The youngsters tried to subside the heat by munching on sno-cones provided by the National Guard. Sponsored by the Brownsville- Haywood County Chamber of Commerce, the annual, free event was certainly a day for our local youth. The day also offered popcorn, cokes, hotdogs, and candy galore as kids jumped from station to station to see what was in store next. Volunteer Park provided a carnival-like setting with ample for everyone to sprawl, along with a few shady spots on the somewhat blistering July day. Kid’s Day is the brainchild of Chamber Director Joe Ing who before taking the position, voiced he wanted one day set aside for the kids. Highly favored by everyone bar-none were the water-filled bouncy slides, as they slipped and slid washing off remnants of sno-cone stains. Concluding her day of fun, one attendee simply smiled and said, “it was perfect.” Mayors Jo Matherne and Franklin Smith along with Sheriff Melvin Bond take advantage of the event to show they really are ‘children at heart.’ The fun-filled day was due largely in part to Chamber director Joe Ing and assistant Marty Williams as they help organize the free event every year. At Left: Haywood Parks and Rec. director Nancy Cates took time out of volunteering for a quick shot with the kids, themed in red.
