Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

WHO'S READY TO GO TO THE HOLY LAND?!

Preliminary planning is underway for a possible parish pilgrimage to

Israel! A few parishioners have expressed an interest, so we'd like to see how

much more interest there is out there. The initial plan is to go early next summer, June 2018, for a ten day

excursion. We will prayerfully visit all of the major holy places around Jerusalem and Galilee. The cost, including all

travel, lodging, and food (except lunches) will likely be somewhere around $3,900 per person. Our weekend associate,

Fr. Mark, would be the spiritual director for this pilgrimage. As you may know, Fr. Mark teaches Scripture at our diocesan

seminary, and he spent a semester living in Israel as part of his studies.

A pilgrimage to the Holy Land is often called "the Fifth Gospel," because it will change the way you read and hear the

Scriptures for the rest of your life. Please email Janet Payton, [email protected], as soon as possible to express

your level of interest in joining this pilgrimage:

• Thinking about it: Not sure if you can go, but would like more information as it arrives

• I'd love to, but...: Very interested in going, but it depends on certain factors

• Sign me up!: Extremely interested; highly likely you'll go

CATHOLIC BUT NOT CONFIRMED?

not been confirmed, consider attending our

five-session confirmation preparation program

beginning this Wednesday, August 30, at

7:00 p.m. Those who participate should be able

to be confirmed at Holy Martyrs on October 1,

2017, at 2 p.m. or the Cathedral of St. John the

Evangelist on May 19, 2018, at 4:30 p.m.

Advance registration is required.

Contact Janet at 330-722-6633 or

[email protected] to register.

An Invitation

In a few weeks our choir will resume

rehearsals and singing weekly at the

9:30am Mass. Have you ever

considered becoming a member of our choir, or could

you share your musical talent as a song leader or

instrumentalist at any of the weekend Masses?

We are looking for new (and returning) singers and

instrumentalists to participate in and enhance our music

ministry. Prior musical experience is a plus but is not a

requirement. All that is needed is a desire to learn and

an enthusiasm to elevate our communal prayer at Mass

through music.

The choir will be hosting a picnic at the pavilion on

the parish grounds this Sunday, August 27 from

1:00-400 pm. All current and former choir members

along with their spouse, as well as those interested

in joining the choir are invited to attend.

For more information feel free to contact our Music

Director, Christopher Ilg at [email protected].

Holy Martyrs Ministry of Assistance will be in

the Gathering Area this weekend after all

Masses to accept your financial and food

donations. However, food donations are

accepted at anytime. Certain staples are always needed, like

pasta and spaghetti sauce, cereal, tuna, peanut butter,

soups, canned vegetables. Checks made out to Holy Martyrs

with Ministry of Assistance (MOA) on the memo line are

always welcome and very much appreciated. Thank you for

helping those in need.

Dear Holy Martyrs Parishioners,

The Ministry of Assistance would like to

thank you for your generous support of

this year’s School Supply Drive for the needy students of

Medina and Highland school districts.

***The difference between this drive and others, like

Stuff the Bus, is that each individual school has

requested particular materials and we fill that order.

They are then delivered to our schools for the teachers

and office personnel to be used when needed.

We were able to help 986 students this year in 14

different schools in our districts that qualify for free and

reduced school meals under the federal program.

Because of you these students will start the year in a

confident and positive way!

God Bless You,

Holy Martyrs MOA

Your efforts made it possible for the

American Red Cross to make

available 16 units of blood for

needed patient care. You inspired 15 people to donate

blood in response to our drive goal of 16 units. Each

donation can help save up to three lives, so your efforts

could impact as many as 48 lives! I hope that everyone

involved in this drive will appreciate this news and we hope

that you share this with your group.

On behalf of the patients whose lives you touched, as well

as their loved ones, we offer our heartfelt gratitude.

10 Things Pope Francis Wants You to Know About the Family (V) (part II)

Children: “Have courage and go forward”

Pope Francis continues his conversation with the children of the world. “In bringing about harmony one must see; conflict,

to be well undertaken, must be oriented toward unity. In society like yours that has one culture with many diverse cultures

inside it, you have to search for unity but with respect for each identity. Conflicts resolve themselves in respecting

identities.

In a general weekly audience in St. Peter’s Square on March 18, 2015, Francis said that adults have many things to learn

from children—from how to give emotion to how to see each person as part of the community.

In themselves, children have a richness for humanity and also for the Church because they recall to us constantly the

necessary condition to enter the reign of God: That of not considering ourselves self-sufficient, but in need of help, of

love, of pardon,” said the pontiff.

Francis said, “Children have two basic things to teach adults: How to laugh and how to cry. We have to ask ourselves:

Do I smile spontaneously, with freshness, with love, or is my smile artificial? Do I still cry, or have I lost the ability to cry?”

“God is present. And there are many signs of hope for going forward. Have courage and go forward!”

• Delivered Thanksgiving food baskets to 32 local families in need including 51 adults and 65 children. For Christmas,

provided 39 food baskets for 62 adults and 85 children.

• Collected more than 1,000 Christmas gifts and gift cards from parishioners as well as hundreds of toys donated by

our PSR students. Gifts and gift cards were distributed to families of Holy Martyrs’ parish, our sister parish La Sagrada

Familia, Medina community families, women and children of the Battered Women’s Shelter, St. Augustine’s Church

families, Birthcare of Medina, Toys for Tots, and Community Services of Medina.

Without the kind and generous support from you, our parishioners, and a limited number of local businesses none

of this could have been accomplished.

Sincere thanks to all our parishioners and business donors for being so kind and giving.
