Superintendent of Schools Dr. Greg Florio, shown giving a speech to students at Dodd Middle School’s Commencement Ceremony in June.

by Josh MorganHerald Staff

There are 11 days left of sum-mer vacation but, whether they want to admit it or not, Superin-

tendent of Schools Dr. Greg Flo-rio believes students are getting excited for the new school year.

When the calendar fl ips from July to August, it signals that school is approaching. Florio,

who is entering his 21st year in Cheshire, nine as superintendent, said when that calendar changes everyone begins to think about the upcoming year.

“I don’t know if the students will admit this, but they’re think-ing about school,” Florio said. “We all bemoan summer coming to an end, but I think there is ex-citement to get back.”

When the fi rst day of school hits in less than two weeks, on Aug. 27, students and parents won’t notice too much of a differ-ence within the district. There are more than a dozen new teachers, a handful of new administrators, and no major building projects have been completed. Through retirements and leaves of absence, there will be approximately 20 new teachers in Cheshire. Florio also noted that three new teach-ing positions have been added to Doolittle School to help combat large class sizes. There are also fi ve new administrators in the dis-trict. Darcey School, Dodd Mid-dle School, and Cheshire High School all have new principals, while Highland School has a new assistant principal. The district also hired a new Director of Pupil Services.

“We’ve had a lot of administra-tive turnover (over the years) but this is a lot in one summer,” Flo-rio remarked.

Technology is something stu-dents will likely notice when they step into their classrooms at CHS and Dodd this year, as both schools are 100 percent cov-ered with wireless internet ca-pabilities. While the elementary schools have hot spots, Dodd and CHS are covered and students can access the secure network with a password. This past year, students at Cheshire High School

were able to bring in devices, like smartphones, laptops and tablets, and connect online. More than 500 students would access the network daily, Florio explained. At Dodd, Florio was unsure if all students would be allowed to bring devices or if a pilot group would be selected. Florio noted the district is working on a one-on-one technology initiative that would allow students to use their own devices in the classroom or use a loaner device provided by the school.

“Hopefully it will move for-ward,” Florio stated. “This is a the digital age and we need to meet (the students) at that level.”

Some teachers have been trained in new technologies, as classrooms across the coun-try are changing from how they looked 25 years ago. Florio also explained the idea of the “fl ipped classroom” that some teachers could implement for a class, a section, or simply one lesson. For instance, one English teacher last year noticed students were not

reading assignments at home, so the traditional classroom model was “fl ipped.” The students were then assigned reading work dur-ing class, and wrote papers at home.

“It’s about trying to meet the needs of different learners,” Flo-rio said.

On the administrative side of things, Florio said that, with edu-cation reforms passed recently, the district will begin to prepare for the upcoming changes, such as the elimination of the Connect-icut Mastery Test. New evalua-tions for teachers and administra-tors are also being implemented in 10 pilot districts across the state. Graduation requirements will be changing over the next decade and certain aspects of math and language arts curriculum will be changed.

“The big focus this year is on these reforms, but I don’t think we’ll have to hit the brakes and go in a whole other direction,” Florio said. “I don’t think it will impact us signifi cantly.”

As the time ticks closer to the classroom being back in session, so to does the re-emergence of The Cheshire Herald Schools section of the paper. From September through June, the Herald publish-es a weekly section of the paper that focuses solely on the students that make up this community. As such, we are always looking for good stories and interesting tales to tell. If you or your child is participating in an interesting event or activity, or if your class is holding a special function or project, make sure to contact John Rook at [email protected] or call (203) 272-5316.

The back-to-school season is fast approaching. This is a time of school bus traffi c on the roads, anxious parents snapping fi rst-day-of-school photos, and children meeting their new class-mates and forging new friend-ships.

This time of the year is also one when parents and students must shop for school supplies. Tradi-tion dictates that families will fl ock to stores after dismissal and shop for folders, binders, pens and protractors. Caught up in the moment, many shoppers choose convenience over low prices on school supplies. Parents could end up at the check-out line with a considerable bill to pay, par-ticularly if they are shopping for multiple students. Buying items in bulk -- and sharing the cost -- may be a more affordable option.

Although it can be easy to pro-crastinate and wait until school starts to buy supplies, it might be prudent to shop before the new school year begins. Many teach-ers, in an attempt to help parents save money, publish school sup-ply lists online in advance of the school year. Most teachers do not vary their requirements from year to year, so if your son or daughter has been assigned a teacher, ask around among last year's students to see what that teacher requires. This way you can head to the store or comparison shop online at your convenience.

Some supplies are standard regardless of class assignment. These include pens and/or pen-cils, folders, spiral notebooks, copy paper, looseleaf paper, erasers, crayons, markers, and highlighters. Purchased individu-

ally, the per-unit cost of each item may be higher than purchasing these items in bulk. This is when the advantage of buying in bulk shines through. Here are some helpful hints for parents about to shop for school supplies.

* Shop for frequently used items in bulk, whether from on-line wholesalers or through a warehouse store at which you are a member.

* Collaborate with a few differ-ent school parents to chip in for school supplies. Then one parent does the shopping and splits the supplies with the others.

* Keep a stockpile of supplies at home. They do not expire, and next year you may not have to shop at all.

* Having extra supplies on hand enables duplicate sets for at home and in school for consis-tency.

* Some parents like to buy many supplies and then donate some for underprivileged chil-dren. This time of year manufac-turers or retailers could actually donate a portion of school-supply proceeds to some educational or-ganizations.

* Buying larger quantities of supplies could enable you to build up rewards points at certain retailers. This may entitle you to future coupons or dollar awards that can be put toward more ex-pensive items, including tablets or graphing calculators.

* Contact the teacher and see if you can volunteer to buy all of

the supplies in bulk for the entire class, with each student then pay-ing the required amount. This will save many families time and ef-fort.

* If you have a friend or fam-ily member who is a teacher, fi nd out if he or she can purchase your school supplies. Often teach-ers are eligible for a discount on

school supplies.* Purchase bulk quantities of

certain supplies and fi nd out if they can be sold as a fundraiser for the school. A portion of the sales will go to the PTA.

Buying school supplies in bulk can save money and provide an opportunity to give something back to the school community. A note from

Cheshire High School Principal Jeff Solan

It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome our class of 2016 to Cheshire High School. The soph-omore, junior, and senior classes have all set a high bar, but will also prove to be wonderful men-tors on your path to success. The faculty, staff, and administration have been working throughout the summer to make sure that you have a wonderful experience this year. In the life of a school, sum-mer is a time for rebirth. We have been able to complete extensive carpet replacement giving our fl oors new life. The Commons have a new look and we have sev-eral new staff. While I may not be a new face to many of our stu-dents, I am excited about my new start at Cheshire High School as well.

Cheshire High School has iden-tifi ed multiple goals to assist our students, staff, and families in helping us reach our mission of the enhancement of student un-derstanding. The administration will focus on improving com-munication and collaboration be-tween all stakeholders.

The staff and administration will work on our ability to meet the needs of the diverse learners

who enter our classrooms each day so that all students may meet their potential. Cheshire High School staff will also be review-ing our curriculum and making adjustments to meet the expecta-tions of the Common Core State Standards. Making strides in these areas will only help enrich the tremendous reputation we hold dear.

Please remember that many of our upper classmen and teacher volunteers have been planning for a comprehensive orientation for all grade nine students and those new to us on Tuesday, Aug. 21.

The Cheshire Public Schools have announced their policy for determining eligibility of chil-dren who may receive free or reduced price meals served un-der the National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs. Breakfast is only served at Dodd Middle School and Cheshire High School.

Local school offi cials have ad-opted the United States Depart-ment of Agriculture's (USDA) income eligibility guidelines fol-lowing family size and income criteria for determing eligibility.

The following income guide-lines will be used in Connecticut through June 30, 2013 for deter-mining eligibility of participants for free or reduced price meals in the Child Nutrition Programs:

To determine annual incomes:multiply by

Weekly 52Every Two Weeks 26Monthly 12If income is reported as twice

per month, convert to annual in-come.

Children from families whose income is at or below the levels shown in the chart on this page are eligible for free or reduced price meals. Application forms

are being sent to all homes with a letter to parents. To apply for free or reduced price meals, house-holds should fi ll out the applica-tion and return it to the school. Additional copies are available at the principal's offi ce at each school. The information provided on the application is confi dential and will be used only for the pur-poses of determining eligibility, and may be verifi ed at any time during the school year by school or other program offi cials. Ap-plications may be submitted at any time during the year. Appli-cation forms for the Supplemen-tal Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Temporary Family Assistance (TFA) households re-quire the name of the person in the household receiving the SNAP or TFA benefi ts and their case number. The signature of an adult household member is also required. Households receiving assistance under the SNAP/TFA programs will be notifi ed of their eligibility and their children will be provided free benefi ts unless the household notifi es the school that it chooses to decline benefi ts.

Households receiving SNAP benefi ts or TFA for their children should only submit an application if they are not notifi ed of their eli-gibility by September 30, 2012.

Additionally, households re-ceiving SNAP benefi ts or TFA for their children may receive a direct certifi cation letter from the Department of Social Services. These letters will automatically qualify a child for free meals and may be submitted instead of an application to the school.

Application forms for all other households require a statement of total household income, house-hold size and names of all house-hold members. The last four dig-its of the social security number of an adult household member must be included or a statement that the household member does not have one. The adult house-hold member must also sign the application certifying that the in-formation provided is correct.

Foster children that are under the legal responsibility of a fos-ter care agency or court, are eli-gible for free meals. A foster par-ent does not have to complete a free/reduced meal application if they can submit a copy of the le-gal document or legal court order showing that the child is a foster child. Additionally, a foster child is categorically eligible for free meals and may be included as a member of the foster family if the foster family chooses to also ap-ply for benefi ts. If the foster fam-ily is not eligible for free or re-duced price meal benefi ts, it does not prevent a foster child from receiving free meal benefi ts. Note

however, that a foster child’s free eligibility does not automati-cally extend to all students in the household.

Under the provisions of the policy for determining eligibility for free and reduced price meals, Madeleine C. Diker, food service director, will review applications and determine eligibility. If a par-ent is dissatisfi ed with the ruling of the determining offi cial, he/she may wish to discuss the decision with the determining offi cial on an informal basis.

If he/she wishes to make a for-mal appeal, a request either orally or in writing, may be made to Dr. Greg J. Florio, Superintendent of Cheshire Public Schools, 29 Main

Street, Cheshire, CT 06410, (203) 250-2400 for a hearing to appeal the decision.

The policy contains an outline of the hearing procedure. Each school and the central offi ce of the school district has a copy of the policy which may be reviewed by an interested party.

If a household member be-comes unemployed or if house-hold size changes at any time, the family should contact the school to fi le a new application. Such changes may make the children of the household eligible for re-duced price meals or free meals, if the family income falls at or be-low the levels shown in the above graph.

The National School Lunch Act of 1946 signed by President Harry Truman came about as a result of the armed services not being able to draft healthy and fi t men for military service; many young men during that time were malnourished. Today, the child nutrition program is still a matter of national priority since today’s armed services reject one in fi ve recruits due to obesity. The Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 is a signifi cant piece of legislation that updates the meal patterns and nutrition standards of the school lunch and breakfast programs and also trys to address the issues of obesity in America.

Connecticut is one of the states that has led the nation in provid-ing a healthy food environment on the entire school campus dur-ing the school day. Certain pro-visions of the Healthy Hunger

Free Kid’s Act 2010 were mod-eled after Connecticut’s Healthy Certifi ed Districts and its strict nutritional standards ensuring all ala carte purchases by students during the school day were sold food with reduced in fat, sugar, and sodium and served in the age appropriate portion size.

It will be no surprise to many families that Cheshire’s school breakfast and lunch programs, a Connecticut Healthy Certifi ed District, already meets most all of the new USDA requirements.

Fifty percent of grains served must be whole grain rich in year 2012-2013, and 100 percent of all grains served in 2013-14 must be whole grain rich. We have been serving brown rice, and whole grain hamburger, hot dog and dinner rolls for years, as well as some whole grain pizza crusts.

A note from Doolittle School Principal Sharon Weirsman

The Doolittle School commu-nity is ready to welcome the start of the 2012-2013 year.

Our building is in great shape with bright new tile fl oors in our lobby and a beautiful brick walk (a PTA fundraiser) in our court-yard. We welcome approximately 540 students this year.

Our staff has expanded to ac-commodate our student body with fi ve classrooms at each grade level, except grade six, which has three.

We are pleased to introduce our new staff members: in grade one, Sarah Kristiansen and Dani-elle Witte join our team; in grade fi ve, Elizabeth Orwick and Sara

Smith are on board; and in our art classroom, Byron Pierce is ready to begin. We also welcome four new part-time teachers to our li-brary, physical education, art, and general music roles: Mary Kate Pagett, Andrew Steinway, Melis-sa Kish, and Jamie Sima will join our team.

In addition, Deborra Zello will manage our cafeteria and Kat Makoja will join as a special education instructional assistant. Our Doolittle School Strategic Plan goals for this year include a continuation of our Respon-sive Classroom implementation, a focus on the Common Core State Standards, particularly in writing and math curricula, and a continuation of our work as Data Teams, analyzing student work and planning for increased stu-dent achievement.

We wish everyone a warm wel-come back!

A note from Darcey School Principal Ann DonneryDarcey School would like to welcome the class of 2025! Orientation sessions for kindergarten will be held on August 27 and

28. The purpose of the orientation is for kindergartners to become fa-miliar with their classroom, their teacher, and riding the bus safely. While students are visiting the classrooms, parents will be attending an informational session with the new principal, Ann Donnery. First day of regular school begins on Aug. 29. Everyone at Darcey is looking forward to a new and exciting school year full of learning, friendship and fun!

A note from St. Bridget School Principal Marge Whelan

Welcome to a new school year and with it come all of the promises of new beginnings. The summer work is winding down - fl oors are scrubbed and polished, walls have been freshly painted, books are arriving, and class-rooms are in order waiting for the arrival of our students. Technol-ogy continues to be upgraded to meet the expanding needs of our school with new laptops, soft-ware, and expanded WiFi. We look forward to rolling out our new On Line Campus Communi-ty Portal to keep members of our community updated on academ-ics, special activities, and extra-curricular events.

At St. Bridget School, we fos-ter a culture of educational ex-cellence and we will continue to build upon critical thinking skills and offer an innovative and rigor-ous curriculum with an emphasis on moral education, community, and service. To our returning fam-ilies as well as to the 68 new stu-dents joining us, we warmly wel-come you. Our classroom visit dates are on Aug. 22 from 3:30 to

4:30 p.m. and Aug 23 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

We look forward to seeing all of you as we begin a new school

year together. To all of our colleagues and

friends in Cheshire, have a fabu-lous year.

Parents of children who are having diffi culties grasping school lessons routinely turn to tutors to provide the added mea-sure of instruction some students need to succeed. When selecting a tutor, parents should ask ques-tions and keep important things in mind.

Tutors provide a much-needed service to students and can be welcome helpers for teachers. According to reports from state and federal government tutoring advisors, close to $10 million

annually is spent on tutors in the United States alone. Although many teachers try to tailor lessons to students with various learning capabilities, there may be in-stances when some students still fall behind. What's more, some students perform better with the one-on-one teaching style of tu-tors than they do in a group set-ting.

There are certain signs a student may need a tutor. These include students consistently earning fail-ing grades, complaining about or

giving excuses why they don't want to do homework, behaving badly at school, or complaining that they simply don't want to go to school. All of these issues may be a child's way of masking diffi culty grasping lessons. A tu-tor can step in to catch a student up with lessons and help him or her fi nd a system of learning that works.

The fi rst step to fi nding a tu-tor is working with the student to determine what type of tutor may be ideal. Tutors come in different forms:

* Students who volunteer their time helping fellow classmates. There are also alumni who pro-vide tutoring services for low or no cost.

* Teachers who may offer tu-toring after school hours.

* Some churches or other or-ganizations offer tutoring avail-ability.

* There are online services where students can get home-work help or assistance in differ-ent subjects.

* Private tutors that come to the student's home and provide instruction.

* Tutoring companies and fran-chises where tutoring may take place in a learning facility.

Selecting a tutor* When interviewing prospec-

tive tutors, parents and students should be sure the tutor is quali-fi ed. Experts suggest fi nding a tutor who has fi ve or more years of experience. If the tutor will be

offering lessons in a particular subject, certifi cation or a degree in that area is very helpful, but not always necessary as long as the tutor is effective.

* Students often meet with a tutor one to three times a week per session. The tutoring arrange-ment can stretch on for several months. With this in mind, the tutor-student relationship should be a good one. The child should feel comfortable with the tutor.

* Tutors should know the mate-rial but also be able to explain it in layman's terms to the student. A good tutor will outline a plan on how he or she will help im-prove performance but also how the tutor will check to be sure the student maintains improvement.

* Find a tutor who will be open to interaction with the student's primary teacher. This way lessons can be geared around schoolwork and coincide with what's already being learned.

* Parents will need to be hands-on and take an interest in what the tutor and the teacher have to say. Observing the tutor in action can

help determine whether the fi t is right or a new tutor needs to be brought in. Parents can wait for fi ve to eight sessions to pass be-fore determining if the tutor is clicking with the child.

* Select a tutor who agrees to periodic progress reports. It is not too ambitious for parents to expect marked academic perfor-mance after a month or more of tutoring.

* Cost is always a factor when selecting a tutor. A higher hourly rate isn't always indicative of a better tutor. Depending on the subject matter and certifi cation of the tutors, costs can range from $20 an hour to $50 or more. Shop around for a tutor and remember to emphasize the tutor's relation-ship with the student more than what the tutor charges per hour.

Tutoring is often a helpful way for students who are falling be-hind in the classroom to redeem themselves. Hiring a tutor should be done at the fi rst signs of learn-ing diffi culty, not when it seems things are too late to institute change.

John Rook/Cheshire Herald

Connor Keith, 6, kicked off the summer a little early with some pizza at the KidsCare Relay For Life event held in June.

We will be ready for the 100 per-cent whole grain challenge next year.

Non-fat and one percent milk options only is another standard laid out. We have have reducing the availability of whole and two percent milk over the past three years, and we have met this crite-ria a year early.

We have already met the zero trans fat standards, and less than 10 percent saturated fat overall average for the menus.

Cheshire Food and Nutrition Services has already exceeded the variety of fresh fruit and veg-etable requirements of the past regulations. As a result, our pro-gram easily meets the increased

fruit and vegetable offerings that are now mandatory for all schools across the nation. The biggest challenge for us will be the week-ly beans and legume requirement. Our staff has been challenged to come up with kid-friendly dishes and we look to parents for ideas and support as we meet this chal-lenge.

Reduction in sodium is being phased in over a decade and we will have no problem this year in keeping our sodium levels at the new lower fi rst phase.

The most noticeable changes will be with the reduction in por-tion sizes for the meat/meat al-ternates and grain sizes. We are working with our vendors and manufacturers on this and, as

always, for the students that are more physically active and re-quire more calories than the stan-dard lunch may provide, we will have nutritious ala carte choices available.

Good nutrition is popular with students in Cheshire Public Schools because nearly three out of four students attending school purchase a lunch or healthy ala carte entrée or snack. Cheshire Food and Nutrition Services en-courages parents to talk about making healthy choices with their children on a daily basis, whether they are in fi rst grade or a senior in high school. This one conver-sation can help to set up healthy eating habits that can last a life-time.

The 2012-2013 school bus routes for the Cheshire Public Schools and for the Cheshire stu-dents attending Wilcox Techni-cal School, Sound School and St. Bridget’s School, and Board of Education Transportation Policy 3541 are available on the website of the Cheshire Public Schools www.cheshire.k12.ct.us/transpor-tation and are summarized below:

Parents and students are asked to review the information on the postcards, which were be-ing mailed this week in prepara-tion for the fi rst day of school on Monday, Aug. 27.

1. All times listed on the bus information postcards are tenta-tive. Students should be at the appropriate stops approximately 10 minutes before the time listed since times may be adjusted dur-ing the fi rst few weeks of school.

2. The Cheshire Public School bus schedules for the 2012-2013 school years have been estab-lished according to the enroll-ment information available as of August 3, 2012. The bus sched-ules are subject to revision due to enrollment changes such as transfers, address changes, or ad-ditional registrations.

3. Per the transportation policy of the Cheshire Board of Educa-tion, students are to walk up to one-half mile for kindergarten, up to one mile for grades one through six, up to one and one-half miles for grades seven through 12. “Walking distance” means the linear measure from a point at the curb or edge of a public road at the student’s residence to a point at the nearest school building entrance; to a point at the near-

est, safe entrance to the school grounds located within 100 feet of the school building entrance; to the bus pick-up/drop off area; or to the bus stop, if applicable.

4. All written requests for changes in the school bus routes and/or stops must be made using the form “Petition Requesting School Transportation Accommo-dations.” This form is available on the website of the Cheshire Public Schools www.cheshire.k12.ct.us/transportation. Send the completed form to: Supervisor of Fiscal/Transportation Services, Cheshire Public Schools, 29 Main Street, Cheshire, CT 06410 or fax to (203) 272-6880. Please be sure the Petition includes the student’s name, grade, address, bus num-ber, school, and state clearly the problem that you wish corrected.

The Cheshire Public School System appreciates your patience while they address the large num-ber of requests for changes that are received at the beginning of the school year. Board of Education Policy 3541 states, “Bus routes shall be established to provide the safest and shortest routes as economically as possible.” Based on this combination, transporta-tion requests are addressed with highest priority being the safety of students, followed by routing changes caused by road construc-tion, assigning bus stops for new students, reducing the routes that take longer than 50 minutes after the fi rst two weeks of school, and inputting these changes into the computer system.

5. All written requests for transportation to and/or from a location other than your home

bus stop (for daycare, student’s workplace, community program, or due to unique and individual hardship) must be made using the form “Petition Requesting the Use of Available Seats and/or Alternate Stop on School Bus-es.” This form is available on the website of the Cheshire Public Schools www.cheshire.k12.ct.us/transportation. Due to the issues that must be addressed at the start of the school year, forms received after Aug. 15, will not be pro-cessed until Sept. 14.

Send the completed forms to: Supervisor of Fiscal/Trans-portation Services, Cheshire Public Schools, 29 Main Street, Cheshire, CT 06410 or fax to (203) 272-6880.

6. In addition, parents are asked to pay close attention to the fol-lowing policy of the Board of Ed-ucation: “Parents are responsible for the actions and safety of their children walking to and from bus stops and to and from school.” Please note that when kindergar-ten students require bus transpor-tation, parents should take them to the bus stop and wait with them, and later in the day, parents should wait at the bus stop to re-ceive the students.

7. Wilcox Technical School and Sound School Students residing in a busing district for Cheshire High School will take the regular Cheshire High School bus sched-uled for their area in the morning. At Cheshire High School, they will transfer to the Wilcox Bus or the Sound School Bus. Students residing within walking guide-lines for Cheshire High School will walk to the high school in the

morning. From the high school they will take the Wilcox Bus to Wilcox or the Sound School Bus to the Sound School. Wilcox Tech and Sound School students will be bused from Wilcox and the Sound School in the afternoon ac-cording to an assigned afternoon bus stop.

8. When Cheshire Schools are closed for the day due to inclem-ent weather, the Wilcox Tech and Sound School buses will not take

students to Wilcox Technical School or the Sound School even if either school opens that day.

Regarding all schools, in the event a delay or cancellation is not called, parents are encouraged to keep children home if they deem local neighborhood condi-tions unsafe for travel to schools.

9. For information, call (203) 272-2472. If no answer, call (203) 250-2400. For lost articles left on a bus, call (203) 699-8877.

A note from Dodd Middle School Interim Principal Donald Wailonis

Dodd Middle School is pleased to welcome our new students and we are also looking forward to seeing the returning eighth grad-ers. There will be many changes this year, most notably Dodd's principal, Jeff Solan, was named principal at Cheshire High School and the district will seek to fi nd the best replacement possible. In the meantime, Dodd's former principal Don Wailonis will serve as interim principal until a re-placement is found.

Upon their return to school, stu-dents can look forward to newly refurbished and enlarged locker room facilities that look great and meet today's safety standards.

This summer the administration and teaching staff also prepared improvements to reporting stu-dent progress to parents. In addi-tion to traditional grade reporting, the report card will now refl ect progress in other important areas of student performance. This will be fully explained to students and parents this fall.

We look forward to seeing our students, staff, and parents when school begins.

A note from Highland School Principal Beverly Scully

Highland’s Staff is eager to begin another school year. We have been busy preparing for the students’ return, writing and revising curricu-lum, readying instructional materials in the classroom, and polishing and cleaning the building.

On Tuesday, Aug. 21, at 9:30 a.m., families new to Highland in grades 2-6 are invited to an orientation. Please join us to learn about curriculum, hear about our procedures, and get a tour of the school.

You will notice some new faces at Highland this year. Please join us in welcoming the following new members of the Highland Com-munity: Assistant Principal Marlene Silano; Principal’s Secretary Pat Gillis; Physical Education Teacher Andrew Steinway; Grade 3 Teacher Patrick Long; and Special Education Teacher Marilu Rochefort. We are all looking forward to an exciting and rewarding school year.

See you on Aug. 27 for our fi rst day of school.

Students eligible for trans-portation registered as of August 9, 2012, will receive a postcard indi-cating their bus number and/or let-ter, stop location, and approximate pickup time. Parents and students are asked to review these postcards which will be mailed this week.

Parents and guardians are respon-sible for their children to, from, and at the bus stop. Students should be at their bus stop (not inside the home) up to 10 minutes before the approxi-mate pickup time indicated on their postcard.

Kindergarten parents (or desig-nated person) must be at the bus stop to receive their homebound students.

Bus route information and the 2012-2013 bus routes are available on the website of the Cheshire Pub-lic Schools (www.cheshire.k12.ct.us/transportation). Bus routes and num-bers are subject to change, and pick-up times are approximate and will be adjusted as needed.

Day Care – Due to the issues that must be addressed at the start of the school year, “Petitions Requesting the Use of Available Seats and/or Al-ternate Stop on School Buses” form (available on the website) received after Aug 15, will not be processed until Sept. 14.
