Introduction:
Corporate social responsibility is the responsibility of companies towards society .According to a 1983 UN
report sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs. For companies this includes job creation, innovation in technology, respect for human rights and the environment wherever a company has operations.
Development :
- how can companies be socially responsible- how important is it for a company to be CSR- examples- important for companies to socially responsible and contribute to sustainable development- most corporations include CSR on their agenda as a marketing tool to attract customers- irresponsible practices get bad press and can lead consumers to boycott brands and buy elsewhere- as the article points out: making a profit is important to be able to survive, compete in global
economy, create jobs, innovate
- nevertheless companies should also be respectful of human rights, respect labour laws and offerdecent salaries & working conditions. This is especially important in their operations in developing
countries where they often operate in a lawless environment
- they can also contribute to environmental protection by environmentally- friendly practices (recycling, using renewable energies , ecological building material)
- they can sponsor community projects- they can provide emergency relief or finance projects in developing countries
Examples :
- Heinz built concert hall & football stadium in the city where it has its headquarters, also helpedretirees- Walmart used its high tech logistic and supply chain to provide rapid relief during hurricane Katrina
- Most companies in the automobile industry are trying to develop environmentally-friendly electric orhybrid cars
- oil companies often sponsor projects in developing companies where they operateConclusion :
Very important for companies to be socially responsible and contribute to sustainable development. In order
to do this they have to focus on profit to create jobs, offer products, improve the standard of living ,innovate
and be competitive without sacrificing the welfare of employees or harming the environment and use part of
their profit to contribute to ensure sustainable development for present and future generations.
