B.A. ENGLISH LITERATURE

SYLLABUS AND REGULATIONS

UNDER

CHOICE BASED CREDIT SYSTEM (CBCS)

(Those who joined in 2016-2017 and after)

Objectives

The syllabus for B.A English Literature degree course under semester system has been

designed on the basis of Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) which would focus on

job oriented programmes and value added education.

1. To enable students to gain proficiency in the use of English Language.

2. To expose them to the classics in English Literature

3. To enable them to gain a knowledge of the social and literary history of England, the

literary genres, the literary movements, and the various schools of thought in literary criticism.

4. To develop their vocabulary and English language skills so as to enable them to perform

well in competitive examinations, like the Public Service Commission Examinations,

TOFEL & GRE.

5. To enable them to face the challenges in mass media.

6. To enable them to develop their career oriented skills through the Elective Courses.

7. Skill based elective courses and non-major electives will enable the students to have a good

deal of freedom and they will also enable the students to be employable immediately after

the completion of the Degree programme.

Eligibility for Admission

Candidates who have passed +2 Examination conducted by the Board of Higher Secondary

Education, Government of Tamil Nadu, with English as a subject components OR any

other examination accepted by the Syndicate of the Madurai Kamaraj University as equivalent

thereto are eligible to join this course.

Duration of the course

The duration of the course shall be three academic years comprising six semesters with two

semesters in each academic year.

Subjects of study

The main subjects of study offered for B.A (English Literature) Degree Course shall consist

of the following:

Extension activities

Part I and II

Tamil and English Language Courses are 4 each in number.

Part III

The number of the Core Courses shall be 13, the Elective Subjects 3. The Allied Subjects

cover 4 courses.

Part IV

The number of Non Major Elective Courses shall be 2, and that of Skill Based Subjects 6.

Environmental Studies and Value Education Course are 1 each in number.

Part V

These should be carried out outside the class hours. All the students shall have to enroll for

NSS / NCC / Sports & Games or any other service organization in the College and shall have

to earn minimum hours of attendance to be prescribed by the College. A candidate shall be

awarded a maximum of 1 credit for Compulsory Extension Service.

Credits

The term „credit‟ refers to the weightage given to a course, usually in relation to the

Instructional hours assigned to it. The total credits .required for completing B.A (English

Literature) degree course is 140.The particulars of credits for individual components and

courses are presented on Table 1.

Extra Credits Paper:

1. This paper is optional. Students may or may not select this paper. If he/she selects this

paper and if he/she passes the paper, then 2 extra credits will be added in his/her total

credit to the degree, even otherwise, it won‟t affect the completion of degree.

2. The paper is common to all UG Programmes.

3. The title of this paper is “Model Paper for Competitive Examinations”

4. Examination for this paper will be held at the end of the 6th

semester examinations.

5. There is no internal examination and only external examination for this paper.

6. Maximum marks for this paper is 100.

The Scheme of Examination

It is presented on Table 2.

Evaluation

The components for continuous internal assessment are:

Two tests and their average --- 15 marks

Seminar/Group Discussion --- 5 marks

Pattern of the Question Paper (External Examination)

The question paper may have 3 parts.

Duration of the external examination is 3hours.

Part A

Ten questions (Objective type with 4 alternatives) 10 x 1 = 10 marks

(Two questions from each unit – No choice)

Part B

5 x 7 = 35 marks

Five questions („either… or‟ type)

(One pair from each unit)

(Each answer not exceeding two pages)

Part C

Three questions out of five 3 x 10 =30 marks

(One question from each unit)

(Each answer not exceeding four pages)

Minimum Marks for a Pass

1.40% of the aggregate (Internal + External Examinations)

2. No separate pass minimum for the Internal Examinations

3. 27 marks out of 75 is the pass minimum for the External Examinations.

Internal and External Evaluation of NME - Communication Skills- I (Listening and Speaking)

will be done through oral mode (Viva voce) only and for NME - Communication Skills- II (Reading

and Writing) both the evaluations will be done through written mode.
