With the return of 12 letterwinners, including eight starters, the 2006 Rider University women’s soccer team looks to

return to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championshiptournament for the sixth consecutive season and reach the MAACtitle game for the third time.

“We have a nice streak going, making post-season every year, andthat is one of our main goals, to keep that going,” said head coachKevin Long, the sport’s winningest coach ever at Rider with 26 vic-tories. “Last year we were very young without much experience. Thisyear we are still young, with just two seniors, but we are much moreexperienced and we brought in players who will make us stronger atboth ends of the field.”

The Broncs will be led by the two seniors, Kelli Burke and LaurenTerzyk, who have been teammates since they were in grade school andhave both received honors from the MAAC during their collegiatecareers. “KB and LT know this is the end of a long career togetherand they both want to finish on a high note,” said Long. “Kelli hasall the tools to be a dangerous player and will be hard to defend thisseason, her final year.” Burke earned second team All-MAAC honorsin 2004. “LT had some injuries last year that kept her off the fieldmore than we would have liked,” Long said. “She’s a leader in theback and can read the game very well.” Terzyk was a member of theMAAC All-Rookie team in 2003.

Other key returnees include goalkeeper Kim Carter, forwardsSteph Madden and Kayla Devlin, backs Shana Herman and ErinMahar, and midfielders Michele Ripoll, Lauren Mahar, AmandaScully, Michelle Matricardi and Amy Vinarsky.

Carter was fifth in the MAAC in saves and seventh in shutouts lastseason and is a veteran of 40 games in the Rider nets. “With the inex-perience we had on the back line last year, Kim had a tough season,”Long said. “This year we’ve shored things up back there so Kimshould return to her freshman year form and again be recognized asone of the top keepers in the MAAC.” Carter was twice named theMAAC Rookie of the Week and once the MAAC Defensive Player ofthe Week in 2004.

Madden led the Broncs in goals and points last season and has 39games under her belt. “Steph had a very good sophomore season,”said Long. “We’re looking for her to be even more dangerous thisyear. She’s tenacious and we hope to get her on the field even morethis fall.”

Devlin played in all 20 games as a rookie last season, starting 11,and was tied for second on the team in goals. “Kayla had a break-through spring for us,” Long said. “She showed everyone why webrought her here. She really took over and can light it up. Her finalpass is outstanding and I think she will be a dangerous player thisfall.”

Herman has started all 41 games in her Bronc career, earningMAAC All-Rookie team honors in 2004, and was named to theJewish All-American team. “Shana suffered a knee injury at the endof her freshman season and was not quite 100 percent last year.Although she played well in the back for us, now she is fully healthy,”said Long. “I’m looking forward to seeing her at full strength again.

She is becoming a good leader and we expect her to come through forus. She has been one of our stronger players in the back for two yearsand we don’t expect that to change.”

Twin sisters Erin and Lauren Mahar combined to start 19 gameslast season. “Erin played in a lot of games in the back for us last sea-son and in the spring we saw a lot of her in the middle,” Long said.“She has good pace, is tenacious, and can deliver a great ball. Weexpect her to be right in the thick of things this season. Lauren alsohad a great spring and is becoming more of a dangerous player,” Longsaid. “She’s very quick and she never quits. It is hard to battle herpace. She forces the issue.”

Ripoll played in 17 games as a rookie and started the first game oflast season before a knee injury ended her season. “Rip is 100 per-cent healthy and we’re counting on her to anchor the back line,” saidLong. “She’s strong and gives us a physical presence in the back. She’sa good, solid contributor who shrinks the field. She can strike the ball60 yards, but also has a fine touch.”

Scully was second on the team in scoring last year despite startingjust six games. “Scully had a good spring,” Long said. “She’s one ofthe more crafty players with a great shot on goal. We’ll try to findsome place on the field where she can take advantage of that shot.”

Matricardi played in 17 games last season as a rookie. “Michellewill be on the flank or on top for us this fall,” Long said. “She hasworked extremely hard in the off season. She has quick feet and agood pace. She is one of our more technical players.”

Vinarsky has seen action in 25 games for Rider, starting 13. “Amysaw a lot of time in the back last year and we expect to continue tosee positive things from her,” said Long. “We know we can rely onher for strong play in the back. Her hard tackles set her apart.”

The newcomers include Alison Brody, Meghan Brett, KateMurphy, Tara Morris, Stacey Belgiovene, Natalie Sica, and LeslieAmster.

Brody served as team captain at West Potomac High School andreceived All-District honors. “Alison brings craftiness to the team,”said Long. “She has great vision and could slice through defenderswith the ball. I see her on the flank somewhere, although she doeshave midfield abilities.”

Brett was a First Team All-CVC selection at nearby NottinghamHigh School where she was a distinguished scholar. “Meghan is alocal player who is very gifted, both academically and athletically,”said Long. “I see her playing in the back for us. She has a great stepto the ball, she’s quick, and aggressive.”

Murphy was a two-year captain for the perennial PIAA powerCouncil Rock South. “Kate has a tremendous presence on the field,”said Long. “She’s quick and strong and has good distribution skills. She is very versatile and just a solid, all-around player.”

Morris comes to Rider from St. Hubert’s in Philadelphia. “Tara isa Philly kid who will compete at center-mid or up front,” Long said.“She’s a goal scorer. She’s good on the ball, she’s quick, and she canfinish. She likes to take players on and is good at it.”

Belgiovene was an All-County selection at Toms River North andplayed for Match Fit, the North American Super Y Champion club

At Rider: Played in 17 games as a Rider rookie, starting five…scored an unassistedgoal from 10 yards out to send the Saint Peter’s game into overtime.

team. “Stacey is an extremely hard tackler who likes to go up in theair,” Long said. “She has a good chance to have some success in theback and will hold the center of the field for us.”

Sica was a teammate of Belgiovene on Match Fit and was a four-time team MVP at Holy Cross High School. “Nat is probably themost versatile player on the roster,” said Long. “She can literally playanywhere that we need her. She can defend well, has a great work rate, and she gives you everything she has.”

Amster was a top recruit out of Somerville High School in 2004and comes to Rider from Raritan Valley Community College. “Lesliebrings pace and is a good distributor,” Long said. “She has played for-ward and I see her somewhere on the left flank. She can deliver at alot of different spots for us.”

The season begins August 25 with a home game against Towsonand features non-conference games with UMBC, LIU, Penn,Delaware State, Drexel, St. Joseph’s, Monmouth and GeorgeWashington.

“The schedule has some new schools and the teams we will be play-ing will certainly prepare us well for the challenging MAAC sched-ule that we will face later in the season,” Long said. “In the MAAC,it is anyone’s game. Last year the eventual champion was not one ofthe top four teams in the regular season so that proves that all youhave to do is make the playoffs to have a shot at the title. Once youget into post-season play, anything can happen. We jelled at the endof last season. This year, if we can jell early, we’ll be in good shape. We have much more depth this year almost every spot is up in theair. We brought people in who can score and we brought in peoplewho can defend. We had a good spring and we’re looking to get offto a good start in the fall.”

And with a good start, a good finish in the MAAC playoffs shouldfollow.

At Somerville High School: NSCAA All-American in 2004…four-time team MVP…led her team to the StateCup Championship, Regional Championship and to the 2003 Snickers Nationals Championship…attended RaritanValley Community College last year.

Arete’

With the start of the 1990-91 academic school year, Rider Universityimplemented its innovative Arete’ Program for all student-athletes.Arete’ refers to the ancient Greek ideal of a balanced striving for excel-lence in all areas of life. The purpose of the program, which has beendetailed in The New York Times and The Times of Trenton, is to help stu-dent-athletes develop in all areas of their lives, not just on the playingfields or in the classroom. Subjects of the seminars include time man-agement, stress management, sports nutrition, substance abuse, com-munication skills, study skills, training techniques, HIV, etiquette/goodmanners, interview techniques, resume writing, and life after Rider.

Student Transitional Education Program (STEP)

Under the direction of the asso-ciate director of athletics, STEP provides individual and group tutor-ing, as well as study tables that are mandatory for certain student-ath-letes. STEP also coordinates progress reports, monitors the student-athletes academic progress, and provides workshops on topics such aslibrary skills, test taking and note taking. In 2003 Rider added its firstfull-time Academic Support Coordinator, Sonya Hurt.
