Since my last report we have all celebrated Christmas, and I hope had, a few weeks off. Now, all Clubs are ‘back at work’ and already achieving great things for Lions this year. I must hank those Clubs who entered the Worldwide Lions Environmental Photo Competition. Our District’s winning entry this year was submitted by a Mt. Gambier Lion. Unfortunately for our District, the Australian winning entry was submitted by a Lion from Western Australia. The winning Australian photo will be posted to America and will be amongst those open for judging at the World Convention in Hawaii. If you didn’t know of such a competition, full details can be found on the web. A number of entries were also received from primary school children, for the Peace Poster Competition. Our winner this year also comes from Mt. Gambier. Well done Anna. Children have wonderful imaginations, and have the ability to express them through their art. Anna’s was very thought provoking. It is now time to order Peace Poster information packs and approach your local primary schools. Children love to enter competitions and many teachers are very happy to include the Peace Poster Competition in their curriculum. Last December Kath and I enjoyed a Christmas dinner with the Hahndorf Club where I inducted four new members. This is one Club where good leadership, good programmes and members having lots of fun, attracts new members. Well done Hahndorf. We have also visited the Port Macdonnell, Kalangadoo and Berri Clubs, and a combined meeting of the two Kangaroo Island Clubs. Every Club is very different, but all are doing great things for their own communities and Lions Worldwide. I will particularly make mention of the Berri Club, where I inducted three new members, taking their numbers to 33. President Terry chaired an extremely well run meeting, with all members enjoying a time of fun and fellowship afterwards. As PDG Bob Radford said in an excellent address to the Cabinet meeting two weeks ago, “A well run Club will attract and retain members”. The Berri Club is an excellent example of this. It is usual for Clubs to drop off members during December, and also June each year. As at the end of January our District is only down by two members, but with a number of inductions already in February, I am sure our numbers will have increased. The drop off in other Districts Australiawide, is a major concern. Australia wide we now only have 26,936 members. What is significant about this drop is that at a Multi District Convention in 2009, it was decided to remove the family membership allowance if our numbers dropped below 27,000. This is a challenge to all members to ask their friends to join our great organisation. Remember it does no harm just to ask. Try and do this at least once a week. I am doing this. In 2017 our organisation will celebrate its centenary. International President Joe Preston is inviting you, and your Club to be part of this special moment in our history by supporting a new Global Service Initiative to celebrate our centennial year. The Centennial Service Challenge encourages Lions around the world to serve 100 million people by December 2017. Every Club can play a part in reaching our goal. Here’s how you can join the Centennial Service Challenge; Host Service Projects throughout the year that impact youth; Report your service activities through the service Activity Report on My LCI; Earn a Centennial Banner Patch with a progressive gemstone design for each year; Learn more about the Centennial Service Challenge online and share it with your Club today. Already our C Districts have appointed a Committee to plan for this centennial year. It is meeting on a regular basis, and in particular to attempt to work with the Clipsal 500 Incorporating Clubs in South Australia, the Northern Territory, New South Wales & Victoria Web – 201c2.lions.org.au BACK TO BASICS DECEMBER 2014-JANUARY 2015 DISTRICT GOVERNOR Ron Sargent (Kath) PO Box 2200 Goolwa SA 5214 (H) (08) 8555 1139 (M) 0407 688 351 Email: Ron Sargent (Goolwa Inc) IMMEDIATE PAST DISTRICT GOVERNOR Rhys Roberts (Helen Henbest) 4 Edgecumbe Pde Blackwood SA 5051 (H) (08) 8278 1073 (M) 0413 454 262 Email: Rhys Roberts (Blackwood Inc) 1st VICE DISTRICT GOVERNOR David Thomas (Margie) PO Box 336 Robe SA 5276 (M) 0407 254 710 Email: David Thomas (Robe Inc) 2nd VICE DISTRICT GOVERNOR Bryan Hearn (Kay) 6 Leonard Court McLaren Vale SA 5171 (H) (08) 8323 7924 (M) 0410 539 274 Email: Bryan Hearn (McLaren Districts Inc) CABINET SECRETARY Ross Parkinson (Sue) PO Box 2598 Mt Gambier SA 5290 (H) (08) 8725 1019 (M) 0400 107 571 Email: Ross Parkinson (Mt Gambier Inc) CABINET TREASURER Frank Simpson (Annie) 14 Brighton Road Glenelg SA 5045 (H) (08) 8376 3650 (F) (08) 8295 8386 (M) 0400 851 400 Email: Frank Simpson (Brighton Inc) CONSTITUTION & BY-LAWS CHAIRMAN (Assistant Cabinet Secretary) Cheryle Pedler (Dr Scott) PO Box 991 Berri SA 5343 (M) 0438 500 316 Email: Cheryle Pedler (Berri Inc)

Murray Bridge On Wednesday December 10th, the bi-monthly meeting held at Johnson Park was preceded by a BBQ, salads, followed with desserts, all provided by the members. This was a particularly special occasion, as the club, later, inducted a total of four new members. To witness the induction ceremony, ably conducted by President Lion Hylton Motritz, were family representatives, friends, the inductees’ sponsoring members and the remaining members

present. The inducted members were Roger Waldhuter, Robin Raghuveeran, Terry Fisher ad Lew Webb. The respective sponsors, Lions Ann Hughes, Barry Stanbury, John Filmer and Hylton Moritz then pinned on the new Lions badges. Lion Terry Critchley presented each with the new member’s pack. Each sponsor then introduced the new members to the

current members. During the preceding weeks, prior to the induction, the new members assisted several times at various club activities as well as attending several meetings. Their contribution was timely and so appreciated to share the load when there were a number of activities being run at the same time. Each month the club has had excellent local speakers at it Dinner meeting. The most recent was Jill Holme who shared her trip along the Canning Highway in Western Australia. Her power point presentation certainly showed remoteness at it’s best. Christmas has come and gone but the members continued to serve in various ways. Christmas cake sales went well and, again, a generous donation was made to the Meals of Wheels group. The Christmas raffle was well supported by the community in the Market Place Mall. Lion Barry Stanbury took on the job as Raffle manager and engaged local identity, Brian Eaves to draw the Raffle. New member Terry Fisher and Ian Hollick ran a BBQ lunch at the local pool on behalf of Family SA which supplied the food. Many children enjoyed lunch and even better was the arrival of Father Christmas in the local MFS fire truck. He later distributed gifts to all the children before this prize shot was taken.

Victor Harbor & Port Elliot At the recent December Business meeting toiletry care packs were presented to the club from Edwardstown member Judy Glastonbury.Judy spoke about the project and the need for assisting the homeless with basic toiletry items. The club had asked members to bring along items and over 1000 assorted products were given to the Sleeping Rough project. The packs will be donated to the Salvation Army in Victor Harbor. Pictured receiving the packs are Geoff Pfeiffer,Ivan Dohnt,Greg Davis and Leigh Blacket

McLAREN DISTRICTS We would like to extend our best wishes to all, particularly to those who have supported us throughout this year by attending our monthly schnitzel Nights, various bbq’s held locally, the craft market, and our book shop. Special thanks to various businesses who have been prepared to sell our Lions Mints and Christmas Cakes and Puddings. Their assistance is greatly appreciated as the funds generated are the backbone of our fundraising efforts. Our Christmas raffle was also a success and the happy winners have been notified accordingly. Our members enjoyed a wonderful dinner to celebrate the season at Middlebrook Winery. Special thanks to Lions Jill Bagshaw and Wendy Datson for their organisational efforts and the terrific staff at Middlebrook. This was the second year at this venue, and it did not disappoint. Our members will enjoy a short break and be back in the saddle again in mid-January. The first event on our calendar in 2015 is the Tour Down Under when the stage to Willunga takes place. This is always a fun day for everyone. Our first schnitzel night will be held on Friday 27th February 2015. Take care everyone, drive safely, enjoy time with your families and catch up with us in the New Year.

This is a task essential to the good welfare of the Clubs and can be a satisfying task. If sufficient numbers are available I will carry out a mini (local) faculty institute where presentation skills and train the trainer workshops will be carried out. It is hoped to run this faculty in early/mid-April 2015. I would like to see facilitators available for the coming Lions year (2015/16) to enable more opportunities for Leadership workshops, Zonie forums etc. Any questions about these positions please contact the author in the first instance.

ACSO and Stonie Awards Now the dust has settled on the 2014 ACSO Premier's Awards it is now time to concentrate on 2015. As far as the ACSO Awards are concerned it has been suggested that they should be held in April (Probably not next year). The reasoning is that the calendar is too congested around October and it could align with other Volunteer awards. It is now time to look to the Stonie Award, note singular - only one award will be made this Lions year. Conditions of entry etc will appear early next year.

Public Relations It cannot be emphasized too often that you (each member) are the face of Lions and if you 'ask one' you will be surprised how many will answer in the affirmative. The Marketing team asked several 'ones' at Mount Compass with the result that we are forming a new Lion's Club there in the near Future. Harry Tillyer PR Chair.

International News From the President

Dear Lion,

A ne w year brings new challenges, new rewards, and new opportunities. We h ave a lot to build on this year thanks to you. Lions are using new tools to keep their clubs strong, and adding new members because Lions have embraced the Ask 1 campaign.

But there is a significant challenge we need to address: the number of members that are leaving clubs. Inviting new members and keeping existing members is the key to strengthening your club. That's why we introduced our Keep 1 initiative.

Keep 1 is a simple concept that reinforces the importance of keeping each one of your members actively involved. Every Lion can play a key role in supporting new members and engaging existing members in your club.

It is important to value your members, to encourage them, mentor them, and more. There is an old saying, "People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." If we are to reach our full potential, we have to do a better job of keeping our members engaged and happy to serve as Lions. And together, WE CAN!

Joe Preston Your International President

LCIF

Dear Lions, I recently returned from the Philippines, where I witnessed joy from those we are serving. I met with villagers in Tacloban and visited their new homes. I also saw smiles in the eyes of children, as they are nourished through a Lions feeding program.

As many of you celebrate the holidays and prepare for the new year, I ask that you keep these images in your heart. But I also ask you to think of the children we have not yet reached and who are still hungry.

With your donations, Lions and LCIF will continue to fight blindness, support youth, provide disaster relief and meet humanitarian needs all around the world. We are addressing global health issues, such as measles, diabetes and Ebola. We are reducing poverty through microenterprise. We are addressing needs of people everywhere. We are changing lives and providing hope to millions.

Thank you for proving that where there is a need, there is a Lion.

Sincerely,

Barry J. Palmer Chairperson, Lions Clubs International Foundation

LCIF Rated a 4-Star Charity

LCIF has recently earned its third consecutive 4-star rating from Charity Navigatorfor its effective fiscal management and its commitment to accountability and transparency. Charity Navigator examines the financial health, accountability and transparency of charities to determine its ratings. LCIF's 4-star rating indicates that it consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way. Only 12 percent of the charities evaluated earned a third consecutive 4-star rating. This exceptional distinction means that LCIF outperforms most other charitable organizations in the United States. You can be confident your donations are being used in support of the programs for which theyare intended.

Donating to LCIF

Did you know that one-hundred percent of every dollar donated to LCIF goes to someone in need? LCIF receives no funding from club dues, and all administrative costs are paid through interest earned on investments. LCIF relies solely on donations from our partners and Lions like you for the grants we award. Approved grants have exceeded our grant budget for several years, which means that your unrestricted donations are more important than ever before. When you make your donation to LCIF, please consider selecting "Area of Greatest Need." This unrestricted donation gives LCIF the flexibility to support initiatives where the need is most urgent.
