To establish universal standardized backing procedures and signals to be used throughout the department.To establish what to look for when performing a 360 walk around.

Why we need thisWhy we need thisBacking accidents account for a high percentage of emergency vehicle accidents each year. Backing accidents not only cause damage, but can result in severe injuries and death.We have noticed several different signals being used throughout the department. To establish what we are supposed to be looking for when performing the 360.

General rules for backingGeneral rules for backingAlways have a minimum of 2 people on the ground one at the rear and one at the front.Turn rear spotlights on when backing at night. Do not aim them directly at the spotter as this could blind him.Never stand directly behind the vehicle being backed. Especially when backing up to trailers.Used standardized hand signals.

Continue Backing StraightContinue Backing Straight

To be used when all is clear and the driver is not close to the stopping point.Night: Flashlight overhead in same motion.

Turn Left or RightTurn Left or Right

Used when the driver needs to turn to the left or right.Night: Flashlight in left or right hand (direction desired) waggle.

Near Stopping Point and Stop Near Stopping Point and Stop SignalsSignals

The near stopping point signal is used to help the driver judge the distance until the stopping point.The stop signal is the final signal to use when the vehicle should completely stop. Night. Hold light on still spot on ground. Light in mirror.

360 Walk-around360 Walk-aroundCheck to make sure all hoses are secure in their beds.Make sure the ladder rack is up and the aerial is bedded.Make sure all compartments are securely closed.

Check under the entire undercarriage of the truck.Check for objects beside the truck that you will have to negotiate around.Check overhead obstructions.
