EEvery year millions of college stu-dents struggle to find ways to pay for their education. The nation’s high unemployment rate, highest

for those under 25 years of age, does noth-ing to help students who suddenly come across wallet-shrinking college expenses. Although plenty of scholarship opportu-nities exist, many struggling students do not qualify for need-based scholarships or grants. There may be different stances on

tuition increases, but one thing is for sure: students hate it. The National Center for Education Sta-tistics lists the average national in-state, undergraduate rate of tuition and required fees for four-year institutions during the 2009-2010 school year: $6,695 for public schools; $23,210 for private schools. Sta-tistics are also available for the Sunshine State: $3,452 for public schools; $19,116 for private schools.

UMiaMi: $1,600 per credit hoUr or flat tUition of $19,220 for 12-17 credits. fees are an additional $607.00 for fUll tiMe stUdents.

fiU: $177.56 per credit hoUr ($2,663.40 for 15 credits). fees are an addition-al $351.22 for fUll tiMe stUdents.

\\\\\ miami \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ miami \\\\\\\\\\ Compared to the previous 2008-2009 school year, Florida’s public schools in-creased tuition and fees by 4.83 percent, versus the national 6.07 percent increase; private Florida schools similarly raised their rates by 1.64 percent, compared to the nation’s 1.57 percent. In the last two years, tuition rates increased by about 15 percent. Florida’s most populated county is Miami-Dade. As such a people-packed re-gion, one can rightfully expect Miami-Dade County to host premiere post-secondary education facilities. Florida International University is one of the 25 largest universities in the nation with 44,010 students attending in Fall of 2010. With over 174,000 students attending, Miami Dade College claims to be “the larg-est institution of higher education in the United States and one of the most highly regarded colleges in the nation.” US News & Report ranked the private University of Miami at number one in the state and 47 in the nation. FIU charges $177.56 per credit hour, or $2,663.40 for 15 credit hours. An employee of FIU had stated a tuition rate of $136.10

per credit hour for the previous year, indi-cating a substantial rise of $41.46. Howev-er, one should note that the same employee contradicted FIU’s admissions webpage when she said this year’s rate is $145.56. The trend continues with MDC, but to a lesser degree. Tuition at MDC is $87.42 per credit hour for baccalaureate programs. However, all fees are multiplied by the number of credit hours; therefore, 15 credit hours cost $1,582.20, at $116.64 per credit hour. Last year, students had paid $105.22 per credit hour. The private UM raised their tuition rates for the upcoming academic year by $62 per credit hour to $1,600. Full time stu-dents receive a flat tuition rate of $19,220, an equivalent of 12 credit hours, which benefits those who enroll for the standard 15 hours. This flat fee sees a proportional $739 increase. While tuition may be rising, students must also be aware of rising fees, which can also have a big impact on one’s wallet. Although last year’s fee rates are un-available, FIU now charges $351.22 in ad-dition to tuition. As noted, MDC does not charge any

flat fees, instead opting to factor all fees by hours of enrollment. Of the $11.42 increase in charges, $4.94 is attributed to additional fees; out of the total increase in fees, a $3.00 per credit “Access and Parking” charge is brand new. In addition to the increase in tuition, UM raised other fees by a total of $170. Just like MDC, UM introduced a new $150 “Stu-dent Center Fee.” This new fee “Provides funding for the new student center project, which includes both a new Student Activi-ties Center... and also renovations and up-grades to the existing Whitten University Center.” Also interesting to note is the rela-tively new “Health and Counseling Center Fee,” which is stated to be “a mandatory fee for all new students... effective August 2010.” It was predicted by some sources that Florida’s tuition rates would rise between seven and 15 percent. To the relief of stu-dents, rates increased by a significantly smaller amount. The marginal increases are perhaps in effort to avoid backlash. Whatever the reason may be, students can unfortunately expect other costs to increase along with tuition.

UnIverSITy OF MIAMI STUDenTS no lon-ger need to wander off campus to find fresh, locally grown produce. In an effort to sup-port the health and well-being of its faculty and students, the UM Student Government has arranged for a farmers’ market to take place right on the Coral Gables campus every Wednesday from 9am to 2pm. The project was first brought to the table over a year ago by former Student Govern-ment president Christina Farmer. In a recent interview with The Miami Hurricane, Farmer explained, “People like a lot of fruit, especially living on a health-conscious campus, but they don’t always know where they can find it lo-cally.” Junior Alexandra Goldklang told The Mi-ami Hurricane, “I think it’s a really good idea

to bring healthy things to the students on campus... I mean, it beats Whole Foods.” Organizers of the farmers’ market expect around fifteen vendors to occupy the lawn near the post office on Wednesday mornings. They will sell items from fresh veggies, suc-culent fruits, and homemade pastries to kettle corn and natural soaps. Alternate farmers’ markets in the vicinity of the Coral Gables campus include the South Miami Farmers’ Market every Saturday from 9am until 2pm in front of City Hall and the much larger Coconut Grove Organic Market (presented by Glacer Organic Farms) which occurs every Saturday from 10am until 7pm on Grand Ave. The Coral Gables Farmers’ Market only takes place from January through March.

In A rOOM full of UM faculty physicians and UM President Donna e. Shalala, Governor rick Scott signed a sovereign immunity bill on July 1, 2011, at Jackson Memorial Hospi-tal. This bill grants protection from civil suits to private university physicians who treat pa-tients at public hospitals. At the ceremonial bill signing, State rep-

resentative Frank Artiles stated that he felt honored to sponsor this “important piece of legislation,” and that “teaching hospitals will continue to play a vital role in our commu-nities.” President Shalala agrees with Artiles about the importance of the bill, stating that the bill will secure the future of the state’s physician work force.

enough advisors at fiu

Monique RodriguezFlorida International University

WHILe THe FIU Undergraduate Advising office proudly stands by its belief of quality academic advising being an essential component to a suc-cessful academic career, many students consider their services inadequate. With statistics from Fall 2010 reporting 9,227 lower division under-graduate students enrolled in the university, the average of 15-20 advisors available for freshmen and sophomores appears unable to satisfy the great need in question. Conversely, juniors and seniors are directed to the upper division advis-ing offices of their particular program of study, where extraordinarily in many cases, the amount

of advisors available becomes even smaller even though they account for 23,674 students as of Fall 2010. With ongoing student complaints re-garding limited advisors as well as advisors’ inad-equate ability to assist the students, a handful of departments are taking the necessary measures to address the issue through email and phone ac-ademic advising. Santiago Sellan, FIU Criminal Justice Senior said, “While trying to schedule an appointment to speak with an advisor the recep-tionist asked if I wanted to get advised in person or over the phone. I just had to call at that time and spoke directly to my advisor.”

EEight research teams were formed in the most recent round of funding, receiving a total of $112.5 million, The University of Miami’s rosenstiel

School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (rSMAS) earned a spot as the lead institute for the Consortium for Advanced research on the Transport of Hydrocarbons in the en-vironment (CArTHe). According to UM’s press release, the ob-jective for this team is to “accurately predict the fate of hydrocarbons found in crude oil

that were released into the environment, helping to guide risk management and re-sponse efforts to minimize damage to human health, the economy and the ecosystem.” Tamay Ozgokmen, lead investigator and rSMAS professor, explains, “This event is like the Moon Mission for oceanography - an important and challenging problem with immediate social impact. This is the kind of focus that brings scientists together.” He gathered a team of 26 principal in-vestigators from the Gulf States and beyond.

Thirteen of them were selected from UMi-ami. Ozgokmen states, “It was amazing how easy it was to assemble the CArTHe team; it was a matter of looking at our own expertise, then calling on colleagues from other insti-tutions for the missing pieces of the puzzle. everyone was ready and eager to put our ideas together within days. now, we are all looking forward to working together, and getting started on this new project, as well as collaborating with other consortia funded by the GrI.” By

erIC STevenS’S story began in 2010, when he won a $2,500 grant from the University of Mi-ami for a business plan advocating for medical marijuana dispensaries in Florida. Stevens used the winnings to travel to California, visit dispen-saries, and attended Oaksterdam, where he took advanced classes on the business of government-regulated pot selling. He later teamed up with Ford Bannister (part of the Denver decriminaliza-tion fight) to create Sensible, an organization ad-vocating marijuana reform in Florida. This sum-mer, Stevens stood up in front of the Miami Beach Commission, and fought to get a ballot vote for decriminalizing weed in SoBe, without success.

rUDy MAGe, long-time graffiti artist and grad-uate of AI, launched InkedPro 5 years ago in a 500 sq ft. efficiency. now his creative group works from a 5,000 sq ft. studio in the Wynwood Art District and has expanded now offering full service graphic design and printing. He says that the best part of running a business is creat-ing exactly what you want; and the hardest part is having no one to blame but yourself when things go wrong. rudy admits that the competi-tion in his industry is overwhelming and he has seen a lot of people give up on it. But he says to never give up on what you want because “noth-ing that comes easy is worth the keep.”

FIU ALUMnUS and former football star Andy ‘Silent rage’ Leavine scored an elusive World Wrestling entertainment contract after compet-ing in the hit USA show WWE Tough Enough. Leavine beat 13 other contestants. The final match was held at Florida Championship Wres-tling in Tampa, FL. Stone Cold Steve Austin, known as WWe’s most famous, or infamous de-pending on who you ask, superstar announced Leavine’ victory. Austin then proceeded to give Leavine a Stone Cold Stunner, Austin’s signa-ture finishing move. This was after vince Mc-Mahon, chairman of WWe, slapped him in the face. Welcome to wrestling kid. By

After being unexpectedly cancelled in 2010, fans rejoiced when ticket sales opened for the 2011 ELECTRIC FOREST in Rothbury, Michigan. The (hopefully) annual event features a beach with constant music and barbecues, a forest that houses hammocks to chill in by day and be-comes a glow-in-the-dark wonderland of colorful lights by night, and five stages to continually pump out music for four straight days. You can also find a huge water-park and even a life-sized game of mouse trap. This year’s event included awesome artists such as String Cheese Incident, DJ Tiesto, Bassnectar, and Chiddy Bang, to mention a few.

For the first time, Bassnectar held the BASS ISLAND festival in New York City, creating “a unique world to explore, beyond the realms of a normal concert experience.” The festival lineup included Lupe Fiasco, Z-Trip, Prefuse 73, Virtual Boy, Dave Nada, and Joro Boro. On Bass Island, Lupe Fiasco successfully surfed the melodic tsunami that is Bassnectar’s womp. He shredded beats, hammered the drums and gave the bass heads something to stomp to. Bassnectar successfully executed their goal of creating an amalgam of music, art, and culture on Governor’s Island.

Very relaxed and comfortable, The Local is the perfect place to kick back a few after a long day. They have a wide selection of rare and exotic beers on tap, an extensive wine list, and some great foods you have never heard of. The ambiance is mellow with low jazz music playing in

the background and framed photography on the walls. The crowd is a bit more upscale than usual, but the staff was very helpful and friendly, ready to suggest a drink or appetizer to new customers. Happy hour is usually weekdays from 4pm to 7pm and boasts most beers at half price.

Grand Central might just have one of the best sound system and light show combos in Miami. This venue is a huge converted warehouse equipped with three full bars, plentiful seating and a big stage that frequently hosts live music. The venue dedicates itself to booking a variety of up and coming

musical artists. The stage area has a huge LED b a c k g r o u n d and tons of m u l t i c o l o r e d lights that really put on a show. There is also an outdoor area with a pool table and another bar that tends to be a little quieter. Drinks and cover charges can be expensive and most nights are 21+ but there are some events that are 18 and up.

The Pickle is a really cool joint. The main of three areas is a dimly red lit smoky dance floor surrounded by comfortable seating and of course, the bar. The upstairs is where the party really starts to kick off; it’s a wide open dance floor with a great light show and the biggest disco ball you’ve ever seen and is usually packed wall to wall. The outside area is great to get away from the loud music, which is generally a few DJs spinning house and minimal techno, have a seat, and enjoy some pool, foosball, or ping pong. Regular priced drinks can be steep, and the cover can be too, so go early and make use of the open bar until midnight.

For the past 3 months, Frankie’s has been under new management and many changes have taken place such as a revised menu, a new website and daily specials. Frankie’s Pizza is known for having the biggest pizza in North Miami, which is made to order and it won’t break your wallet. Frankie’s also has hot and cold sub sandwiches, burgers, pasta, salads, desserts, and a variety of appetizers and sides. You should swing by Frankie’s if you are up in North Miami. No ride? No problem. They deliver!

Club Came is one of those clubs that you can attend on many occasions and always have a good time. As soon as you walk in there is a bar on the dance floor and the perimeter of the club has couches and lounge chairs. The middle of the club is a VIP section with poles and go-go dancers. There is also the option to party upstairs! Cameo hosts tons of exclusive events so it never gets old. The music is consistent and there are plenty of bars in the club so you don’t have to worry about fighting crowds for a drink. If you are a clubber, then you need to put Cameo on your party list!

Murphy’s Law is an Irish Pub located in the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. They have some of the best drink specials in town. Where else in Miami can you get a Long Island Iced Tea for $5.00? That’s going to cost you at least $12-15 anywhere else! On Thursday’s, Murphy’s Law has a college night catered exclusively for

students and the drink specials last all night long! Every night, Murphy’s Law showcases live bands and DJ’s so instead of some generated play list that you get at most clubs, you are jamming out to live music. If you want a good place to go to get drinks for the low you should definitely head to Murphy’s Law.

The Vagabond is a fantastic alternative to the top 40 hits club scene. DJs play great music ranging from old school hip-hop, to electronic and dub step and the full bar often offers great drink specials and prices. The two main inside rooms get flooded with loud music, ambient, color changing lights, artsy wall pieces and a low key

hipster vibe while the outside terrace is a bit quieter and has a very interesting fire fountain surrounded by seating. The crowd is almost all college aged and will be wearing anything from tank tops to cocktail dresses. There is usually a cheap cover and some nights are 18+ while most are 21 and over.
