the warm of your home it's very satisfying to have done something. Also I've had a couple of terra-cotta pots crack in the cold frosty conditions. So I break them up and put the pieces in a bin ready for the crocks to go into the bottom of pots next season acting as drainage.Just recently I purchased a new wire rake, adding to my armoury of gardening tools. It has an adjustable sliding mechanism on the handle. This allows you to use it in the standard full size garden lawn rake position but then allows you to reduce the head down to a very narrow useful tool for getting in under bushes and shrubs. You may think you've collected up all the twigs and garden debris during your winter tidy-up but I was surprised how good this new tool performed getting into some inaccessible placed I can't normally reach. Saves a lot of bending as well.There isn't much flowering colour in my garden at present. Although I have had a good display of yellow winter flowering Jasmine and my old favourite Mahonia has performed very well. The Choiysa Sun Dance Evergreen is a splash of colour and is standing very proud in the border. Happy Gardening............Norman Parcell

Winter WildlifeSome people like to put extra food out for their garden birds' – especially in the winter which can be a real life-saver in harsh weather, and for many people wild birds feeding in their garden provide hours of entertainment.There is also an important knock-on effect for the organic gardener, if birds get used to searching for food in your garden in winter they will search for greenfly, caterpillars and snails during the rest of the year. Fresh water should be provided at all times, in a shallow container so birds can drink and bath without danger of drowning. If the bird bath is on the ground or in the form of a pond, then other animals, such as hedgehogs will use it and it is important to have sloping sides so that animals can get in and out. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETYPresident Philip Jeffries chaired the meeting.Chairman Diane Gladders said she was nothing without the support of the members and thanked them for the many and various jobs they had done including replanting the village hall border.Philip in turn thanked Diane and husband John for their input.Outgoing Treasurer Anita Leggett said the books had shown a deficit this year but this was partly due to providing the P A system for the hall.Philip said the Society does well and is long standing. Their contribution to the Flower Show is much appreciated as was the help given for the Jubilee Party a t The Manor and the P lant Containers which were organised by Graham Jenner and Bryan Symonds.The elections were held with Anita Leggett agreeing to stay on until February as Treasurer and the addition of Keith Parsons to the committee.Philip presented the Rose Bowl for most points in the Rose Show to Dianne Gladders and the members Cup to John Gladders for the Monthly Competitions.Will Gray presented Diane with flowers in gratitude of her excellent chairmanship.The Christmas meal on Tuesday, 11th December was finalised with the meal to be served at 7pm in Bacton Village Hall followed by entertainer `Nigel ‘Boy’ Syers.At the meeting on 13th February 2013, Graham Jenner will be speaking.The evenings speaker was Jenny Tyson on Japanese Gardens which she said is

an amateur interest although she had much knowledge to impart on this subject.The tranquil gardens stem from a need by the Japanese to escape the very crowded towns. Always included are rocks of odd numbers , still water, moving water, dry stones , raked gravel and hard pruned trees. Also shown on the slides were the beautiful cherry trees that grow everywhere and are much celebrated.Philip thanked Jenny and said he had been to Tokyo and saw that pockets ofsanctuary are needed there.The monthly raffle was won by Philip Symonds.Monthly Competition results:Jar of Chutney/Pickle. 1. BACTON & WYVERSTONE RBL WOMEN’S SECTION

At the October 2012 AGM all Officers and Committee were re-elected en bloc with the addition of Doreen Wynne who now joins the Committee.After all the business which included Chairman Angela Elmer thanking the members for their continued support, a Bring and Buy was run for the poppy Appeal by Doreen Wynne and Joyce Griggs making a profit of £51.The Christmas meal and entertainment will be held at the Park Hotel at Diss on Thursday, 13th December.7 members will be attending the County Conference and Christmas Celebrations on Saturday, 1st December at Needham.After refreshments and the draw, bingo was played with caller Maureen Gardiner who also organised the prizes.

The Poppy Appeal Coffee Morning was held at the home of Barbara Burrows on 6th November and realised over £200 profit from a raffle, bring & buy and teas.At the Remembrance Service member Carol Bartrum read the lesson

and the Chairman laid the Poppy Wreath at the War Memorial.Members were saddened by the passing away of member Marj Cowell over the Remembrance period.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION POPPY APPEAL 2012

Bacton & District RBL thank all who helped in any way to raise the grand total of £3204.08 for the Annual Poppy Appeal in our three villages, this was raised in various ways, the main ones being house to house collections, collection boxes at out local businesses and schools, church collections and the Eddie Palfrey Whist Drive. Also is included is money raised by the Women's Section at their October meeting where they held a bring and buy stall and a coffee morning held at Mayfield Lodge in November. Thanks must also be extended to Mr Monk of Cotton who drives a Galloway coach, mainly doing trips to war graves overseas and has a Poppy Collection box on his coach, this year he collected the grand sum of £34 (included in the above total) and 111 euros, which when changed into sterling will be added to the total, many thanks to him and his passengers.

Our Work club is a fairly informal gathering, but we can offer you some useful help and advice as you look for fresh employment. We know how difficult it can be when you are looking for work, but we can offer you help in writing your CV, preparing for an interview and writing job applications. You don’t have to live in Bacton - but we are not able to help you with travel expenses to get here.

Monday December 3rd 2012

Our December meeting was somewhat quieter than usual but enjoyable nonetheless. In the last few years we had been making our own Christmas entertainments in the form of quizzes, games, competitions demonstrations of cookery and craft and Carol singing. This usually resulted in a great deal of hilarity and lively conversation throughout the evening but on this occasion we decided to engage a speaker. We began the evening with a festive glass of wine and the ‘business’ was over fairly quickly so that Linda Scoles was soon able to take over with her talk on ‘Disastrous Christmas gifts’. She proceeded to entertain us by telling tales of Christmases past when she attempted to surprise her husband with witty and original gifts on a tight budget. These gifts often seemed to fall short of the expectations of her spouse apart from their very first Christmas as man and wife when she had been able to present him with a baby son. Unsuccessful gifts included a tool box bought for a husband who didn’t do DIY and a wooden toilet seat which turned out to have a split in it c a u s i n g p r e d i c t a b l y p a i n f u l consequences.. Linda’s talk was full of good humour and had everyone laughing along with her. After this we had refreshments provided by all of our members having brought a plate of food. The food was accompanied by a table Quiz compiled

by our new secretary, Angela Cook, in which we tried to guess the names of Christmas songs from clues provided. When the food was eaten, the quiz marked and prizes distributed there was still time for a testing game of ‘Give Us a Clue’ before we disbanded for the Christmas break.Our W.I. never meets in January so our next meeting will be on Monday February the 4th. At our first meeting of 2013 Nigel George will tell us when an Orange is legally a Banana!

REPORT

Colin Hall

Cotton Parish Council met on the 28th November 2013 when the design for the structure to mount the Jubilee Memorial plaque was presented by Councillor Williams, subject to approval by the Village Hall Committee Councillor Williams will undertake the construction at no cost to the Council. MSDC Councillor Stringer is to make inquiries at the District Council to endeavor to trace the registered owner of Common Land in Scuffins Lane. It was reported that Cotton residents are now making use of the Good Neighbour Scheme. Unfortunately Cotton Theatre Club has disbanded but Becca Gibbs, the organizer, hopes to run Drama Workshops during school holidays.

It has been brought to the attention of the Council that the bus shelter in Cock Road (which is not used ) could be put to use for the benefit of the community. The Council felt that residents should be asked for their ideas as to how this could be done, any ideas can be emailed to the Clerk, whose new email address appears at the end of this report or given to any Councillor.Dr. Dan Poulter our MP has confirmed that he will attend another Community Café later in theNew Year.The next meeting of the Parish Council will be held on Wednesday 23rd January 2013 at 7.30pm in the village hall.

CRISIS TIME FOR VILLAGE HALL

Bacton Village Hall faces closure unless more members of the community come forward to help to run it. This needs to happen by the date of our AGM at the end of February.

This building, which is at the heart of village life, has been supported by the parish council for many years. It has recently been discovered that the hall is not the responsibility of the parish council, but of the village hall trustees. This will inevitably increase the workload of the committee members who are also the trustees.

Unfortunately, illness and family circumstances mean that of the six committee members, only three are able to be actively involved. This small group of very committed people cannot take on the necessary fund raising or administrative tasks such as organising a maintenance fund or compliance with health and safety restrictions unaided.

If you have skills which would help us keep this vital asset going, and are prepared to give up a couple of hours a month, please contact us. We need active committee members to steer the future policy of the hall, and also helpers at fund raising events. We will be asking each local organisation which uses the hall to send a representative, but other members of the community are also needed.

A Word from the Curate

Another Christmas over, another New Year beginning; as we say good-bye to the old year our thoughts naturally turn to all that lies ahead. What will 2013 hold for us? Do

we feel superstitious about the number 13? How do we face the unknown?One suggestion lies in a little-known poem called The Gate of the Year. It is the poem quoted by King George VI in his Christmas Day broadcast in 1939.

I said to the man who stood at the Gate of the Year, "Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown." And he replied, "Go out into the darkness, and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than light, and safer than a known way."

Minnie Haskins (1875-1957)Britain was at war, and there was no knowing what the outcome would be, or how long it would last. The King quoted the words as an encouragement to his people at a time of great uncertainty; so when the champagne corks have all popped, Auld Lang Syne has been sung for another year, and the last chimes of Big Ben fade away, how will you approach all that 2013 holds in store for you?

I know that for me, it will be a case of putting my hand into the hand of God as he leads me on to the next stage in my journey. 2013 will mean for me a change of job, a house move and lots more people to meet as I leave the Bacton Benefice after Easter to take up a new appointment as Priest – in – Charge of the South Hartismere Benefice (just up the road!)

Throughout my training and my Curacy God has led me to the right places and the right people, and I trust that he will do it again. After all, he brought me here, and it has been one of the happiest and most fulfilling times of my life! I have been so grateful for all the support, encouragement, training and practical help I have received while I’ve been here. I have met some wonderful people, and have felt so privileged to be part of your lives through the baptisms, weddings and funerals I have conducted, as well as meeting you in your homes, at the lunch clubs, the schools, the coffee mornings and all the other activities that make up the life of a busy benefice. It will be difficult to say good-bye, but God never calls us to stay still; so I step out in trust and obedience to do the work he has entrusted me with in the new benefice.

My prayer for you is that whatever lies in store for you in the coming year, you will sense the hand of God guiding, protecting and blessing you and those you love.

In 2013 we are celebrating our 40th Anniversary and since 1973 we have given out grants, totalling more than £3 million, to help restore and preserve churches of all denominations. These grants have been a lifeline to struggling fund-raisers. The money comes from the annual sponsored church bike ride in September, from legacies and donations, but also from the subscriptions of the Friends of the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust.

In return for a minimum annual donation of £15 per person Friends are invited to an annual dinner, study days and other events. They also receive twice yearly newsletters about the work of the Trust in Suffolk.

Please become a Friend of the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust – your church could be the one that needs help in the future.

THE RETURN OF THE ANGELS?Hundreds of years ago, the angels of Bacton were torn from the church roof by the image-breakers.

Now there is a plan to replace these beautiful and symbolic figures, with each carved wooden angel celebrating the life of a person, or an event in the village.

So what is happening? The parochial church council has applied for permission to install 18 carved angels high up on St. Mary’s historic hammer-beam roof. They will not all take flight at once: this is a long time project and it could be many years before all the angels can be attached.

Each angel will be individually created by a skilled craftsman as the funds become available. The Friends of St. Mary’s have already promised to pay for the first of these, but it is expected that any further angels will be donated by individuals. The cost is expected to be between £2,500 and £3,000 per angel. Each angel will carry a dedication (not visible from the ground), and will be recorded and photographed in a book on view within the church.

Obviously great care has to be taken with a grade one listed building and English Heritage will need to be consulted. However, if the PCC’s application is successful, the first angels will be ready to fly next year.

We use the words “replace” rather than simply “install” because it is likely that the roof interior of St. Mary’s was once decorated with angels and the carved figures of saints. But if you look up into the roof now, all you can see is the sawn off ends of the hammer-beams – evidence that something has been removed. The records are silent about whether this happened during the Reformation or a hundred years later when Cromwell’s men set out to destroy “Popish images” from the nation’s churches. Some of our neighbouring churches managed to retain some angels – although many more were carved or extensively refurbished by the Victorians. Not a single angel survived in Bacton.

The aim of the project is simple: to leave the church a little more beautiful than we found it, in a way which involves the entire community. The angel project is currently being steered by a joint Friends and PCC sub committee.
