Our last two races were memorable. The Louis H. Orr Jr. Invitational had 29 boats compete. Unfortunately, lack of wind necessitated canceling the race, but we still had a great party. A 29 boat race is not a one man show so we need to thank those who worked to make it such a success. On the water, helping to keep the race moving, were Tony Mullé & Dick Labella aboard Chris Sicignano’s Sybaris. Chuck Hoyler jumped in to be mark set and ended up doing numerous other jobs. Ashore were Christine Mullé, Sandralee Capitain, Jerry Dunnells and Trudie & Gary Guarino who kept the food hot waiting for the racers. pit and an astronomy lesson from John Holst. We knew we were in for a show when John made numerous trips to his car to set up his telescope. Not only were we treated to Neptune & her three moons but we also saw the shadows and outlines of the moon. Looking through John’s telescope made you feel like you were there. Outstanding!!!

Sunday morning everyone arose and prepared for the last race of the season. Winds were light but 14 boats came out, including the 45 year old Wild Blue II. We attempt to take her out for a race each season, but alas the winds didn’t cooperate so we had a slow go around the course. We still had a blast. We even attempted to fly one of our old spinnakers. We knew they were fairly outdated when from a cloud of dust we were asked, “What kind of sail was that?!” Thanks to Tom & Chrissie Devine for running a great race!

At the post race party we crowned a new Corinthian King for the 2008 season, new member Paul Rendich who aboard Clipper secured the top spot with an impressive 4 points!!! Runner up was Jim Reichel’s Silver Bullet and in third place was Andrew “I’m only an Idea Guy” Hemingway’s Flying Wasp. To receive the courtesies afforded the Corinthian King, Paul will be required to wear his crown for next year’s season.

I’ll be moving on to a new Committee assignment next year. The past three years have been very fulfilling and have exceeded any expectations I had. While everyone has said I did a great job, it truly is the membership who made it the success it is by helping, racing and just enjoying the program. I’d like to thank our out-going Commodore, “Soon-to-be Red Pants” John Bell, who during his two years at the helm took a vested interested not only in our great Club but in the Regatta program as well. While not a boater, over the years John has tried giving the seafaring life a go and while not always successful he kept at it with the intent of seeing our programs improve. Finally I need to thank my family; my girls Lainie and Lizzie, and my better half Christine for all the help, support, guidance, patience and comic relief (which only a 4 & 6 year old can provide), they’ve given me over the past three years. GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS –––– THANK YOU SO MUCH!!THANK YOU SO MUCH!!THANK YOU SO MUCH!!THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

The members and their guests make all the MNF’s so much fun to host. We had our share of great games and late nights this year. There were many volunteers that helped along the way, especially Bob Landhauser and Bob Greene who helped with the setup every Monday, Jim Loeffler who organized a number of

card games to help pass the time, Doug & Peggy Williamson for being there any time I needed them, Gary Guarino for making sure we did not run out of beer and the stewards for making sure we always had everything we needed.

This year we had a number of guest cooks, and while I did not get through all the volunteers (don’t worry I will get you next year) a round of applause is in order for this year’s guest cooks: Alyssa VanBourgondien, Anna Murphy, Bill Hueber, and Mike Murtha. A very special thank you goes to Bernadette Broderick who filled in as guest cook on a few occasions, did most of my shopping and was there to help me in any way I needed. Without her it would not have been quite the same. If I left anyone out it was not intentional, please have a happy and safe winter. Again, thanks for a great year.

With their usual style and flair they put out a terrific spread! Classic Fireside Hash, blueberry French toast (SO good!), omelets made to order. There were bagels with smoked salmon and an incredibly delicious assortment of homemade breads and muffins. Add to this Bloody Mary’s and Mimosa’s for the big kids and chocolate milk for the little kids.

Delicious!! Helping out the Patwells were Tom & Jane Kane, Gil & Barbara Schlerf, Mary Freund Paul & Terry Elmstrom, Paul & Sue Greco and Doug & Peggy Williamson. A Cuban-fusion menu was served. 84 Members enjoyed lime scampi shrimp, grilled skirt steak on toast, Cuban pork with mango salsa, rice and black beans and, of course, Carl’s homemade crab cakes which were sublime! Dessert was just as good - tropical sorbet, homemade flan, cracker candy and key lime cheese cake. Ricky Ricardo’s got nothin’ on Carl and Sandy! Thanks to the Galians and their crew: Michelle & Bill Kern (who single-handedly manned the grill), Beth Walters and Ginny Horan who helped out in a pinch (even though they were both under the weather) and Barbara Schaefer whose flan-tastic flan was “restaurant quality” according to the crowd!

The Captain’s Trophy was awarded to Taryn Birkmire, Maria Parascandola and Sheila McLoughlin (A.K.A. The McLoughlin Sisters).
