It’s not that no onetells you, it’s that whenyou’re a wide-eyed, 15-year-old high schoolfreshman, you justdon’t listen. At least Ididn’t.

Your grades mat-ter. Every grade in

every class during all four years of highschool is imperative.

Your audition for college com-mences the day you get to high school. The classes you take, the grade pointaverage you compile, the activitiesyou’re involved in over your four years,it all counts. Your body of work will belooked at collectively, and you have toperform throughout if you wish to gainentry to the college of your choice.

The writing is on the wall. The mes-sage of ‘do well now and go to a goodcollege’ is drilled into students’ headsad nauseam throughout their firstmonths in high school. I remember themessage being delivered to me count-less times by my parents, teachers andacademic advisor. Unfortunately, somestudents don’t apply this message untilyears later, when it is oftentimes toolate.

To paraphrase a line from countrymusic artist Braid Paisley, when you’re ayoung high school kid, it’s hard to seepast Friday night.

Ain’t that the truth? When I was a high school freshman,

the only things that went through mymind were sports, parties and girls. These thoughts are not uncommon formost of that age, but the problem was, that’s all I thought about.

Never did the idea that what I wascurrently doing in school would impactme four years from then wrack my

brain. It was too far away. So for two years, I skated by. I did

the bare minimum amount of work toachieve just decent marks. There weremy occasional A’s in gym class or wood-shop, but the top-tier grades wereabsent from my quarterly report cards, and I usually brought home C’s or C-minuses. I was on a collision course fora below-average career.

At some point early in my junioryear, students were asked to prepare abrief list of colleges they were interest-ed in attending. We developed the listsin preparation for a mandatory, one-on-one meeting with an academic advi-sor. Without reservation or research, Icreated a list of my ideal schools.

A few days later, I had my meeting;it was there that I experienced my aca-demic apocalypse.

“No, no, no, no.” Some ten times Iheard the word, and with it, my aspira-tions were dashed. It was like I suddenlycame down to earth and saw everythingclearly. No longer was being the captainof the soccer team important; no longerwas the party coming up in a few daysimportant; no longer was the girl Icouldn’t stop thinking about even athought in my mind.

Where I stood, I wouldn’t have beenable to get into, or even come remotelyclose to getting into, any school I haddesired. If I continued down the path Iwas following, I would have had only ahandful of schools to choose from, nonewith the attributes I was looking for.

It was then when I decided it wastime for a change. I worked my tail offfor two years and hit the books hard. Idid everything I could and put in aneffort that far surpassed anything Iwould have imagined in prior years. When other seniors were taking it easy

their final year, I was cramming andmaking up for lost time. I completelyturned the corner, nearly doubling myprevious grade point average and rais-ing my stock substantially.

I ended up getting into a reasonablygood school, Roger Williams University, from which I graduated this year. I got agreat education and had a great time.My high school rollercoaster ride res-onated with me so much that when I gotto college I left no stone unturned. Iworked hard throughout and got farenough ahead to actually graduate asemester early.

I turned the corner, but after goinghalfway down the wrong path, I foundmyself dangerously close to being leftout in the cold. Needless to say, it wouldhave been much easier to havebypassed my two-year detour. I reflectupon where I could have ended up had I

put in the same effort all four years.Don’t let it happen to you So here’s where I will border on

sounding somewhat hypocritical; reallyI’m just trying to help.

I won’t tell you not to worry aboutthe game you have later that night orwhen you’re going to meet up with yourfriends and hang out, because thatwould be impossible. Just worry aboutyour studies, too.

Whenever it seems like college istoo far away, it’s not. Whenever you feellike blowing off a quiz or homeworkassignment, don’t. Whenever you feellike its just okay for you to skate by andget the average grade, it’s not. Do thework. It will be worth it.

Work hard every day, because everyday will matter four years from nowwhen you want to hand-pick the schoolof your choice.

BACK TO SCHOOL 2010Friday, August 20, 2010 17

If I had to offer onepiece of advice to ahigh school student —and yes, both this col-umn and Dan’s aredirected toward highschool students; we’reboth far too young toopine to parents about

their children’s educations — it would bethis, however cliché it sounds: know thy-self, and act accordingly. This mantra Iwish I had followed more faithfully in myown teenage years.

At the risk of making a joke of myself,I’ll offer my experience.

I joined my high school’s cross-country and track and field teams in myfreshman year. I mostly hated it, and mygoodness, if I could describe how bad Iwas at it, I would do so. Suffice it to say Itried everything — distance running, short sprints, middle distance runs, relays — and never managed to comewithin a few seconds of the second-slow-est runners’ times.

Each day I watched with dreadfulanticipation as the last several minutesof seventh period slid away before head-ing to the locker room, enduring somelight ribbing from teammates, dusting offthe cobwebs and abiding yet anotherthree-mile, four-mile, five-mile run; yetanother grueling weight-room session;yet another instance of the feared “twominutes of hell,” a semi-regular abdomi-nal workout regimen the memory ofwhich haunts me to this day (okay, not

really, but it was pretty terrible).Point is, it might have kept me fit,

and I certainly enjoyed the camaraderieof a great group of guys, several of whomwere close friends off the track, but I wasnever a great athlete. I never enjoyed it, Inever got very good at it, and perhapsmost importantly, I didn’t really care if Iever did. I was barking up the wrong tree.

Now, I’m not going to say it was atotal waste of time, or that I spent twoyears pursuing something I found

absolutely no joy in, but I will say thathigh school is a time to dabble. It’s goodto commit to activities that you like, andsometimes it takes a while for things togrow on you, but it doesn’t hurt to shoparound a little bit. Try out the track team, the math league, the photography club, the debate team, the chess club, or thedance club — or all of them. Get to knowyour strengths and weaknesses. Figureout what you really like to do.

Given what I now do for a living, Irealize it wouldn’t have killed me tospend more time writing for my highschool newspaper. Sure, I wrote a fewindie rock reviews, but this was 2003 —

before indie rock was in vogue, longbefore Sigur Ros and Wilco sold songs toadvertisers, and when Modest Mousewas known for the vision and grandiosityof albums like “The Moon andAntarctica” and not the pop sensibility ofsingles like “Float On” — so I’m prettysure my work there went mostly unno-ticed.

At any rate, the “know thyself”mantra is valuable beyond your selectionof extra-curricular activities and your

pop music preferences. If I had a time machine, I would go

back to 2004 tell my 17-year-old self tokeep his hourly job, figure out what hewants to do with his life, and take a fewyears off before diving headlong into achallenging — and very expensive — col-lege career.

As it played out in reality, I spentthree semesters tooling around and pre-tending I wanted to be an engineer —yes, an engineer — before I got a grip andswitched to liberal arts and journalism.

Not that there’s anything wrong withbeing an engineer. My father is an engi-neer, and I would be a hell of a lot better

off financially if had been one too, but ittook me a year and a half of $20,000semesters to figure out that it just wasn’tfor me.

I managed to graduate in four yearsanyway, by taking summer courses andshouldering full courseloads for myremaining five semesters — and I still cutit pretty close.

Sometimes, I think, high-schoolgraduates are too quickly compelledtoward college educations and notencouraged to consider the alternatives— military service, trade work, or variouscareer paths that don’t require a collegedegree. At the very least, don’t go divinginto something that’s going to cost you aton — and I do mean a ton — of moneyover a long period of time if you’re notsure you want to work through it. A lot ofcollege students drop out, and a lot ofcollege students spend six or more yearstrying to slog through four-year pro-grams. I have friends that have doneboth, and they’re intelligent people.

Don’t get me wrong. Some kids knowwhat they want to do when they’re 14years old, and some kids are happy toexplore various fields of study in collegebefore they pick a path. There’s nothingwrong with either of those arrangements. In retrospect, neither was the case forme.

People are different, and as long asthey know what they want, what they’regood at, and where they want to go,they’ll ultimately find themselves walk-ing down a path that leads them there.

The Naugatuck School District todayannounced its policy for determining eligi-bility of children who may receive free orreduced price meals served under theNational School Lunch and SchoolBreakfast Programs or free milk servedunder the Special Milk Program.

Local school officials have adopted theUnited States Department of Agriculture’s(USDA) Income Eligibility Guidelines fol-lowing family size and income criteria fordetermining eligibility.

The following income guidelines willbe used in Connecticut from July 1, 2010 toJune 30, 2011 (or until new income guide-lines are issued by USDA) for determiningeligibility of participants for free andreduced price meals and free milk in theChild Nutrition Programs.

Children from families whose incomeis at or below the levels shown are eligiblefor free or reduced price meals or free milk.Application forms are being sent to allhomes with a letter to parents. To apply forfree or reduced price meals or free milk, households should fill out the applicationand return it to the school. Additionalcopies are available at the principal’s officeat each school. The information providedon the application is confidential and willbe used only for the purposes of determin-ing eligibility, and may be verified at anytime during the school year by school orother program officials. Applications may

be submitted at any time during the year.Application forms for the SupplementalNutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) (for-merly known as Food Stamps) orTemporary Family Assistance (TFA) house-holds require the child’s name, the child’sSNAP/TFA case number and the signatureof an adult household member.Households receiving assistance under theSNAP/TFA programs will be notified oftheir eligibility and their children will beprovided free benefits unless the house-hold notifies the school that it chooses todecline benefits.

Households receiving SNAP benefits orTFA for their children should only submitan application if they are not notified oftheir eligibility by September 3, 2010.Households receiving SNAP benefits or TFAfor their children may receive a direct certi-fication letter from the Department ofSocial Services. These letters will automati-cally qualify a child for free meals or milkand may be submitted instead of an appli-cation to the school.

Application forms for all other house-holds require a statement of total house-hold income, household size and names ofall household members. The social securitynumber of an adult household membermust be included or a statement that thehousehold member does not possess one.The adult household member must alsosign the application certifying that theinformation provided is correct. In certaincases, foster children are also eligible forthese benefits. If a family has a foster childliving with them who is a legal ward of theState of Connecticut, that child is consid-ered a family of one, and monthly personalincome from the State must be reported.

Under the provisions of the policy fordetermining eligibility for free and reducedprice meals, the school administrator

will review applications and determineeligibility. If a parent is dissatisfied with the

ruling of the determining official, he/shemay wish to discuss the decision with thedetermining official on an informal basis.

If he/she wishes to make a formalappeal, a request either orally or in writing, may be made to Wayne McAllister, 380Church Street, Naugatuck, Ct., 203-720-7203 for a hearing to appeal the decision.

The policy contains an outline of thehearing procedure. Each school and thecentral office of the school district has a

copy of the policy which may be reviewedby an interested party.

If a household member becomesunemployed or if household size changesat any time, the family should contact theschool to file a new application. Suchchanges may make the children of thehousehold eligible for reduced price meals, free meals, or free milk, if the familyincome falls at or below the levels shownbelow.
