The members of Stowmarket and District Lions Clubare proud to be a part of the world's largest service organisation.Lions Clubs International was formed in the United States in 1917. The organisation reached the United Kingdom in 1950 and sustained growth now sees 1,350,000 Lions Club members active in 45,000 clubs in no fewer than 206 countries. All clubs throughout the world share the same ethic as in our motto - 'We Serve'. Our work is to help those less fortunate than ourselves with financial and practical help. This takes many forms beyond the simple raising of money and writing of cheques. The Stowmarket club has a strength of 47 members, making it the 9th largest club in the UK and Ireland, no mean achievement for an area of such modest population density, and we now have a Sister Club club of 20 members in Bury St Edmunds.Last year in Stowmarket we raised over £50,000 for our charity and activity accounts as well as offering practical help where it's needed. We have many regular activities that have become well known locally. These include theSportsman's Dinner, Boxing night, Santa's sleigh and, our rapidly growing bike ride through Suffolk's beautiful villages. We all meet together once a month for a business meeting to organise our work.In addition, there are always others of us meeting in small groups in betweento work on particular matters. The organisation and execution of these charitable events is evenly matched by a lively social calendar which sees at least one event each month. These enable the club to go to places and experience things that are very difficult to achieve as individuals or pairs. No fewer than nine of our number have been members of the club since the very beginning such is the strength of the fellowship that has developed. If you would like to know more about Lions Club International or think that you have anything to offer the club then please visit our website www.stowlions.org.uk or contact Peter Smith on 01449 780149If you require our assistance or want us to help someone please email Geoff Lowndes-Toole our community services chairman [email protected]

Bacton Bowls ClubIf you want to have a go at bowling before committing yourself, you are welcome to come along and have a go at any of the open drives, where you will receive a warm welcome and advice on the rudiments of the game whilst taking part. For these drives suitable flat shoes, such as trainers, must be worn. The club is affiliated to both EBA and EBF. We currently enter teams in 5 leagues - Stowmarket & District - 2 wood (Mondays), Tuesdayafternoon 2 rink Triples and Thursday Triples; Suffolk Area D Triples on Tuesday and Ipswich EBA Triples on Wednesday. As well as the leagues noted above, we enter some competitions and have regular friendly fixtures. The green is one of the better ones in Suffolk, with the club being used as a neutral green for county and district quarter finals, playoffs, etc.We are a friendly club of approximately 40-50 members with a well appointed clubhouse, including a recently modernised kitchen. Various social events, including BBQs and quizzes are held throughout the year. Subscriptions are very competitive with other clubs in the area. If you do not fancy bowling, you can always join as a social member and come to watch the bowling and attend the social events at discounted prices. We are seeking new members, especially younger ones, upon whom the future viability of the club depends. We are also willing to provide bowls training to newcomers.

TOWN PASTORS : Christian volunteers from various churches in Stowmarket and surrounding villages, patrol the streets of the town on Friday nights, with backup from their Base Prayer and Home Prayer teams. It is our aim to bring care and assistance to people who find themselves vulnerable through drink or drugs or who just need a listening ear, a word of encouragement or someone to arrange a lift home. The scheme has been running for 4 years this December and has gone from strength to strength, including a presence at ‘Latitude’. We are seeking to expand this ministry but need more volunteers - as Pastors, Base Pray-ers or Home Pray-ers. To find out more, please visit our website www.stowmarkettownpastors.org.uk or contact the co-ordinator on:T 07881 458119 E [email protected]

Welcome to the Mid Suffolk CentralSafer Neighbourhood Team.

In Suffolk, Safer Neighbourhood Teams are made up of Police Officers, Police Community Support Officers, Specials and Police Support

Volunteers. We are here to help you, so please get in touch with us if you need our assistance.

Speed or Safety, Slow Down for LifeThe Community Speed Watch (CSW) initiative allows members of the

community to address the issue of speeding by becoming actively involved in road safety by monitoring speeds at safe locations with speed

detection equipment. The aim of the CSW initiative is to address the problem of speeding through a partnership of the police the local com-

munity, parish councils and other partners. The aim of the initiative is NOT to catch as many speeding drivers as possible but:- to reduce speed in areas of concern; to make drivers aware that excessive speed is socially unacceptable; to re-educate drivers about the dangers of

speeding; and to address concerns from local residents about cars speeding through their neighbourhoods.

Where CSW has been implemented we can show a reduction in overall average speeds, and a significant reduction in drivers travelling well above

the speed limit. If you are interested in starting up such a scheme then please contact a

member of your Safer Neighbourhood Team for further details.

There is room to seat about 65 people at tables, or more if the building is used theatre- style. The hall has full facilities for disabled people, including a cooker and sink suitable for wheelchair users. There is parking space for 15 cars. Hiring the hall still costs local people from just £6 an hour, plus in some cases, a returnable deposit against breakages. The village hall is run by the village hall committee on behalf of the local community and is located in Church Road, opposite St. Mary’s Church.

!!!!!!LOCAL HISTORY

Suffolk is fortunate in that there is aLocal History Recorders Schemewhich has been running for anumber of years. The main purposeis to establish a network of peopleacross the county (ideally one ineach parish) to record the presentand to be on the look-out for itemsof historical interest that may beoverlooked and lost to futurehistorians.

These items do not just include theusual minutes books and manorialrecords but the full range of writtenand printed material such as (not anexhaustive list) letters, maps, accounts, diaries, title deeds, pamphlets, newspapers, catalogues, sports club records, businessrecords, photographs, drawings, parish magazines etc, plus all kindsof printed ephemera such asleaflets, tickets etc; the list isendless. Eventually all material willend up in the County RecordOffice and will then be available toall present and future historians. If you should have any material/records/photographs etc whichyou no longer wish to retain pleaseplease please do not throw themout. Pass them on to your localhistory recorder:

London 2012 brought many talented people to Britain. But did you know this happens every year? Thousands of bright young men and women come to study at our universities. Sadly, most have no contact with British people outside the campus. Some miss their families; many are curious about the real life of Britain. That’s why HOST arranges for them to spend a day, weekend or 3 days at Christmas as guests in hospitable homes. This is a great opportunity to get to know someone from another country, and help them to feel welcome. As a volunteer host, you could enjoy introducing a student of your choice to your way of life and perhaps to their very first Christmas. Please call David on 01508 483 838 or see www.hostuk.org.

Wyverstone Community Café Is normally held every other Saturday at Wyverstone Village hall, 10am - 12.30. Come along and enjoy home-made refreshments in a relaxed atmosphere. We also have a local produce market, where small-scale food and craft producers sell their wares. Locally grown pork and lamb, jams and chutneys and organically produced eggs are always available, as well as seasonal vegetables and fruit grown in the village.Run by Liz and Andy Mellen, the aim of this initiative is to shorten the distance our food travels from field to fork, helping to make food production more sustainable. The café is also an excellent chance to catch up with friends, read the papers, or find a book at the community book exchange. More information and dates for the café can be found at: www.wyverstonecafe.co.uk or in the Parish Newsletter.
