School District Ready To Launch Full-Day KindergartenFlorio Explains What To Expect In 2014/2015

    by Michael Torelliherald staff

There are still some odds and ends to be wrapped up before august comes to a close, ensuring that students returning to cheshire schools will have no obstacles when re-entering class.

however, for cheshires young-est learners, this year comes with new territory, as they will be placed among the district schools with fel-low first-through-sixth graders due to the implementation of full-day kin-dergarten.

classrooms are still being prepared for the full-day curriculum, which was approved during the towns operating budget cycle in april. Mi-nor construction changes are needed prior to the students return, but will likely be completed well before school starts.

having full-day is going to be a very interesting transition for us, and one that im very excited about, superintendent of schools dr. greg

Florio stated.as of July 28, 225 students were

enrolled for kindergarten. approxi-mately 4,560 students are enrolled overall, Florio said, and he expects that both numbers will fluctuate prior to the first day of classes.

One of the biggest changes regard-ing full-day will be at darcey school, which, up until now, had been home to all kindergarten students. how-ever, because sessions had been split into morning and afternoon classes, the school did not require a kitchen but, with the new schedule, the dis-trict has installed a kitchen area that is equipped to warm food items and has also purchased a pre-owned van to be used as a food transportation vehicle that will deliver meals from chapman school to darcey.

all the preparations are certainly well underway, Florio said.

the Waterbury road school has undergone upgrades outside as well, as the driveway has been paved and equipped with a new access route installed to allow for delivery of lunches.

six new teachers and six instruc-tional assistants have been hired for full-day kindergarten and, before school starts, a teacher orientation will be held to discuss the changes to the curriculum. Full-day kinder-

garten employees will be the only brand-new faces in cheshire, Florio explained. approximately 14 teach-ers retired after taking advantage of the districts offered retirement in-centive.

although Florio has not yet final-ized the amount, he said the district will most likely save approximately $300,000 because of the incentive.

For those students who have moved well beyond kindergarten, the smarter Balanced assessment consortium (sBac) should be un-derway this year, Florio said. after implementing the field test during the last school year, sBac has worked out the final touches and will likely be used this year for those in grades three through eight, and grade 11.

the real test is supposed to be somewhat more individualized, Flo-rio explained. depending on how students answer a question dictates what the next questions are.

should a student show mastery of the subject, sBac will not repeat similar questions. however, for those who did not accurately answer, a cor-responding question will follow.

Both faculty and students now have experience with sBac and will be prepared come next spring. the administration has more time to

Technology A Must For StudentsShopping for back-to-school supplies was once limited

to picking up a few folders, spiral-bound notebooks and assorted writ-ing implements. But todays stu-dents need much more, including a variety of technological gadgets, to keep up with their classmates.

technology is now an integral part of many classrooms, where internet-ready devices such as tab-lets, computers and smartboards are part of daily lessons. although some educators believe overuse of such devices in the classroom can have a negative impact on students and make it more diffi cult to capture and hold students attention, many feel that technology integrated into the curriculum improves students learning processes and outcomes, noting that interactive media and use of technology are conducive to project-based learning.

Many students already know how to browse the internet, create blogs or manipulate photos. But they may not know how to make use of digital resources with regard to their educa-tion. students cannot learn such les-sons unless they are equipped with the tools to facilitate digital learn-ing. Parents who want their young-sters to embrace technology as part of their education may want to con-sider the following devices.

    * internet-ready devices: inter-net-ready devices include desktop

computers, laptops, chromebooks, tablets, and even smartphones. as-signments may require that students use the internet, and many of to-days teachers create their own web-sites where they list assignments or post links to supplemental materials. students may have to confer with teachers via email or share materials with classmates.

    * Word-processing applications: Whether students are writing a 20-page term paper or have to type up a short summary for a homework as-signment, eventually they will need access to word-processing software that includes basic typing, editing and desktop publishing functions. Many computer software bundles come with a word processor pre-in-stalled. if not, software is available for purchase or parents can down-load free shareware. examples of word-processing software include Microsoft Word, Wordperfect, text-Maker, corel Write, and google docs.

    * high-speed internet: house-holds that have not yet upgraded to digital internet services are well be-hind the times. Many cable and fi ber optic television providers now offer television, internet and phone bun-dles for reasonable fees. compared to the dial-up services and initial coaxial internet of yesteryear, to-days internet speeds are light years ahead. students who need to stream

movies or other content or upload and download large picture or text fi les often fi nd high-speed internet invaluable.

    * digital planners: Many devices come with calendars and planner functions built in, and those that dont can often be upgraded by sim-ply downloading an app that per-forms such functions. a calendar is a handy tool for students who need to keep current on assignments and tests, extracurricular activities and other important dates to remember. students may want to lean toward a calendar app that is integrated across many platforms. this way calendar events can be synched and viewed on phones, laptops and tablets.

    * Phones:#smartphones are akin to mini computers capable of more functions than one can imagine. Kids can use their phones to get a head start on homework assign-ments or to email teachers if they forget an assignment at school. in addition, students who have their own smartphones can easily contact their parents in case of emergencies, and parents can rest easy knowing their kids are always just a phone call or text message away.

depending on the courses they take, students may need additional gadgets, such as graphing calcula-tors, scanners and printers. Parents can speak their kids teachers to de-termine which devices will support lessons students are learning in the classroom.

should fill out the applica-tion and re-turn it to the school. addi-tional copies are available at the princi-pals office at each school. the informa-tion provided on the ap-plication is confidential and will be used only for the purposes of determin-ing eligibil-ity, and may be verified at any time during the school year by school or other program officials. applications may be submitted at any time during the year. appli-cation forms for the supplemen-tal Nutrition assistance Program (sNaP) or temporary Family as-sistance (tFa) households require the name of the person in the house-hold receiving the sNaP or tFa benefits and their case number. the signature of an adult household member is also required. house-

holds receiving assistance under the sNaP/tFa programs will be notified of their eligibility and their children will be provided free ben-efits unless the household notifies the school that it chooses to decline benefits.

households receiving sNaP benefits or tFa for their children should only submit an application if they are not notified of their eli-gibility by september 9, 2014.

    additionally, households receiv-

ing sNaP benefits or tFa for their children may receive a direct certi-fication letter from the department of social services. these letters will automatically qualify a child for free meals and may be submit-ted instead of an application to the school.

application forms for all other households require a statement of total household income, household size and names of all household members. the last four digits of the social security number of an adult household member must be included or a statement that the household member does not have one. the adult household member must also sign the application certi-fying that the information provided is correct.

Foster children who are under the legal responsibility of a foster care agency or court are eligible for free meals. a foster parent does not have to complete a free/reduced

meal application if they can sub-mit a copy of the legal document or legal court order showing that the child is a foster child. addition-ally, a foster child is categorically eligible for free meals and may be included as a member of the foster family if the foster family chooses to also apply for benefits. if the fos-ter family is not eligible for free or reduced price meal benefits, it does not prevent a foster child from re-ceiving free meal benefits. Note, however, that a foster childs free eligibility does not automatically extend to all students in the house-hold.

under the provisions of the policy for determining eligibility for free and reduced price meals, Madeleine c. diker, food service director, will review applications and determine eligibility. if a par-ent is dissatisfied with the ruling of the determining official, he/she

it is with great enthusiasm that we welcome our class of 2018 to cheshire high school. the sophomore, junior, and senior classes have all set a high bar, but will also prove to be wonder-ful mentors on your path to success. the faculty, staff, and administration have been working throughout the summer to make sure that you have a wonderful experience this year. in the life of a school, summer is a time for rebirth. We have replaced classroom and hallway lighting with bright and energy effi cient led lights. the West gym is currently being reno-vated and upon completion will have a new fl oor and new heating and air conditioning! the improved energy effi ciency in the new unit allows us to run both heat and air conditioning at a lower cost than the heat cost us on its own.

cheshire high school has identi-fi ed multiple goals to assist our stu-dents, staff, and families in helping us reach our mission of the enhancement of student understanding. We are embracing the demands of the com-mon core state standards which set a high bar for not only content mas-tery, but application of the cheshire Performance standards. as we make strides in curriculum development to challenge our students in new ways,

we will also be working on strate-gies to provide feedback to our stu-dents about their mastery of the criti-cal performance standards. Making strides in these areas will only help enrich the tremendous reputation we hold dear.

Please remember that many of our upper classmen and teacher volun-teers have been planning for a com-prehensive orientation for all grade 9 students and those new to us on Wednesday, aug. 20. We hope that you enjoy the rest of your summer and we look forward to welcoming you back to school for another out-standing year!

the cheshire Public school sys-tem appreciates your patience while we address the large number of re-quests for changes that are received at the beginning of the school year. Board of education Policy 3541

states, Bus routes shall be estab-lished to provide the safest and short-est routes as economically as pos-sible. Based on this combination, transportation requests are addressed with highest priority being the safe-ty of students, followed by routing changes caused by road construction, assigning bus stops for new students, reducing the routes that take longer than 50 minutes after the first two weeks of school, and inputting these changes into the computer system.

    6. in addition, parents are asked to pay close attention to the following policy of the Board of education:

Parents/guardians are responsible for the actions and safety of their children walking to and from and at the bus stop and to and from the school assigned. Please note that a parent, guardian, or responsible

older sibling must be at the assigned bus stop of a kindergarten student or student with special needs when the bus picks up or delivers the student to and from school. students in grades one through 12 will be dropped off at their bus stop regardless of whether or not a parent or designated individ-ual is waiting for them.

    st. Bridget schoolPrincipal Marge Whalen

the faculty and staff of st. Bridget school warmly welcome our students to the start of the 2014-2015 school year. We begin the year with much excitement and joy. Our new pastor and priest di-rector, Father Jeffrey V. romans, has been instrumental in oversee-ing and coordinating several ac-tivities for the parish and school. We are looking forward to a par-ish picnic on sept. 14, and a golf tournament to benefi t our school on sept. 30, to kick off the year.

teachers have been busily pre-paring lessons and classrooms in anticipation of the arrival of our students on aug. 26. We welcome Ms. lisa Mcguire, 7th grade homeroom and history/social stud-ies teacher, to our middle school team, and Mr. Manuel Joaquim, who has joined our staff as tech-nology coordinator.

We continue to provide a rigor-ous academic curriculum integrat-ing faith, culture, diversity and respect for life with the goal of graduating students who are vir-tuous citizens prepared to have a positive impact on the lives of oth-ers. Our student ministry program will once again emphasize out-reach and service to the cheshire community and beyond.

classroom visit dates to meet the teachers, see friends and class-mates, and drop off supplies will be on aug. 21, from 3 to 4 p.m., and aug. 25, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. a reception for our new fami-lies will take place on aug. 30 in the parish center immediately following the 4:30 p.m. Mass. Please visit our website at www.stbridgetschool.org for additional information.

to all of our neighbors and friends, have a wonderful and pro-ductive school year.

    FENCING

The dawn of a new school year is an exciting time. Kids may not want to say goodbye to days spent lounging by the pool, but such disappointment is often tempered by the prospect of re-turning to school with friends.

For parents, getting kids ready for a new school year is about more than updating their wardrobe or organizing carpools with fellow parents.

reacclimating kids to the rou-tine of school after a relaxing sum-mer is a signifi cant undertaking, and the following are a handful of ways for parents to get a head start as the school year draws closer.

establish a routine over the last few weeks of summer. summer va-cations typically lack the structure of the school year, and that lack of structure can help kids unwind and make the most of the freedom that summer vacation provides. But as summer starts to wind down, par-ents can begin to reintroduce some structure into their kids' lives to make the transition back to school go more smoothly.

Plan morning activities so kids can readjust to waking up early each day. in addition, serve break-fast, lunch and dinner at the same time you typically serve it during the school year so kids' bodies can begin to readjust as well.

take kids along when shopping for school supplies. if you plan to buy your child a new computer or other supplies for the upcoming

school year, take him or her along on your shopping trips. Kids who get to choose their supplies might be more excited about returning to school than those youngsters who are given what they need without offering their input.

Monitor or assign summer reading. Many students are given summer reading lists to keep their minds sharp over the summer and prepare them for upcoming coursework. Parents should moni-tor kids' progress on such reading lists and even discuss the books with their kids when possible. read the books along with them if you think it will help engage them.

if kids were not assigned sum-mer reading lists at the end of the school year, assign your own books, rewarding kids when they fi nish a new book. Kids who read throughout the summer may be more likely to start the school year off on the right foot than those who don't crack a book all summer.

encourage kids to sign up for extracurricular activities. Many school-aged athletes get a head start on the new school year by trying out for sports teams. such tryouts often commence a week or two before a school year is sched-uled to begin, and this can help kids ease their way back into the school year.

But even nonathletes can begin pursuing extracurricular activities before the fi rst school bell of the year rings.

theater programs may begin auditions or encourage interested youngsters to attend orientation meetings before the dawn of the school year, and such sessions can be a great and pressure-free way for kids to ready themselves for a new school year.

the arrival of a new school year can be both exciting and daunting. But parents can help their young-sters readjust to school in various ways after a relaxing summer.

prepare an adequate schedule to mini-mize disruption of regular classes, and students are breaking away from the connecticut Mastery and con-necticut academic Performance tests.

the district is also judiciously implementing the common core curriculum, Florio said, although

Upgrades Happening At Several Schools Over Summersignifi cant changes to the lower grade levels have already been completed.

energy saving projects have been ongoing due to company amerescos performance contract initiative. led lighting has been installed at Norton school and is currently being com-pleted in chs. the high school is undergoing a change to its electric-

based heating system, and weather-ization methods have been upgraded to reduce the amount of wasted en-ergy, according to Florio.

ameresco is not the only ones working on school upgrades, as the district has upgraded the chs West gym fl oor and abated asbestos. dis-trictwide fl oor replacements are ex-

pected to be completed after this year, if funding is approved by the town council. carpet removal is based on the conditions of the fl oor, so there is still work to be done in a number of schools, Florio explained.

a good example would be the fi rst fl oor at dodd (Middle school), he said. the fl oor was carpet, now its tile, so thats a very visible change.

sMart Boards have been in-stalled in a majority of classrooms and the districts phone systems are currently being upgraded, which will give teachers the ability to call out in the event of an emergency. the district has requested use of the Peck-Jones fund for the second phase of the chs World language lab, which provides more individualized learning programs. With the upgrade

to technology in the lab, students at a higher level may be able to fur-ther challenge one another in small groups while others continue to mas-ter the lesson.

despite the upgrades, Florio noted there is an ongoing battle with the ag-ing infrastructures. in the 2014/2015 capital budget requests, the district appropriated $250,000 for window replacements, as a majority are still single-pane glass windows. coupled with very thin exterior walls, heat will continue to escape in spite of adding a more effi cient boiler or heat-ing equipment, Florio said.

everything that we do is certain-ly to try and maintain and keep the buildings in the best condition that we can, Florio added. i just think some of them are old and tired.

and the central offi ce of the school district has a copy of the policy which may be reviewed by an in-terested party.
