More than ever, organizations across sectors must be able to empower people to lead with extraordinary poise, heart, and skill. Effective development pipelines are needed globally to ensure that people not only comprehend the practice of leadership, but have the competencies, courage, and adaptability to lead well — with and without authority, across boundaries, and from any political or organizational position. They must know how to tap into others’ aspirations while working with today’s disorienting realities; stay anchored in enduring values while renewing trust; and mobilize stakeholders to work adaptively to build new organizational capacity.

The Art and Practice of Leadership Development is an intensive Harvard Kennedy School executive program led by Ronald Heifetz that provides leadership development professionals, including consultants, trainers, and educators, with a powerful new foundation. Here, you will work closely with experienced colleagues and renowned leadership educators to explore key diagnostic concepts, action strategies, and high-impact leadership development methods. Topics examined will include:

» How do common assumptions about leadership damage organizations and societies around the world?

» How do these assumptions limit the way people learn and practice leadership?

» How should we think about leadership?

» What methods of leadership development have real impact?

CURRICULUM

» What place do values, passion, and character have in leadership development?

» What are the ethics of leadership development, especially when using experiential methods?

Art and Practice of Leadership Development is a highly interactive and experiential program with considerable time dedicated to debriefing and reflection. It will provide you the opportunity to think deeply about your own practices and develop new ways of approaching the complex challenge of strengthening the capacity of others to lead in today’s evolving, interdependent world.

Case in Point Pioneered by Faculty Chair Ronald Heifetz and colleagues, this program introduces teaching and training methods beyond the traditional case method. You will analyze the evolving dynamics of the class itself as a case-in-point for collective learning, problem solving, and change. Taking part in this real-time learning exercise will enable you to investigate the frontiers of your own ability to reflect in action and experience both the “perspirational” and “inspirational” aspects of leadership.

Peer Consultation Groups The program offers unique frameworks for analyzing the diagnostic and action challenges of leadership and leadership development. With the aim of applying these theories to practice, you and your peers will consult with one another about cases from each of your respective professional environments.

Exercises Through structured exercises of reflection and action, some involving poetry and music, you will gain the authoritative, creative, and communication skills integral to the practice of leadership.
