AS208 The Rise of Scientific Europe 1500-1800 Question 1. Question Define the time-span of ancient Greek scientific activity and name the main individuals or groups whom you would expect to see discussed in any survey of Greek science. Answer Greek scientific activity spanned from approximately 600BC to around 200AD. Principle scientific figures and institutions included Aristotle and his Lyceum, Plato and the Academy, Pythagoras and his disciples, the Pythagoreans, and the Ionian philosophers including Thales. Archimedes, Euclid and Ptolemy are also important, together with physicians such as Hippocrates and Galen. The library and museum at Alexander, although Egyptian, were also centres of Greek learning and flourished under the royal patronage of the Ptolemaic (Greek) Pharaohs.
