About the University Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University was established at Lucknow in 1996 as a Central University with the objects of promoting advance knowledge by instructional and research facilities in science, key and frontier areas of technology and other allied disciplines. The main objectives of this university is to promote professional studies, inter-disciplinary studies and research activities. With above objectives, the University has started its academic programmes which have employment potential and relevant for the development of Indian society. At present, University has eight functional Schools comprising of more than forty functional Departments. About the National Seminar According to Hindu Mythology the river Gomti; one of the major tributary of river Ganges is daughter of sage Vashistha. It is believed that bathing in the river Gomti on the 11th day of full moon can wash away one's sin. The river Gomti originates from Gomat taal which was formally known as Fulhaar jheel in Pilibhit district of U.P. The river flowing through the districts of Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Jaunpur, Lucknow,Sultanpur, Barabanki, Faizabad and Ghazipur in Uttar-Pradesh covers a distance of about 730 km before finally merging in the river Ganga at Ghazipur district about 30 km North of Varanasi. The total drainage area of the river is about 30437 km2. An average flow rate of Gomti river is 1500 MLD, however, during the monsoon season it reaches up to 45000 MLD while in summer it falls down to 500 MLD From the years the river is fulfilling most of the agricultural and domestic water need of the cities established on its bank. However, during the past few decades the health of the river Gomti has been deteriorated due to industrial and municipal waste disposal along the whole stretch of the river. The river receives about 450 MLD of untreated domestic waste water only from the Lucknow city. In addition, various miscellaneous sources such as bathing of cattles, washing of clothes, disposal of flowers and idols etc. also pollute the river. Cumulative increase in the pollution load of river has caused loss of aquatic biodiversity. Further, the deterioration in the quality of river water had made it unsuitable for human/animal consumption and other uses such as irrigation, aquaculture and

recreational activities. Perceiving the threat to the river a Gomti Action Plan was formulated jointly by the State and Central government in the year 1993 for 3 towns namely Sultanpur, Jaunpur and Lucknow to rejuvenate the river and to prevent it from further deterioration. Despite several efforts made by both; Central as well as State Government and various Non-Governmental Organizations, the river Gomti is still screaming for its revival. This seminar has been proposed to address the known and hidden issues pertaining to the pollution of river Gomti. This seminar will sought a collective support from the scientists, social scientists and industry representatives for the rejuvenation of river Gomti. Thrust Areas The conference is soliciting opinion on the following areas of interest:

Impact of Urbanization/Industrialization on River Gomti & its tributaries.

Riverinterlinking to rejuvenate river Gomti.

Conservation/restoration strategies for the river Gomti in the era

ofclimate change. Technologies for Conserving Riverine Ecosystem.
