“...The Best Choice”“With all of the possible activities available for infants, we struggled to decide which one to choose for our daughter. We settled on The Little Gym and now know we made the best choice. As an infant, she was exposed to physical stimuli and new movements while socializing with her peers in a colorful and playful environment. The music, activities and warm nurturing teachers helped develop her motor skills and her confidence. Even at 7 months old, her arms and legs would kick with excitement upon entering The Little Gym.

“We could not wait for our son to make it to 4 months so we could enroll him, too. Now at 8 months, he loves The Little Gym just as much as his sister. Even at such a young age, the benefits of The Little Gym are easy to see!”

rittany Edwards Cobb has a ton on her to-do list. Write for The Dallas Morning News, edit DailyCandy Dallas, find fabulous vendors for the Dallas Flea, chase 18-month-old daughter

Landry, push through pregnancy-induced nausea and tell us how she and husband Michael are savoring the aftershock of cocktails in the Caribbean.

BMom-To-Be: Brittany

Edwards Cobb

You’re pregnant! How are You feeling tHis time around?

I’ve been a lot more nause-ated. And I started showing just a couple of weeks after finding out I was pregnant. I’ve also had a lot of lower back pain and less desire to work out; I’m sure that’s partly to blame on chasing a toddler around the house nonstop.

You’re about to be a boY mom. anY trutH to tHose old wives’ tales about girl vs. boY pregnancies?

A little bit. I’m definitely car-rying Barrett lower, and there’s no doubt I started showing sooner and have a much bigger belly this go-around. But my cravings have been about the same, and I still shovel in the sugar.

wHat do You know now witH tHis pregnancY tHat You wisH You’d known witH Your first?

Very few pregnancies are perfect, just roll with the punches (and kicks!) and trust your doctor’s advice. My daughter was breech at full term, and I had to have a C-section. This time I currently have

placenta previa and have to keep a watchful eye on my condition.

cravings …Early on, I was itching for

gummy bears and was a big fan of carbs, especially pasta. I’ve also wanted a lot of water this pregnancy. I’m pretty back to my normal self now, just eating more than usual and I’m always up for dessert.

some women saY tHeY love being pregnant. is tHis true for You?

Yes and no. I feel blessed to get pregnant so easily and feel a deep sense of honor in carrying a child. That said, I don’t love the weight gain, aches, pains and nausea. And don’t get me started on how much I miss my martinis and margaritas. It’s all worth it, though.

two babies two Years apart – was tHis part of tHe master plan?

Let’s just say don’t mix rum and the Bahamas if you don’t want a bun in the oven! In real-ity, though, we were aiming to have another baby before my husband turns 40 next summer,

so although it was sooner than expected, the timing has ended up being pretty perfect.

so does tHis mean barrett is tHe last cobb babY?

We think so. I’m really trying to enjoy the journey. I take a few minutes every night while slather-ing my belly in oil to reflect on the ride.

a toddler and a babY bump …Definitely makes for an earlier

bedtime. I’m pretty pooped by the end of the day and have lower back pain because of pick-ing Landry up and carrying her throughout the day.

How is landrY Handling everYtHing? is sHe aware of tHe big cHanges coming?

I don’t think so. We talk about it with her, and she now says “baby” when I point to my belly. But other than that, she’s just busy doing things 18-month-olds do.

wHat are You most looking forward to about barrett’s arrival?

I feel so lucky to have a girl and boy. I grew up with two little brothers, so I’m very familiar with all things “boy.” I’m most looking forward to giving Landry a sibling and watching the two of them bond. My husband is over the moon to have a little boy on the way and that gives me such pleasure too. That said, he better be a mama’s boy!

read a ton of books during my first pregnancy. What I was looking for was a manual – a scientific how-to on everything baby. What I found instead were many theo-ries on parenting, and there wasn’t a single one I totally

agreed with. I took bits and pieces from each book and formulated my own plan. Remember, you’re the one having your baby, and you will have to discover what works best for you and your family. Here are some books that provided pieces of the puzzle:

On Becoming Baby Wise: Giving Your Infant the Gift of Nighttime Sleep by Gary Ezzo

Don’t be turned off by the author, who’s con-

troversial in some circles. There’s a lot to be said for developing structure in your baby’s feedings. This book was a life-saver for me, and the “Parent-Directed Feeding” philosophy eventually morphed into breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth by Sheila Kitzinger

This book doesn’t push beliefs or philosophies on you. It gives you all the information you need to devise your own sort-of perfect pregnancy and a birth plan that

fits you. There are lots of photos and illustrations, which are great for quick reference.

The Baby Book: Everything You Need to Know About Your Baby from Birth to Age Two by William Sears, Martha Sears, Robert W. Sears, James Sears

Originally published two decades ago, this classic baby guide helped in those mini-freak-out newborn moments – like discovering a rash all over my baby’s body caused by the red dye in a children’s medi-cine. I kept this one bedside and referenced it often.

Breastfeeding by Jack Newman, Teresa Pitman

This one bypasses the mystical talk about breastfeeding and provides a practical how-to. It gave me tips on when to start feeding and taught me not to be afraid to ask the nurses for help if I couldn’t get my baby to latch on correctly.

The Baby Owner’s Manual: Operating Instructions, Trouble-Shooting Tips, and Advice on First-Year Maintenance by Louis Borgenicht, M.D.

This witty manual was gifted to my husband at our

t’s mid-afternoon, and you’re working your way down this week’s grocery list. You picked the basket with the squeaky wheel (again) and you’re clack-clack-clacking your way up the freezer aisle when – Ugh! You fumble through your

purse and somewhere amidst the tissues, lip-gloss tubes and Tylenol, you find a handful of peppermints, a.k.a. your lifesavers, and right now your favorite food in the whole wide world. They might not hit the spot like all that ice cream you were craving last month or the Nacho Cheese Doritos you just threw in the cart, but these peppermints are exactly what you need.

Morning Sickness

w o r d s C a r r i e S t e i n g r u b e r

Peppermints are a mom-tested remedy for morning sickness, that most loathsome of misnomers and your mortal enemy right about now. You feel hungry and full at the same time, like you need food but you won’t be able to keep anything down. It’s uncomfortable and obnoxious, and it’s really cramping your mommy-to-be style.

Why are you experiencing this tummy-twisting sensation? “There’s no one hard and fast answer to that question,” says Dr. Xercerla Littles, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at UT Southwestern Medical School. She explains that scientists have yet to hammer down a universal cause for morning sickness, though they strongly sus-pect it’s associated with a change in hormone levels.

Research suggests that rising levels of estrogen and progesterone can cause the lower esophageal sphincter to relax, allowing stomach acids to re-enter the esophagus. This results in acid reflux and the feeling that you need to vomit. Littles says the build-up of acid is exacerbated by lying down all night, so pregnant women “just have a lot of acid on board in the morning” – hence the moniker.

Though it’s named for that queasy feeling that sets in before you even get out of bed, morning sickness is actually an umbrella term that encompasses the nausea pregnant women feel any time during the day. Littles says that some women do not feel sick until early afternoon or evening, and that many find their nausea set IL

off at random by strong smells or other triggers. The symptoms generally start manifesting about 6 weeks into pregnancy, peaking at 8–10 weeks.

Your morning sickness could predict the sex of your baby, if you believe the old wives’ tale. Melissa espey-Mueller, founder of North Dallas Doula associates, explains that those raging hormones caus-ing your illness are traditionally associated with carrying a baby girl. Though she’s skeptical, the mom of five does admit that she had terrible morning sickness with her three girls and none with her boys. espey-Mueller believes strongly in well-ness practices such as acupuncture and chiropractic care, explaining that these holistic treatments can relieve morning sickness.

Moms can also make simple lifestyle changes to combat nausea, such as lying in bed for a while after turning off their alarms. eating a little something in the morning before rolling out of bed can also keep things quiet, but during the day, Littles recommends that moms refrain from reclining for 35–45 minutes after eating.

both Littles and espey-Mueller report success with acupressure bands, the same kind used to allay motion sickness. even a basic wardrobe shift – wearing less confining clothing – can relieve pressure on the belly and ease morning sickness.

but your diet is where big changes may need to happen. Littles recommends eating small, snacky meals throughout the day. “That does not mean you have Jack in the box and Wendy’s every two hours,” she clarifies, no matter what your cravings tell you. Instead, stock up on bland foods and lean proteins. The bRaT diet – bananas, rice, apple sauce and toast, often recommended for patients with diarrhea – can be effective against

morning sickness as well.

anything that doesn’t smell good is a no-go, as hormones can cause your nose to work overtime. “a lot of people feel like they have a much stronger sense of smell,” Littles says, and this heightened sensitivity often correlates with a heightened gag reflex. one whiff of his cologne or your leftover pizza might have you racing to the restroom.

espey-Mueller says essential oils may help to mask unpleasant odors and soothe your sniffer – but make sure you find scents your stomach can handle.

Prenatal vitamins can relieve nausea while supplementing the nutrients you might be forgoing because of dietary changes. espey-Mueller stresses the importance of vitamin b in particular. “Increasing your vitamin b is always a really good option,” she says, speaking again from experience with her own five pregnancies as well as sci-entific evidence. “Studies show that if you increase your vitamin b, you decrease acid reflux and nausea.”

Littles agrees, but cautions moms against overdoing it; she pre-scribes 10–25 milligrams of vitamin b6 two to three times a day, but no more than 100 milligrams a day.

other effective pills include over-the-counter emetrol and sleep aid Unisom. Littles says taking half a tablet of Unisom daily has helped many of her patients.

There are other anti-nausea medications your ob/GYN could prescribe, but many moms are cautious about medicating during

pregnancy. Instead, women swear by snacks such as sal-tine crackers, peanut butter with apple slices or pepper-mints, all consum-able in small bites to ease the burden on your stomach.

espey-Mueller relied heavily on ginger tea during her pregnancies. Ginger is a proven remedy for morning sickness, whether in the form of tea, ginger ale, gum or crystals.

other herbs may be effective, but Littles advises women to consult their doctors before starting an herbal tea regimen, as some herbs can do more harm than good.

above all, it’s important just to eat something. “Sometimes when we feel nauseated or feel like we want to vomit, we don’t want to eat anything,” espey-Mueller says. “Don’t let your stomach get empty.”

Littles does warn moms-to-be that morning sickness can become a serious condition called hyper-emesis, which she sees in 8–10 percent of her patients. “If you’re not making urine – or it’s super-concen-trated – or if you’re not able to keep down liquids or solids, or if despite your best efforts you’ve lost a lot of weight in a short period of time, you need to see your doctor.” You might need intravenous treatment to replenish fluids and nutrients.

Thankfully, most moms will never need an IV to treat morning sickness, just gobs of peppermints. While some moms may experi-ence a little nausea throughout their pregnancy, Littles reports that most women feel their stomachs settle around 12–14 weeks. “It’s like everything else,” she says. “This too shall pass.” ●

pregnancy

rant’s story actually begins with my first preg-nancy – twins. In the same breath I was told there were two heartbeats inside me, my doctor informed me that she didn’t deliver multiples

vaginally. I ended up with a scheduled C-section and two beautiful, healthy identical daughters, but I already knew that I’d attempt a vaginal birth after Cesarean (VBAC) for my next pregnancy. Little did I know that my choice would set me on a path of many twists and turns, and that I’d have to take a firm stand even to get a shot at a VBAC for little Grant.

GEighteen months after my

daughters’ births, Grant was on the way. Our initial birth plan was to deliver vaginally with an epidural, in the hospital. I didn’t want to have surgery again, because of the risks and costs involved. Plus, with twin toddlers running my life, I wasn’t in a position to lie low for an extended recovery after another C-section. I managed to find a doctor who was willing to do VBACs, but there was a caveat: She wouldn’t induce, because Pitocin can generate hard and fast

contractions that could possibly rupture my old incision.

Fortunately, the pregnancy flew by. Six weeks before my due date, however, I took a Lamaze class that became a huge turning point for my husband and me. We were amazed by the strategies available to manage labor pain; the class totally transformed my perspec-tive on birthing. I also learned that the many drugs and interventions commonly used in labor could inter-rupt the body’s natural flow to give birth successfully, possibly forcing

us down the path to another C-section. For the very first time we considered having a natural, non-medicated vaginal birth.

Sold on natural birth, I found the perfect doula to coach me, Courtney Sirmon. during our prenatal visits, she encouraged me to check out the VBAC policies of my hospital and OB. turns out they all had conditions: My doctor said she wouldn’t let me go past 41 weeks without a C-section, and the hospital had a low VBAC rate, which concerned me. VBAC patients usually are hooked up to monitors, hindering them from getting in the different positions necessary to manage a trial of labor.

I was left with a few options: finding another doctor who ran a VBAC-only practice, going to a birth-ing center or hiring a midwife so I could have my baby at home. At 39 ½ weeks – with the possibility of go-ing past 41 weeks increasing by the day – I searched for a midwife and immediately found Jenee Ohrvall. She was a great choice: beautiful and professional yet friendly and down to earth. She understood how important a VBAC was to me. She also had twin girls, so we bonded over that too.

I first met Jenee at the end of a long day. the drive to her office was a bit far, and we ended up getting caught in rush-hour traffic with the twins. One got sick on the way, so we had to stop and clean her up. When we finally arrived, one of my girls was wearing just a diaper and shoes. We looked bedraggled, but Jenee understood. though we didn’t make any decisions that night, Jenee instilled confidence about doing a natural birth at home.

We thought we’d have a few days to think over this whole home-birth thing. But my water broke just 12 hours later. I called Jenee’s

cell, and she took my call at 5:30am, laughing. “Let’s do it!” I said.

My husband took the day off and went

shopping for the supplies we’d need.

Courtney arrived in the morning, and Jenee came

in the early afternoon. We all sat in my living room and talked between contractions. Jenee encouraged me to eat, drink and rest. At one point my husband brought in dinner for everyone, and we were munching fried chicken and okra and drinking iced tea. Jenee told me to slow down on the fried chicken or I’d regret it.

no one talked during my contractions, which helped me focus. My twin daughters were at preschool, then came home and took naps. Otherwise, they were in the house going about their day. nothing fazed them. they were asleep during the roughest part, so they didn’t hear my labor pains.

My hard labor remains fuzzy in my memory; I’ve heard it called the “fog of labor.” I understand that, because the pain was so bad in such a primal way that I really don’t remember how I felt. I could feel the baby drop with each contraction, and I felt the need to push. I didn’t let Jenee check my dilation because of the pain of lying flat on my back. So, we never knew how many centimeters I was dilated; we judged by how I felt.

By the time the assistant midwife arrived, I was done walking around the neighborhood and bouncing on the exercise ball. I

was in a state of full concentration, eyes closed, striving to follow each direction they gave. I labored in the hot bath, and then I tried contrac-tions on the toilet and the birthing stool, then on all fours hugging the exercise ball on my bed. I was given oxygen to help increase the baby’s heart rate. that helped, and I had the mask on from transition through the remainder of labor.

I pushed for 60 to 90 minutes. And just when Jenee thought she’d have to do an episiotomy, the assistant midwife suggested having me in the full squat position on the floor leaning against my bed. that did the trick, thankfully, and I didn’t even tear!

the relief I felt was unlike any other. Labor was over, the pain was gone, I was no longer pregnant, and we had an 8-pound, 8-ounce baby boy. After delivering the placenta, the baby and I took a warm herbal bath, which helped reduce inflammation.

the personal attention made the whole experience possible for me: Courtney using her feet in the bath to provide counter-pressure against my hips, the coaching they gave my husband so he could support me better, and the little

midwife secrets that helped me with newborn nurturing. All of this added up to the kind of care only a home birth could provide. Staying at home turned out to be the best way for me to ensure a VBAC, and to this day, I consider Grant’s birth my greatest accom-plishment. ●

WYou were once surrounded bY 100 rattlesnakes for a report, and You said You’d never be that nervous again. did impending motherhood bring back old fears?

I was terrified of giving birth. I think I watched too many movies. My mother kept reassuring me that it wasn’t that bad. Thankfully, I had a fairly easy delivery. As far as being a mom, I couldn’t wait; I counted down the days [Landry was born April 27, 2013].

how was Your pregnancY?It was good, except for bath-

room breaks. We’re on the air for four-and-a-half hours straight; that’s a long time to hold it when you’re pregnant. They had to build breaks into the newscast just for me.

You’re verY open about Your adventures in pregnancY and parenting on facebook.

I was weepy after I had Landry, and I shared that [on my Facebook page]. “Oh my, gosh, she’s never going to be four days old again,” I’d cry. Shane jokingly called me Wil-low. I put it out there, the viewers responded and I’ve really enjoyed the feedback. It’s interesting to see the way everyone parents. There’s really no right or wrong way.

parenting and pinterest go together …

I’m addicted! My husband makes fun of me, because I’m on it all the time. It’s like a never-ending magazine with great ideas.

how manY photos have You taken since landrY was born?

I can’t believe how many I’ve taken! We’ve already had to get another computer and another ex-ternal hard drive. I’m actually pretty overwhelmed with how I’m going to save all of this, how I’m going to get organized.

Your on-air role requires a 2am wake-up call. how does this work with a newborn?

It’s worked really well; I’ve been surprised. Landry goes to bed about 6:30pm, my husband and I have dinner and then we go to bed. She wakes up around 5am – we just lucked out in this depart-ment. The great thing is that I’m off work by 10am, so by the time I get home I can see her and play with her and then she’s ready for a nap. And I’m ready for a nap too.

have You changed since landrY was born?

I’ve always been such a planner, always looking forward to the next thing. For the first time in my life, I’m

living in the moment. And I’m also much more confident. I know my place in the world and I’m surround-ed by so much love, I don’t know what could be better than that.

and Your husband?Shane’s always been very, very

playful – he’s the perfect dad. He’s maybe a little softer now because he’s got this little girl in his life, and maybe he’s a little more of a pushover too. He looks at her, she smiles and he just melts.

Your marriage?Since having Landry, I’ve

learned that one of the most im-portant decisions you make in your life is choosing your mate. I feel so lucky in this respect. Emotionally, Shane and I are stronger now. We truly feel like a team. Physically, we were an active couple before Landry joined us, and we continue to be active with her now.

what’s been the greatest surprise thus far about be-ing a mom?

How quickly babies grow. Landry has some adorable outfits she only got to wear once. I’m so bummed.

and the not-so-greatest?Landry’s first cold was hard to

watch. In my head I knew it was just a cold, but as a mom, I felt so bad, I just wanted a magic wand to make her better.

what are You most looking forward to as landrY grows up?

I can’t wait to see the world through her eyes, as if everything old is new again.

mid shelf after shelf of baby-food jars at the grocery store, it’s hard not to ask, “Is this really the freshest food for my baby?” Well, there is an alternative. Have you ever

thought about making your own baby food? Dallas mom and certified health coach Clayton Robinson gave us her favorite tips for preparing all of your baby’s meals at home. Move aside, Rachael Ray – we’ve got some new chefs in the kitchen.

AAlways peel the skins of the

fruits and vegetables, and cook your baby’s food until she is at least 8 months of age. Cooking breaks down these foods and aids in digestion. Bananas and avocados are exceptions.

Use fresh fruits and vegeta-bles. Frozen is a second choice; never use canned. Canned foods have lower amounts of nutrients, and they are filled with preserva-tives, sodium and sugar. Most cans expose us to BPA, an indus-trial chemical, as well as metals. Consider this: Most cans are older than your baby.

Try feeding your baby just the vegetables for the first few months. Get them to love the bit-ter and pungent foods before they get hooked on the taste of sweet fruits. This just might help them love and accept veggies later.

Vegetables and fruits are easier than grains on the digestive system. Quinoa and brown rice are the easiest of all,

cooked foods is to puree or mash them with breast milk. Babies seem to make the adjust-ment easily if they’re ready for solid food. The best way to know if they’re ready is when they’re actually interested in what’s on your plate. Don’t force it because you’re ready. Let them signal to you.

Pick your baby’s “first” food wisely. Some great foods to try include avocado, green

beans, carrots, peas, sweet potatoes and squash. They are all full of nutrients. I’m a fan of the avocado, because it provides your baby with good fats that help their brains develop. ●

• Infantino’s Fresh Squeezed Baby Food System: This system

packages your homemade baby food into easy-to-serve squeeze pouches. With everything from

a squeeze station and reusable pouches to a puree machine and steam-and-strain bucket,

Infantino has every step covered.

• Béaba Babycook Pro: Only have 15 minutes? Don’t worry – that’s the amount of time the Babycook Pro needs to steam-

cook and blend your fruits, vege-tables, meat or fish into baby food.

veggies and one for milling grains.

if you do decide to introduce grains. Don’t forget that rice turns to sugar in our diges-tive system, so think twice be-fore giving your baby rice and other cere-als. Feeding our babies grains too early can set them up for yeast and/or food allergies later. If they don’t know it exists, they won’t miss it, right?

MSo what is it? Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

is a common viral pathogen that can infect the upper and lower airways. The virus can affect everyone, young and old, with symptoms resembling the common cold (runny nose, congestion, cough, fever, etc.). While the virus typically runs its course in older children and adults, the most at-risk patients are infants and children infected with RSV for the first time. More specifically, immuno-compromised children and infants who are preterm, have bronchopul-monary dysplasia or a congenital heart disease are at a higher risk of developing severe illness when infected with the virus and run a risk of pneumonia or death.

RSV is the most common cause of lower respiratory tract infections (bronchiolitis, pneumonia) in infants younger than 1 and one of the most common reasons infants are hospitalized, says Dr. Tess Barton, associate professor of pediatrics at UT Southwestern and Children’s Medical Center Dallas. “In Texas it’s a seasonal virus,” she says, “occurring almost entirely in the winter, usually November to March.”

Barton adds that infants and premature babies run a higher risk of dangerous infections from RSV

systems aren’t able to control the virus quickly.”

Preventing the sPread Like most viruses, RSV is

contagious, and can spread from person to person through infected secretions (sneezing, touching after wiping a runny nose, etc.). Normal measures such as covering coughs and sneezes, sanitizing shared toys and cleaning door handles are ways to prevent spread of this virus. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC)

recommends practicing hygiene diligently during RSV season, advis-ing parents to teach their children to wash their hands for 10–20 seconds with soap and water.

While good hand-washing is paramount in protecting little ones, the American Academy of Pediatrics urges parents of infants at higher risk of RSV complications to avoid exposure to the virus altogether. They suggest par-ents avoid crowded shopping malls and, if possible, day-care centers where the virus can easily spread from child to child. ●

Symptoms of RSV

In adults and older chil-dren, symptoms resemble the common cold, with a runny nose and cough.

But symptoms can quickly worsen and result in lower respiratory tract disease

with rapid breathing, wheezing, retractions, la-

bored breathing and more. Coughs can last weeks

after a resolved infection.

For infants, early symptoms include runny nose, fever, raspy cough and labored breathing. In more severe cases, RSV can affect the

lungs, producing large amounts of nasal and

respiratory mucous, result-ing in difficulty breathing

or dangerously low oxygen levels. RSV has been linked

to asthma, and wheez-ing or using abdominal

muscles to push air in and out are common signs

of the virus.

because of small air passages or under-developed lungs in the case of premature infants, which makes their lungs less capable of handling the secretions and inflammation that RSV produces. “RSV induces the body to make a lot of mu-cous, and that mucous can quickly block the nasal pas-sages or even the airways in the lungs,” she says. “Children with con-genital heart conditions may have more severe RSV infections, because the heart must work harder to circulate blood through the lungs. Children with immune system disease may have more severe RSV disease because their immune

ost adults experience it seasonally with little to no knowledge of its existence; nearly all children will be infected by it

by the time they are 2 years old; and if an infant is exposed to it, there could be fatal implications.

ll of the books, studies and advice from fellow moms say the same thing – breastfeeding is the most natural, healthy way to feed your newborn. But what happens when nursing

doesn’t come all that naturally? Lactation consultant Judy Eastburn talks about common breastfeeding problems and gives expert advice to help you stay the course when that bottle of formula is calling your name.

AMy two-day-old baby wants to nurse almost constantly: This is fairly normal. Your body produces colostrum, which some refer to as pre-milk. Colostrum is low in volume but concentrated. Ba-bies don’t need much of it, and very frequently, nursing helps to tell your body to make more milk. Your milk “comes in” usu-ally around Day 2 to Day 5, and then most babies settle down to nursing about 8–10 times per 24 hours, or every 2–3 hours. If your baby’s weight has dropped more than 10 percent of his birth

weight, supplementing may be temporarily necessary.

My breasts are engorged: When the milk comes in, there is also extra fluid and blood that comes into the breast with the transitional milk. It’s often worse if the mother was given lots of IV fluid dur-ing the birth. This engorgement subsides more quickly if the baby nurses early. If nursing doesn’t help and the breasts are still really full, mothers can hand-express or use a pump to help remove milk, and that will make the breasts more comfortable. As the milk is

removed regularly, the extra fluid and blood recede and the breasts are more comfortable and softer. You can place cold packages of frozen peas or corn on the breasts for about 15 minutes between nursings to help reduce the swell-ing. Don’t be afraid to pump for fear that it will make the engorge-ment worse. At this stage, the key is to resolve the engorgement fast.

My nipples are sore: If the breasts are en-gorged, it’s much harder for the baby to get a deep latch. Try hand-expressing or pumping briefly before offering the breast. If breasts are not engorged, the nipple pain might be caused by poor attachment, tongue tie in the infant or other issues. To get a deep latch, your baby should be snuggled in very close to you with the nipple just under baby’s nose. When he opens, bring him in close so the nipple goes deep into his mouth.

I’m afraid I don’t have enough milk: Most mothers can make enough milk for their babies, although there are exceptions. Mothers who’ve had breast reduc-tion surgery, fertility problems, hormonal imbalance or insulin resistance are at risk for not mak-ing enough milk. In many cases, mothers think they’re not making enough because their babies are feeding very often, which can be normal. If there is a concern, the baby’s weight should be checked to confirm good growth. If your baby is growing well, the milk pro-duction is appropriate. If your baby

n the February issue of DallasChild we introduced you to Matt and Mary Emma Hawthorne. This fantastically creative duo – he’s a photographer, she’s an artist – was the subject of that month’s Nesting profile. One chat, one

look, and we were in love. Not only were we enamored with their art-meets-architecture design style but with Matt, Mary Emma and their toddler son Oliver as well. So when the family of three grew to four over the summer, we had to know all about flying trains, trips through the Bishop Arts District and how a little girl named Greta makes them complete.

IHow Has your marriage cHanged since greta was born?

Mary emma [Me]: After hav-ing Oliver, Matt was able to see and know what my needs would be with Greta, and he’s jumped in seamlessly. A huge amount of stress has been taken off my back, which has allowed me to just mother better overall, which I greatly appreciate being able to do.

Matt: I was reminded once again that having a family is a deci-sion we made to commit ourselves to each other and our children. Our time has gotten even tighter, and we’ve had to really focus on our communication and patience.

tell me How your relation-sHip as Husband and wife impacts tHe way you parent.

Me: We respect each other’s decisions and tend to agree on the way we choose to discipline. We feel it’s important to make sure Oliver knows he’s being disciplined out of love in an effort to teach him well, not to take something away from him.

Matt: We’re also very commit-

ted to our church and community group (the group is three other couples with children that live within a mile of us). We meet weekly to talk about our marriages and how to grow spiritually. Having this commitment to other Christ-followers has helped completely in how we make decisions to parent our children.

How do you stay connected? Me: We get out! Matt’s amaz-

ing when it comes to finding fun things for us to do as a family. Last weekend we had the most delight-ful evening strolling the streets of Bishop Arts with Oliver and Greta. Sure, we had to work around feed-ing times and find a place to “park” it for a bit, but it was totally doable. In fact, we found a cute park and we stopped to feed Greta, and Oli-ver got a chance to run off some built-up energy before dinner.

oliver: tHe big brotHer …Me: He’s adjusting as well as

any 2-year-old would. He loves Gre-ta, he asks for her every morning, he loves to kiss her feet and help give her the pacifier when she’s crying.

But, poor guy, he’s still just trying to figure it all out. He wants to be held when I’m going to Greta’s room or about to pick her up. And we need to teach him not to throw his trains in her direction or to butt her tiny head – boys, yikes!

from tHree to four – wHat’s been tHe biggest cHange?

Me: Finding enough patience to give to all four of us.

Matt: Scheduling. Me: And scheduling! Having

a loud, on-the-go toddler, I find myself always planning play dates with other moms. Each morning, I rely on Matt to help me figure out how to get Greta fed and all of us dressed and out the door on time.

tHe greatest joy?Me: Their precious faces and

personalities and just knowing they are entrusted to us from the Lord. Matt and I both love them so much and just want to be with them as much as we can. Obvi-ously the sweet times are more fun than the difficult times, but those wouldn’t be nearly as sweet without the hard times.

tHe best surprise?Me: That my Oliver is so

compassionate. I knew he would be, he’s so tender-hearted, but to see him care for his baby Greta is just the best. I didn’t even go there in my mind as to what that would be like, but I have been positively surprised by it.

Matt: What she said. [Smiles.]

is two tHe magic number?Me: Absolutely. We are done!

oms know there’s really nothing to describe the days and weeks that follow bringing a new baby home. Emotions run the gamut from pure elation to utter sorrow to almost

everything in between. But then there’s something else – sleep de-privation. On top of caring for your new baby, adjusting to your new normal and figuring out what you can wear that will hide the stom-ach that still looks like it’s three months pregnant, you’re dog tired, and the prospect of getting a long, restful night’s sleep is beyond imagining. And just when you thought things couldn’t get worse, you notice that the extreme fatigue your family is experiencing is causing unexpected side effects.

Dream on:Getting baby to sleep

w o r d s S t e p h a n i e M o r r i S - G r a v e S

If you think your baby is the only one not sleeping at night, think again. According to research conducted in the Avon Longitudi-nal Study of Pregnancy and Child-hood (ALSPAC):

• Only 16 percent of babies slept through the night at 6 months old.

• 16 percent of 6-month-olds had no regular sleeping pattern.

• 17 percent of babies woke between two and eight times each night.

• Only 5 percent woke just once every night.

“Interrupted sleep at night can be one of the hardest things to become accustomed to when welcoming a new baby into your

home,” explains Carol Jones of The Swaddling Stork, which provides phone consultations and in-home assistance to help establish baby sleep patterns. “But new parents simply won’t get enough sleep each night, and it will put a strain on their day-to-day routines.” And it can put a strain on your relationships too. Parents might choose to share responsibilities in taking care of new babies, but it’s not uncommon for a new mom to feel like she’s carrying the bulk of the load, particularly if she’s nursing or staying home while her husband goes to work.

When my husband and I brought our first child home from the hospital, we weren’t prepared IL

for the toll that lack of sleep would take on our minds and bodies. Sure, we’d heard things like “pre-pare to be up all night,” but until you experience it for yourself, there’s nothing anyone can say that will truly capture what sleep deprivation feels like.

It wasn’t long before the mutual admiration my husband and I held for each other at being able to cre-ate this little life together turned into mutual annoyance with whichever one of us was able to steal a few moments of sleep while the other fretted over unrelenting baby cries for food, changing or simply want-ing to be held.

Parents may come up with a plan for sharing responsibilities, Jones says, but with not enough sleep in the household, spouses tend to lose their patience over small things, and that can easily escalate into bigger arguments and ongoing tensions. But it doesn’t stop with parents. Siblings, especially younger children, often feel the effects of sleep deprivation when a new baby comes home too. Their own sleep schedules may be disrupted, and they might wake during the night seeking attention for themselves. Siblings might have a general feeling that the new baby is taking their place, causing them to become anxious over the changes in the household.

Jones also cautions parents that not sleeping well can affect your physical well-being and cognitive abilities. She encourages moms to exercise, spend time with friends or read; these kinds of personal activi-ties will help to build and maintain your self-esteem, thus making you a more effective spouse, parent, employee, etc.

Sarah knapp of gentle Sleep Training in Dallas coaches parents with newborns to establish regular sleep cycles for the baby so that parents can get back to their own sleeping patterns as soon as possible. She tells new moms that newborns tend to be “loud” sleepers.

They make many sounds during the night and might even cry out, but each sound doesn’t mean she

should be awakened and fed. She advises parents to wait

until the child is fully awake with eyes completely open to deter-

mine if they’re ready for a feeding.

She also tells parents not to let the baby sleep for overly long stretches during the day. keep him awake for about 30 minutes or so after each feeding before letting him nap. The goal is to get your baby to the place where he’s not relying on a feeding to fall asleep. She encour-ages parents to start this practice as early as possible; the older a child gets, the harder it will be to train him to sleep on his own.

As family sleep advisors, knapp and Jones offer assistance in bringing nor-malcy back into your life after a new baby. knapp confers with parents over the phone and troubleshoots

their issues. She says parents should always:

• Aim to put the baby down each night at the same time, around 7 p.m. or 8 p.m., before he gets into that late-night “fussy period.”

• Make sure the baby gets full feedings during the day. She will sleep better if her stomach is full.

• Avoid feeding the baby at every peep. While your baby should have full feedings at each setting, you don’t have to feed her each time she cries.

• Swaddle small babies so they feel warm and secure.

If parents are still having trouble, white noise such as a bathroom fan can be soothing for babies. Par-ents may also hold and rock their babies just to the point of drowsiness and then lay them down to fall fully asleep on their own.

unfortu-nately, there’s no fail-proof formula to rid your household of the stress that comes with having a new-born, but the sooner families can experience

restful nights, the sooner they’ll experience peaceful days. ●

The Swaddling Stork’s Tips

for Parents of Newborns

1// Get organized! New parents need to save as much time as possible. Being efficient helps put you at ease so you can

manage unforeseen incidents.

2// Allow more time than you think you need for everything.

Routine tasks can take twice as long when you add a baby to

the mix, so building in extra time is critical to help mitigate stress.

3// As difficult as it might be, don’t forget to schedule time for yourself. Take time to exercise, so-cialize, and give attention to the other people in your family who

could feel neglected, spend time with your partner and spend

alone time relaxing.

Babble

ay 1: He’s here! Ten fingers and ten toes. His father’s nose.

Born with his eyes wide open. He is perfection.

Day 2: It’s been 72 hours since I’ve slept. This baby howls like a banshee. My head pounds, and it’s a team effort just to go to the bath-room. Please God, help my milk to come in. Soon.

Day 4: The baby has won. I am his slave. My husband complained of sleeplessness today after getting “only” six hours of sleep.

Day 8: My parents are here for a month. They think every cry is a hunger cry. I have eaten my weight in salt-and-vinegar chips. In other news, porn-star boobs. I got 'em. Engorgement and soreness too.

Day 12: My firstborn asked my parents if he even has a mother any-more, since I’m always nursing the baby. Sigh.

Day 14: Constantly ducking the fountain-like pee spray during diaper changes. Umbilical cord bits look like something out of Lord of the Rings. Please. Fall. Off.

Day 17: I wonder if the person who wrote the Rockabye Baby "lul-laby" might have had a touch of the Baby Blues. #notsingingthattomykid #whyisheinthetreetop

Day 20: I refer to my husband as "Daddy" now. He answers. His eyes smile.

Day 21: Moms of newborns are superheroes, mastering the miraculous and mundane: gin-

D gerly clipping toe and finger nails. Perfecting the ability to swaddle with any cloth available. Making milk. I mean, really.

Day 26: Hemorrhoids. Hair loss. Hooha-healing. Nobody told me how glamorous postpartum was.

Day 28: Went in for a check-up. Frankly, I'm having OB/GYN with-drawal. I got so used to gabbing with the staff and joking with my OB, and then post-partum and – poof! – it's back to "see ya at your annual Pap smear!" I miss those guys. It was like Cheers, except, not.

Day 30: I just nursed in the car in a Chick-Fil-A parking lot, between two car seats.

Day 30: My firstborn peed on the living-room floor while I was nursing.

Day 30: My firstborn just had a crying fit because I put mustard in his sandwich.

Day 30: The baby won’t go down for a nap.

Day 30: My firstborn won’t go down for a nap.

Day 30: I Skype with my parents. We make plans for their return.

Day 40: Questions that rule my days: Should I eat, sleep or shower? What’s that smell?

Day 43: He smiled! He smiled! The face of a cherub. The face of my father. Wondrous.

Day 47: I put my belly button ring back in, mostly so I could locate my belly button in an emergency.

Day 50: I can wake up with instant lucidity. I can obscure poop and pee stains on clothes with a scarf or baby carrier. I’ve honed the shave, shower and make-up routine

to a lean seven minutes. My hair? Still working on that ...

Day 62: Delirious at 4am, I prayed for Walter White and Jesse Pinkman for a while before I remem-bered they are not real people. Less Netflix. My firstborn and I colored and made bread and hugged. I think we’re pals again.

Day 65: He slept nine hours straight! I think we turned a corner…

Days 66–70: The baby has been nursing every three hours for the last four days. I've gotten quite adept at taking selfies and playing Candy Crush Saga.

Day 87: My hairbrush looks like a woolly mammoth from all the post-partum shedding. I have the tactical advantage of being the only one awake at 3:41am. I get first dibs on my favorite cereal, which I can eat in silence, at my leisure. A rarity.

Day 88: I’m part of a late-night club, but instead of music and drinks there's nursing, texting and Facebook. We mamas commiser-ate in the wee hours over C-section scars, growth spurts and the wonder of this little one growing before our eyes. We also hate on the wenches who lost all their baby weight five hours after delivering.

Day 90: When I watch my husband football-hold the baby … When the baby and firstborn giggle together … When I catch a glimpse of us in the mirror: baby sleeping, nestled in the crook of my neck; me singing, sleepy, smiling … I give thanks. ●
