Dear colleagues and friends of MINDS,On behalf of the Dutch press agency

ANP, I welcome you to the World Trade Center Den Haag. As a founding partner, we are honoured to host the 25th MINDS Conference. It will be the second time a MINDS Conference will be held in the Netherlands, although the first time was in 2006, one year before the official foundation of MINDS. ANP was asked to host MINDS earlier, but due to the perfect storm around us we were not sure if we would be in a position to host such an event.

In 2017, we found enough confidence again to look at the future and move our headquarters to the World Trade Center in the city where it all started. It also gave us the confidence to host a MINDS Conference after so many years of decline.

Very recently we received additional exciting news. Talpa, a large Dutch media company, has become our new shareholder. Talpa is committed to investing in ANP. It goes without saying that ANP will remain an independent press agency serving the full media community.

Den Haag (internationally better known as The Hague or La Haye) is not the official capital of the Netherlands but it fulfills all the functions of a true capital; the government, the residence of the royal family and virtually all countries of the world are represented in Den Haag through their embassies. International institutions such as the International Court of Justice and the

International Criminal Court provide Den Haag the name of City of Peace and Justice.

In terms of peace, I am fully confident MINDS will again be a peaceful exchange of thoughts and ideas. As a newcomer to MINDS, I was impressed by the conference in Rome last October. Press agencies share the same goals, responsibilities and challenges, but we are often not competing against each other. This makes a generous and frank exchange possible and mutually attractive. As a direct result of Rome, for example, we initiated several conversations with other agencies about co-operation in business, editorial and technical areas.

In the field of justice, press agencies have more challenges. We are experiencing increasing pressure to justify our existence among our main customers – the media companies. This is a direct consequence of the changing media business model in which advertising budgets are to a very large extent absorbed by giants such as Google and Facebook. And these platforms publish news – our news or derivatives – without

financial compensation. How are we going to collect our intellectual property rights in a climate where consumers experience news as a free good, and even the hardest facts are presented by some as nothing more than an opinion? It is our common challenge to make it clear to the world that fact-checked news is of great importance for every society.

United in MINDS we can also contribute to this through technology. At ANP, we develop usage reports in which the use of text, image and video is monitored and analyzed. We use technology to trace and settle for unpaid use. We develop technology to better prove our added value to our customers. And we develop new services for both media and business markets.

In this spring week in April, with so many MINDS colleagues attending, let’s make The Hague the international city of media justice and media technology. Let’s enjoy, share and succeed.

Het Algemeen Nederlands Persbureau (ANP) was founded 11 December 1934 by the Dutch national newspapers. They saw the necessity of a joint press agency to supply newspapers, radio and television with news. Our shareholders have changed since then, but the stakeholders didn’t. Speed, Independence

and Reliability are still our key standards. ANP has adapted its production and processes to the latest technological developments. ANP has also built a worldwide network and collaborates with various international leading press agencies, software and content partners.

Permission MachinePermission Machine combines a powerful search technology with a vast legal expertise. Its tracking software scours the internet for websites using images of its clients, and it efficiently conveys the results of this search to the photo agencies by means of its proprietary system. When illegal usage of photographs is identified, PM’s legal team initiates the procedure to obtain a suitable compensation in an ethical fashion. Within the MINDS network Permission Machine is already working with ANP and Belga. permissionmachine.com

PDCPDC is partner of ANP. Its primary focus is to collect, archive and make available via advanced database techniques data on legislative processes in the Netherlands and the European Union. Online services such as the Parliamentary Monitor and the EU Monitor enable clients to keep track of upcoming legislation in an easy, timely and structured way.

In addition, PDC maintains data on various parliamentary activities from the composition of parliamentary committees to elections and the Dutch process of cabinet formation. The data also includes a unique collection of political biographies from 1796 to the present day. pdc.nl

The Friday session will introduce another new format at MINDS. It has been prepared in cooperation with two MINDS partners, the Dutch Incubator Media Matters and the next media accelerator from Germany.

Eight startups from five countries will

present short pitches about their service, followed by one-on-one talks between startups and MINDS member agencies. With a total of 56 slots, each agency will have the opportunity to talk to 2-3 startups for 10 minutes before moving on to the next one.

After gaining more insight into the service and technology of the participating startups, the objective of the meeting is to establish if there is a basis for cooperation. This can range from a pilot with the technology or services of the startup to a reseller agreement.

Places and activities

1. Pavilion de WittePellenaerstraat 4, 2586 EK Den Haagpaviljoendewitte.nl/#topThe Pavilion de Witte was built in 1827 by King William I as a birthday present for his wife. Because of her health she had to stay a lot by the sea and drew and painted there. The pavilion was built after a neo-classicist design in the form of a cross with two river gods at the entrance. Throughout the centuries the ownership has changed many times and since 1918 it has belonged to the De Witte Society whose members use it in the summer months. These days it is also used as a party and event center. On Thursday, 19 April 2018, ANP will invite the MINDS group for dinner at Pavilion de Witte.

Museums

1. Beelden aan ZeeHarteveltstraat 1, 2586 EL Den Haagbeeldenaanzee.nl/enJust around the corner from Pavilion de Witte is the museum Beelden aan Zee (Sculptures by the sea), which was founded by the collectors Theo and Lida Scholten. Since its foundation in 1994, it is the only Dutch museum which specializes in exhibiting sculptures. A special feature is that the museum cannot be seen from the nearby beach and promenade by order of the municipality of The Hague and is therefore built entirely underground. As a result, the roof of the museum offers a view over the sea, but not the beach or the promenade. On Thursday, 19 April 2018, the MINDS group will have an aperitif at Museum Beelden aan Zee.

2. MauritshuisPlein 29, 2511 CS Den Haag+31 70 302 3456mauritshuis.nl/enThe Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis, located at a unique 17th-century palace in The Hague, has the highest number of masterpieces per square meter in the Netherlands. 3. GemeentemuseumStadhouderslaan 41, 2517 HV Den Haaggemeentemuseum.nl/en The Hague Gemeentemuseum, designed by Dutch architect Hendrik Berlage is a milestone in contemporary architecture. The museum is especially known for Mondriaan’s work. This collection includes his early, realistic pieces as well as the piece de resistance, Victory Boogie Woogie. Outstanding features in the collection are the great number of the Hague School paintings and a marvellous series of works by Mondriaan, Picasso, Monet, Cezanne and Kandinsky.

It’s with very good reason that the Hop & Stork was hailed among the top three coffee shops in the Netherlands by the Algemeen Dagblad in 2015.

2. HofkwartierMolenstraat 33-A, 2513 BJ Den HaagThe Hague is the perfect city for shopping in style. Beautiful streets with old bricks and gables capture the imagination and revive bygone times. Although this luxury shopping street is also home to the working palace of King William Alexander, inhabitants of The

Hague are familiar with chic Noordeinde shopping area primarily because of its characteristic fashion boutiques, galleries, antique and art stores. If you see a large car with an AA registration plate it means that Queen Maximá or her family are doing their ‘own’ shopping.

Nature & evironment

1. Scheveningen beach & boulevarddenhaag.com/en/scheveningenThe new Scheveningen boulevard south of the Kurhaus hotel was designed by Spanish architect and urban designer Manuel de Solà-Morales. The starting point for his design is the wide promenade between the resort, the

fishing village and the harbour. The differences in height, beautiful materials, colours, street furniture and the position of the beach pavilions in compact clusters have transformed the boulevard into an attractive promenade.

2. The Hague ForestHaagse Bos literally means The Hague’s forest. Haagse Bos is the green gateway to The Hague. The forest consists of an extensive and centuries-old green landscape and is inextricably linked with the rich history of The Hague. Haagse Bos makes an essential contribution to the green character of the city. The area is approximately 100 hectares in size and runs from Malieveld to the municipality of Wassenaar.

3. Meijendel: dune areaMeijendel is the largest interconnected dune area in South Holland. The beautiful nature reserve extends between Scheveningen, The Hague and Wassenaar, and consists primarily of open dune landscape, lakes, forests and kilometers of long sandy beaches. In the center of the nature reserve is a visitor center owned by drinking water company Dunea, Meyendel pancake house and Monkeybos playground. Various types of trees and over 250 species of birds can be found here.
