Nic Fallowfield is a conductor, violinist and teacher. He has been co-leader of the English String Orchestra, co-principal first violin with the Royal Northern Sinfonia and co-leader of Sinfonia Viva. He was the leader of Orchestra of the Swan in its early years and has been guest leader with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Welsh Chamber Orchestra, among many others. His playing now is almost exclusively as 1st violin of the Tedesca Quartet which he founded in 2010. The quartet has a busy concert schedule and is widely praised for its coaching courses. Nic was a student of the great Hungarian pedagogue Bela Katona and was himself a highly respected teacher at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire for nearly thirty years. After a period of intense study with the renowned conductor George Hurst, Nic was invited to make his professional debut with a series of concerts in Finland in 1991 since when he has conducted in France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Romania and Greece. He conducts youth orchestras and amateur orchestras throughout the UK. He is conductor of the Beauchamp Sinfonietta and Musical Director of The Midland Sinfonia, a professional chamber orchestra based in Alvechurch. Nic was appointed conductor of the Charnwood Orchestra in 1997.

Our 2019-20 season begins in Barrow with a programme featuring Richard Lewis as soloist in Mozart’s best-known horn concerto, and Haydn’s penultimate symphony. November’s programme features the young Czech violinist Markéta Nádvorníková performing Bruch’s ever-popular G Minor concerto, and concludes with Prokofiev’s final symphony. This season’s January concert is an all-Viennese affair featuring many favourites from the Strauss family, and we are delighted to welcome back Elizabeth Ryder as soprano soloist. In March we welcome young Loughborough cellist Danushka Edirisinghe to perform Elgar’s elegiac concerto. The concert also includes what Schumann described as the “Heavenly lengths” of Schubert’s majestic “Great C Major” symphony. In May the Orchestra visits Scotland again and will perform in Glasgow and Stirling. The programme will include Elgar’s cello concerto, this time with the young American cellist Madelyn Kowalski as soloist – see our website for more details. Our season-finale in June aptly features two famously ‘sunny’ works Dvorák’s delightful violin concerto, with the young Polish violinist Olga Eckert as soloist, and Brahms’s second symphony.

Founded by Joseph O’Reilly, Director of Music at Rawlins College in Quorn, the Charnwood Orchestra was originally known as the Quorn Orchestra. The Orchestra now performs a wide variety of repertoire and works with soloists of the highest calibre. The Orchestra is now based at Humphrey Perkins Community College in the neighbouring village of Barrow upon Soar. Under the direction, since 1997, of Nic Fallowfield the Orchestra performs five concerts each season at venues around Leicestershire and has undertaken a number of successful tours to France, Ireland, Scotland, north east England, Dorset and, most recently, Wales.
