Bacteria organelles • Plasma Membrane-Lets certain things enter through the

pores but bigger things can’t • Ribosome-makes proteins• Cytoplasm- “molecular soup” in which organelles are

suspended and held together • Capsule – outside layer of bacteria. It is outside the cell

wall. Allows bacteria to stick to surfaces and protects it• Pili(us) – is the short hair like structure on the surface of

bacteria that allows for reproduction sometimes and transfer of information from one bacteria to another.

• Flagellum – is an organelle that has little hairs which help the bacteria move.

• DNA – nucleic acid which has the genetic instructions for the cell

• Cell wall – the layer that surrounds the bacteria, like a plant cell

Characteristics of life

• Metabolism- Ribosomes and cytoplasm • Respiration- between cell wall and membrane• Locomotion- Flagellum• Synthesis- ribosomes and pili• Transport- Cytoplasm, membrane• Regulation-Membrane and cell wall, capsule• Nutrition- Ribosome• Growth- DNA• Excretion- Membrane, cell wall• Reproduce- Pilus

Types of bacteria

• Three common types of bacteria are coccus, bacillus, spirillum.

• Bacteria are generally grouped together into three groups based on there shape. They are described as spherical, rod like, spiral or corkscrew. The term bacterial growth generally means the growth of a group of bacteria rather than a single cell. Single cells generally do not get larger in size, so the term growth refers to the reproduction of cells. Bacteria are generally grouped together into three groups based on there shape.

Fun Facts

• Bacteria is used to make yogurt• Bacteria doesn’t have a nucleus• Bacteria are one-celled organisms• Bacteria can reproduce in as little as 20 minutes• Bacteria come in different sizes• Bacteria are prokaryote• The largest known bacterium is Thiomargarita

Namibiemsis, which is one mm in diameter
