100% PASSING RATE BAA Class of 2011 By FRED ANGULO
Seventy-four UPCBA BS Business Administration and
Accountancy graduates became some of the latest
Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) of the country, after
successfully acing the October 2011 Professional Regulation
Commission CPA licensure examinations. With this new feat, the administration is definitely one with BAA Batch 2011 in celebrating, according to Prof. Manny Manuel III, UPCBA College Secretary. "We're very proud of this accomplishment! And to top it all, we are the only university with a 100% passing rate in the October 2011 exams! Galing talaga!” Following UP were the
University of Santo Tomas with an 88.86-percent passing rate,
and De La Salle University-Lipa and University of Saint Louis-
Tuguegarao, both registering 80-percent. The examinations
were divided into seven subjects--Management Services,
Business Law and Taxation, Theory of Accounts, Auditing
Theory, Auditing Problems, Practical Accounting 1, and
Practical Accounting 2.

What’s your BACBACAN Story? By ENGLEBERT CHUA
Ten days before the actual day of BACBACAN, batch spirits from different levels of CBA can already be felt when students simultaneously
changed their profile pictures to their respective batch‟s pride picture. People from other colleges and universities took notice of the buzz
BACBACAN has created. BACBACAN indeed is a phenomenon. And it is proudly TATAK BAC.
BACBACAN, held last August 6, 2011 at the Department of Agrarian Reform Covered Courts, is an annual sports event that promotes
camaraderie among members of the CBA community. Aside from this, it is also a celebration of excellence in sports, arts and of several
other homegrown talents here in CBA. BACBACAN is a testament to the competence of CBA students in these fields and not only in the
field of academics.
BACBACAN this year was attended by over 600 people, the
largest crowd yet. Attendees were composed of students,
alumni, relatives, faculty and many more! This year’s
BACBACAN was made historical not only by the huge
number of attendees, but also because of the celebration of
the first ever BACBACAN Week and the addition of a
beneficiary, the Holy Trinity Home for Children. This addition to
what the college has loved for years made the BACBACAN
ex p er ience m or e hol i s t ic and m eaningful .
Dubbed as The Kids of BACBACAN, the children from the Holy
Trinity Home for Children joined the CBA community during
BACBACAN and offered two song numbers for the crowd.
The audience sang with them during their performance and
played with them during the break. It was a heart-warming
scene to witness. Turn to page 5

WORDS OF A TOPNOTCHER By FRED ANGULO
With the many accolades that UPCBA has been receiving this year, every student is definitely
becoming more inspired to bring out the best in him– or herself. BAC2YOU spoke with proud CBA alumnus, and CPA Exams Top-notcher (#2) Carlos Yu Jr.,
about his journey in the recent months, where he’s headed and his advice to students who
aspire to become CPAs.
BAC2YOU: How was the experience—from going through the review process, to actually
taking the exams, to waiting for the results?
Review was like a condensed college experience. But unlike college, there was more of
serious studying than having fun. If you would also ask my batchmates, I guess we felt all
kinds of emotion during the review, and especially during the exams. Nandyan yung
We're grateful that we have our
friends and family to support us. Kasi kung wala, nakakabaliw talaga siya. Haha! And I guess
one of the best things during the last four months of our journey to becoming CPAs, is that we
have become closer to God. Sabi nga nung mga reviewers namin sa CPAR, magiging
madasalin ka talaga during the board exams! It's true! After the exams, while waiting for the
results, all that’s left for us to do was pray, and we're very thankful that our prayers were
heard.
BAC2YOU: What's keeping you busy these days? I’ve been spending all the time trying to do the things I couldn’t do during the review. After
all, tapos na talaga ang period of studying. I catch up with friends, watch movies, play
badminton, bowling, and just relax.
BAC2YOU: What are you looking forward to in the next few months? Have you decided on
the specific career path you want to pursue? I've decided to start working by the third week of November but so far, I haven't made up
my mind on which firm to join. I'm really weighing my options carefully and I'm thinking of
pursuing either public accounting in one of the big four accounting firms (Deloitte, Ernst &
Young, KPMG, PwC) or financial consulting in an internationally-recognized consulting firm.
BAC2YOU: Do you have any advice for students who want to become CPAs someday? To the future CPAs, it would be of great help if you would really take studying very seriously.
Honestly, my goal back in college was only to pass every exam. But I realized, during the
review, that my goal should have been to learn everything, so I would have something to
apply in my future career, as a professional.
Listen to what the professors have to say. Although it seems too much of a work load, reading
IAS from cover to cover, answering review books, among other
things, would ease up your life during the review.
Don’t complain about the difficulty of the exams. That's how you
will develop the critical-thinking skills you will need in the future.
That’s our advantage when compared to other schools. 'Yung
tipong kahit anong problem i-harap sa „yo, masasagutan mo
kasi you were trained the hard way, at hindi dahil kinabisado
mo lang yung formula or yung steps. I believe, ganyan naman
talaga ang accounting. Although there are already a lot of
standards dealing with every possible scenario, not everything is
covered. Don't take a hard exam as a burden; take it as a
challenge, or even a blessing in disguise, if you will. At the end
of the day, we will only learn from them.

BAC Welcomes Freshmen to CBA By: TRIXIE UY
This year, UPCBA welcomed 97 new members to its growing
family. Fresh from their high school graduation, the new UP
students were first introduced to the college and the BAC
through Imprint, the BAC 2012 Freshmen Orientation. And the
rest, as they say is history. BAC2YOU chatted with this year’s
Freshmen Batch Representatives and two of their batchmates
on their life in UP (and in UPCBA), so far.
BAC2YOU: How has freshie orientation helped jump start UP life?
During summer, we were exceedingly nervous to enter a new
and unfamiliar world - college. However, freshie orientation
gave us something to look forward to rather than something to
dread for. The BAC was very accommodating and
approachable. They even had this buddy system that allowed
us to ask any questions we had to our respective buddy council
member. They easily made us feel comfortable by introducing
the many orgs, and telling us about UP life in general. It was
hard not to feel excited, especially after the Amazing Race,
one of the most memorable activities of freshie orientation. It
was in the Amazing Race we, freshies, made friends. By
breaking the ice before school started, we all soon realized we
could easily fit in even if we all came from different
backgrounds. The freshie orientation sponsored by the BAC
made us realize that CBA is truly one of the best colleges to be
part of.
BAC2YOU: What batch gimmicks have you had and what are
you planning?
A few weeks after the start of school, we had T.G.I.F., our first
batch bonding in Trinoma, to celebrate (or forget about) the
first Math 17 exam. This was soon followed by a batch pizza
party, to chill and get to know each other more, as well as
study group sessions, for people with common subjects and
teachers. Every birthday, we make it a point as well, to textbrig
the entire batch to greet the celebrant and give that person a
special gift. However, this is just the start of our many many planned batch gimmicks. A few weeks from now, we will be having
Uniform Day, which will be followed by a batch food tripping, movie night, picnic in the sunken garden and among many
many other things. The biggest highlights of the year though will be the CBA Freshie night, (cough*PROM*cough), and the
batch Christmas caroling. It's an exciting year ahead!

BAC2YOU: How's UP and UPCBA life so far?
A 180 degree turn occurred in me since I stepped on thos BA Steps and started wondering if the
sculpture outside BA is a military instrument or a hair dryer. Ikot, toki, isaw, gc, prerof, and such, along
with other essentials of UP life, suddenly expanded and reformed my personality from a guy of timidity
to a future business leader- confident, competent, compassionate and ―makapal and mukha.‖ UPCBA
life unleashed unmatched potential in me and I just love it!
-Rhondel Guevara
I’m loving my college life so far because of CBA! The people have been nothing but friendly and
welcoming, and it really helped me be more comfortable in college. I’m looking forward to spending
the next few years with my batch and the rest of the CBA family.
-Mia Mendoza
BAC Thanks the Special Project Heads and Aux Corps by CHARMIAN MOLINA
The Special Project Heads and Aux Corps are more than just
volunteers - they are wonderful blessings to the BAC. It's not easy for 26
people to manage several projects and take care of hundreds of CBA
students, but with the SPHs and Aux alongside, we can and we will.
Thank you brothers and sisters, for you breathe life and soul into the
BAC. You make our family whole. <3
AuxCorp Experience
Charles Yu, BAC 2012 AuxHead Working as the Auxiliary Corps Head during BACBACAN was biggest challenge in my college life, and I'm only a freshman!
There was a point when the voice in my head just told me "what the hell have you gotten yourself into?" From making the
mechanics of the parlor games to rallying the Auxcorps to volunteer, it became apparent that AuxCorps wasn't going to be
a walk in the park, and all this stress served only as a foreshadowing for BACBACAN. Without any past BACBACANs to draw experience from, BACBACAN 2011 was very hectic for me. Half the time was spent
running back and forth to check up on the Auxcorps on duty, while the rest of the time was spent being a marshal at the
parlor games. It was a different feeling from simply being a spectator since I had to work while most of my batchmates were
enjoying themselves. At one point I felt as if I've bitten off more than I could chew as the Auxcorps faltered slightly in
facilitating the parlor games. There were many holes in the mechanics which made it harder to act as marshals the games,
but I felt better when the council came to help us out. At the end of the day, I could have done more, but I'm content with
what little I was able to contribute to BACBACAN. I stumble, I make mistakes, and I'm human, but that won't stop me from doing better. The next Council events better watch
out, because Auxcorps are going to have them covered. Danica Manalastas, BAC 2012 Aux Logistics Head Being part of Aux Corps in BACBACAN made me feel part of something much bigger than myself. It was more than just
volunteer duty; it meant working as a team in ensuring that all goes well from start to finish. The greatest
fulfillment was seeing people’s happy faces and genuine smiles, which could only mean they enjoyed
the event that we helped make possible. If I were to do it over again, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Go Aux! Aj Lamorena, Freshmen Initiative Special Project Head Applying to be an SPH of BAC’s Freshmen Initiative is definitely one of the best decisions I have made.
Being part of the Freshie Team, I was able to work with people who I learned a lot from and was given
the opportunity to do things I never thought I could. It was challenging, yes, but seeing the Freshies
now makes everything worth it. Placing 2nd in Futsal in BACBACAN 1, stepping-up for various positions in
the orgs they are applying for, actively participating in AuxCorps and going through their Freshie year
as one strong batch, they are certainly starting to leave their own mark in CBA. All of these make us
from the Freshie Team very proud and we’re pretty sure we’ll be seeing more from them soon.

BAC holds TalkBAck: The CBA Dialogue By: KIM CAELIAN
Misunderstanding is a basic human endeavor that is normal and expected in any
organization. With a big organization however, like the College of Business
Administration, it can multiply to irrational and illogical proportions. Once every year, the Business Administration Council holds the College Assembly;
this event is held to provide a venue where students and faculty can come together
and discuss issues that may have arisen during the semester. This year, aptly entitled
TalkBAck: The CBA Dialogue, the event further emphasized the healthy and two-
way communication expected for the college, ultimately fostering an environment of care and cooperation. The event started by delineating three basic categories of issues that the students wished to discuss after based on surveys
and interviews. The categories were: Curriculum and Academic (which focused on scholastic concerns), Faculty (which
focused specifically on professors) and finally, Student Issues (which centered on Facility concerns). After each question, 5
minutes were ideally allotted for an open forum regarding the said concerns. Communication between the students and the administration does not end at that point, nonetheless. In the following
weeks, statements about the issues will be released online, and possibly published on our very own newsletter. Additional
questions that may not have been included will also be addressed in the online release. After all, it is of utmost priority to the
BAC to stay alert, and to provide effective avenues for growth realized by efforts from all parties concerned.
BA-based orgs celebrate ExeCoun Week
By: CJ DE LOS SANTOS
CBA celebrated its ExeCoun Week last June 21-24 with the main objectives of: 1) uniting all the BA-based orgs and 2)
establishing a stronger ExeCoun presence and image. The week effectively wrapped the Recruitment and Reaffirmation
Period of all the CBA-based orgs with its centralizing theme of, ―Proud CBA-ers!‖ ExeCoun Week also featured a lot of
successful events like the ExeCoun Week and Cleanliness Campaign Launch, the ExeCoun Games, and of course the
much-awaited Grand Pakain. The entire CBA laughed and had fun during the ExeCoun Games held in the 3 rd floor front
lobby as various members from the different CBA-based orgs participated in exciting and entertaining games like musical
chairs and eating contests. CBA-ers also had their stomachs full with free food ranging from pasta, to pizza, and even
donuts and siomai thanks to ExeCoun’s Grand Pakain (which lived up to its name as it served food to about 400 students).
Overall, the joint effort of the all the Org Heads and officers brought about the success of the ExeCoun Week. Such a
celebration proves that no other college can boast unity amongst its constituents like the CBA. Truly, we are proud to be
CBA-ers!
What’s your BACBACAN Story? From Page 1
My last BACBACAN couldn’t have been more meaningful than this. Being one of the heads of the biggest tradition of CBA
brought a great deal of pressure. It was really not an easy project to put together, especially with those high expectations
from the students. But we made it through.
It all started with a vision. We wanted BACBACAN this year to be the biggest. We wanted to add something that has not
been done before. This paved the way to the addition of a new dimension to BACBACAN. From marketing, to publicity, to
logistics, we made sure that everything is as perfect as it could be. We marketed our butts off just to get sponsors. We
braved the rain just to get the perfect shot for the teaser videos. We argued our way just to get a venue. In the end, it was
all worth it. A great vision armed with perseverance—this made BACBACAN 2011 successful. After all the chants have been cheered, all the tears have been cried, what remain in the hearts of every member of the
CBA community are the memories shared during the whole BACBACAN experience. It is not about the results. It is about
the story. In behalf of BAC and Aux Corps, we would like to thank everyone who participated and enjoyed BACBACAN
with us. We had written another chapter in our UP CBA life. This is our BACBACAN story.

my story
Compiled By: TRIXIE UY and BENJIE BALADAD
―As freshies, nobody expected anything big from us. BACBACAN
day came and everyone was surprised at how our batch was so
competitive in all the events. From Mr. and Ms. Bacbacan,
basketball, volleyball, cheerdance, and futsal, it was seen how
united our batch was and how excited we were to do our best. It is
amazing that in just one day, we were not only able to showcase
our talents but also gained so much in terms of experience and
friends. This year, though we may not have won, we stood strong
and laid out the foundation of ou legacy. THIS IS JUST THE START OF
OUR STORY. THIS IS A NEW ERA IN CBA HISTORY. FRESHTIGE!‖
-Bianca Sing, Alfred Mendoza, Tricia Peralta
First Year Batch Representatives
―For the past 3 years, I have been playing interbatch basketball.
Despite all the team practices, the hardwork, the sweat and
blood, the coveted championship always eluded us. I realized that
this year, our Senior year, when the pressure would be at its
highest, I had to deliver. I had to dig deeper, to practice more, to
work harder, to win the championship. When it mattered the most,
the team finally did it! The Championship, my MVP, is a tribute to
God, my loved ones, my teammates and to the Seniors, who stuck
with the team through thick and thin all these years and who never
wavered in their support for us! I did it... WE did it!‖
-Sherdil Rana, IV – BS BA
MVP, Men‟s Basketball
When I became the Seniors batchrep, I knew BACBACAN I would
be one of the greatest challenges we have to face as a batch;
that is, as Seniors, we were pressured to continue the legacy of
being the Bacbacan champion. But after months of planning,
weeks of rigorous practices, days of panic and paranoia attacks
and countless sleepless nights with my batchmates, I realized that
BACBACAN is not just about getting that championship trophy, or
proving that we have what it takes to be champions. More than
winning, Bacbacan is about making stories of bruises and wounds,
of missed classes and failed exams, of laughter and tears, of
friendship and love (teams). Seniors 11-12, you have just made a
truly wonderful and EXTRA STRONG BACBACAN story, and we are
proud and honored to be your batchreps! <3
-Marian Concibido
Seniors Batch Representative
With half of an army left, we geared up for battle with only one goal in
mind - enjoy our last Bacbacan together. Despite everybody's busy
schedules, we managed to squeeze in some practices every week
and form decent Cheerdance, volleyball, Basketball and futsal teams.
But during the week of Bacbacan, Murphy's law got the best of us: a
storm postponed our dreaded accounting exam to 2 days before
bacbacan so we had to arrange and rearrange our cheerdance
practices, day in and day out. We practiced even if we just endured
an 8 hour exam and we only finished our routine 15 minutes before we
were evicted from the place where we were practicing. We were half
a batch short, yet we showed how cheerdance wasn't always about
the complexity of the lifts and dances, it was all about that energy you
bring to the dance floor and consequently feed off from your eager
batchmates. Even if we didn't win overall, we were true champions
that day. Our mixed feelings towards accounting wasn't the force that
made us work together, cheer for our dancers and players non-stop,
and pull the tug of war rope with all our strength... It was a sense of
pure batch unity and love. We are the Terminals - and this was our
BACBACAN story.
-Eana Cubacub
Terminals Batch Representative
After losing the BACBACAN championship last year, our batch's
volleyball team was hungry for that sweet victory this year. We fought
every game with such passion and dedication. And true enough, we
never gave up even for a single set. During the games, two things
proved to be keys to our success: building the team spirit and enjoying
the game. Let's go JunROARS!
-John Ani, III – BS BAA
MVP, Mixed Volleyball
For a year now we have been aiming to redeem ourselves from last
year's BACBACAN. Fear of our opponents and failure overwhelmed us
but our hunger to win made all the difference. Each and every one of
us had the desire to prove ourselves. And this was evident in the way
the whole team performed. No doubt our common goal was to give
pride to our batch!
-Miki Sakaki, III – BS BA
MVP, Futsal
Last year, we brought the
FRESHure, this year, we are
BACK IN YELLOW and going
for GOLD. After last year's
experience, we made sure to
come back more prepared
by starting with BACBACAN
signups during the summer. It
was then followed by a series
of workshops, practice
sessions, and batch bonding
activities. Employing the
huge amount of talent in the
batch, from the cheer
dancers, the athletes from
the many different sports, and of course, to the boosters, we fostered
batch unity. Everyone became not only proud to be YELLOW, but also
proud to be in CBA. What else do we have to say? "MANALO,
MATALO, MAY 2-3 YEARS PA KAMI!" Watch out CBA, we're coming
back next year with a vengeance.

Freshtige - it was the goal we wanted our batch to achieve in
BACBACAN, and we truly did make a name for ourselves by
giving our best. All of the late nights practicing for
cheerdance, the afternoons spent practicing for basketball,
volleyball, and futsal, and the loss of dignity of Mr. and Ms.
Bacbacan was all worth it at the end. Though we didn't
emerge as champions, it still felt like it because we all made
new friends and became closer together as a batch. We are
so proud and happy with how far the batch has come in terms
of unity, and pride. We really love you guys from the bottom of
our hearts, and we hope you had an amazing Bacbacan
experience. This is just the beginning of our many years
together at CBA, and what a great start it has been. We can't
wait for more :)
-T.B.A. (Tricia.Bianca.Alfred.) Freshman Batch Representatives
This year started out on a very promising note, we not only had
a fresh start but also experience to back up our drive, we
aimed to conquer and show everyone that we are SOPHREME.
No longer babies of the college, we were eager to work, play
and perform harder and better, we knew that Cinco was a
thing of the past. We are so proud of Team Sophreme for
stepping it up and going through all the stresses and fun of
balancing our first majors and BACBACAN as one big happy
family, one batch. We know for sure that the next years are
going to be brighter and bigger and we'll get that much
deserved crown, soon. PPG LOVES YOU! -Fen, Maeca, Nina

Weeks of getting dead tired, getting home late and going to
school with less than 4 hours of sleep – a typical scenario for
CBA students preparing for a much-awaited
BACBACAN. Apart from these challenges, the Juniors faced
the difficul ty of matching our schedules for
practices. Moreover, the weighty academics (and for the BAA
students, the danger of getting kicked out of the BAA
program) proved to be a challenge in encouraging people to
join the teams. However, determination, passion and love for
the batch prevailed. BACBACAN day came and our
cheerdance, Mr. & Ms. and sports teams, led by the captains,
sought to give their all. The boosters came as well and
cheered our teams with all their heart (and lungs). That day,
the Juniors forgot about their academics and other concerns
and just became one batch having fun and flaunting its
prowess to CBA.
JUNROARS, congratulations for a job well done! From the
practices to the big day, I have seen you give your all be it in
playing, dancing, singing, acting and cheering for our batch!
We have been an extraordinary team since our freshman year
but this year we have become a much stronger force. The
determination, unity and love we have has been fortified and
with these, even without the trophy, we are worthy to be
deemed champions. Junroars, you never fail to inspire us and
make us proud :)

This 2nd semester, new stories will unfold.. from the CBA orgs. Get ready for BACBACAN 2! DECEMBER 2011
A CBA Perspective in the UP Budget Issue By: WESLY CORTEZ
CBA, together with the rest of the constituent colleges of
the University of the Philippines Diliman, took part in the
resounding call by almost 200 State Universities and
Colleges to increase the investment allocated by the National Government in this coming fiscal year. The highlight of the
campaign to strengthen the renewed call for an increase in the state subsidy for 2012 happened from September 21-23
where the University Student Council and other university organizations, clubs and political formations took part in a roster of
activities designed to gear students on the issue.
As per our College, we also took part and made our efforts known through a series of interactions with our fellow CBA-ers on
disseminating the information through different channels. We have handed out random survey forms coming from the
College Representative’s Midsemester Discussion on what’s happening with the UP budget. These were given out during the
month of August, from which we have collected sentiments from a number of respondents asking the UP administration to
focus on infrastructure, advanced technologies in research institutions in the University and higher allocation for teaching
enrichment and student activities with the appropriations to be given this year.
On a more technological front, we have released the online campaign ―Anyare sa Budget‖, an extension of our
Midsemester Discussion where we have subdivided the discussion into three areas: (1) ―Anyare na ba?‖, giving out the
context of the 5.54 billion budget that would be given next year and how it ended up with that figure, (2) an excerpt from
our letter to Student Regent Conti stating our support on UP’s endeavors to increase the budget, and (3) ―Anong magagawa
natin?‖, a list of the events that UPCBA students can attend to know more about the budget issue.
CBA Gives Back to the Staff By: JERELLEEN RODRIGUEZ
We have all been helped at least once by our dear Ate’s and Kuya’s in BA. After
everything they have given with their unwavering dedication, it is now about time for
CBA to give back. The UP CBA Council and the Giving Back Team, together with the
UP Association of Biology Majors held a Medical Mission for the BA staff last August
14, at the UP Grandstand. A number of BA staff members came to the activity in the morning together with
their family to get their health checked. They received medicines and vitamins plus
goodies which were cheerfully donated by our grateful CBA students. The program started out with the whole team entertaining our beloved BA staff
members. However, it turns out that our BA staff members were scheduled for more
activities during the day that they couldn’t stay for the whole program. They were
really happy to have a day out for themselves being pampered be the people they
serve. As the BA staff members left the program, they were replaced by different
residents from the villages near UP. Our giving back to the BA staff members has turned out into giving back to the
whole community. Everyone was happy having their health checked and getting
their goodies. The whole team was satisfied because they did not just give joy to the
BA staff members but they also served a greater purpose in the society. CBA’s most-loved security officer Ate Nelia
and her son joined the Giving Back
activities.
A Different Way of Giving Back
By: FRED ANGULO Last September 3, the BAC, in cooperation with Business
World and The French Baker, held ―Entrep 101 for
Everyone‖, an entrepreneurship seminar that aimed at
having non-business majors learn that which they
recognize but do not develop formally -- the value of
entrepreneurship. The student council had one simple point: eyeing business opportunities may be instinctive to many, but it
often takes an expert guide to turn these opportunities into concrete work.
The BAC’s ultimate goal for the symposium was to help iskolars ng bayan in turning their
entrepreneurial dreams into reality. BAC also recognizes its role in further building business
administration as a career and a field of study.
The symposium featured speakers coming from diverse backgrounds in the field of
entrepreneurship—Gary Quemado, an entrepreneurship professor from the Asian Institute of
Management and UP, Adrian Adriano, the founder of Moon Leaf, Good Food Co.’s Charlene
Tan a UP Engineering graduate, and Ideals Creatives’ Marielle Nadal, a UP Fine Arts alumna.
UP students taking degree programs in engineering, home economics, mass communication,
statistics, among others, participated in the event.
BA 192 instructor Prof. Gary Quemado shares his
perspective on entrepreneurship to non-CBA students.
