The Council on Aging offers six­weeksessions of "Powerful Tools" classeson a regular basis throughout theyear. The course is designed for those whocare for a parent, spouse, or friendwho lives at home, in a nursing home,or even across the country. The cost is$35 per person for materials. Free Medicare Part D Consultations It's back. The annual open enrollment period for Medicarebegins October 15, 2015, and runs December 7,2015. Medicare enrolleescan switch their currentMedicare Part D plan, orenroll for the first time. If you are currently in aMedicare Part D plan, theinsurer is required to sendan Annual Notice of Change to all of its members. This

week. Increasing demand for the program has nowbrought a third day of programming on the first andthird Fridays of each month. The daily fee is $35.

The November 12th meeting willfeature Dr. Alexandra Troy, anoptometrist who specializes in low­vision issues. The time for thismeeting will be noon ­ 1:30 p.m.

The Council on Aging is delighted to introduce a newprogram, the Memory Café. It provides socialization forpeople with mild or early­stage memory loss and their carecompanions. Social Service Coordinators will host this programat The White House, and will provide leadership and direction.This is a free program, thanks to generous donors, but you doneed reservations. Call Bonnie or Sue at 847­381­5030 to makeyour reservations and get more information. The Memory Caféis another #agingbetter program from the Council on Aging.

The challenges of living with memory losscan sever social connections at a time whenthey are needed most. Memory Café is aplace where people can relax and enjoythemselves and know that no one judgesthem. Both participants and carecompanions get the opportunity tosocialize and participate in fun activitiestogether while making new friendships and offeringsupport to one another. Café members will determine if theywant speakers or an educational component. Special activitiescould include outings to the theater, museums, and/orrestaurants.This program is organized and supervised bytrained and caring Council on Aging staff and volunteers.

Potential participants and their caregivers will be asked topre­register to determine their appropriateness for theprogram. Participants will be evaluated on an ongoing basis. Ifit is determined that the participant is no longer a good fit forthe program, the facilitator will help the caregiver and familywith the transition to a program that will better meet theirneeds.

To provide persons with mild cognitive impairments andtheir care companions the opportunity to join a programthat enables them to socialize with other people in a funenvironment;

To involve agencies, churches and other communityorganizations to help serve people with mild cognitiveimpairment and their care companions;

To offer care companions access to resources such assupport groups and information and referral services.

The Council on Aging's Memory Cafe will meet on the thirdWednesday of each month from 1:00­3:00 p.m. at theBarrington White House. There is no charge for this program,but please register at 847­381­5030.

Did somebody say "Lunch!" Join the Lunch Bunch on Mondays at the BarringtonPark District, 10:30 a.m. for games, entertainment,activities, and a freshly prepared and delightfully servedhot meal, all for $6. This congregate meal program is oneof our most popular, well­attended activities. ContactLinda Avellon for more info.

Then, you needto attend this programpresented by the Council on Aging and The Garlands ofBarrington on November 12, 2015, from 5:30­7:00 p.m.at the Performing Arts Center, 1000 Garlands Lane,Barrington.

Denise M. Brown, Founder of Caregiving.com., willpresent a practical workshop about how it feels to beburned­out: physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Familycaregivers may reach their limits, and still be in a positionof providing care. She will lead a discussion of therealistic, proactive steps a family caregiver can take nowto help battle those inevitable days of caregiver burn­out.

The evening will also include a light supper so that as acaregiver you will actually get a real break.

This educational program is free ofcharge, because of generous donors tothe Council on Aging; however,reservations are requested by Friday,November 6th, because seatingis limited. To register or get moreinformation, call the Council onAging at 847­381­5030.
