Haywood County’s first scrimmage game of the year was Friday night against Munford as the Tomcats edged over their competition 14-13. The Tomcats received the opening kickoff and looked good across the board with offense, defense and an improved special teams unit. Despite the sweltering heat that delayed the kickoff by close to 30 minutes, the team showed great enthusiasm and coaching that lead to some early big plays. The home crowd present and the team received a scare on the opening carry of the game by Terry Grandberry as he was tackled on a 4 yard gain and had to have the trainers come look at him on the field. He was helped off the field and was kept out as precautionary measures for the rest of the game. The Tomcats special teams recorded a blocked punt by Anthony Boyd that set up a touchdown pass to George McCray in the corner of the end zone. The second half was equally exciting as Justice Brown scored a touchdown to put Haywood ahead. The Tomcat defense kept Munford at bay until a penalty that led to a hook and ladder play that went for six to tie the game with no time remaining in the game. Munford went for two to win the game but the Tomcat defense stood strong and shut them down at the goal line. The crowd was very enthusiastic about the game and it was a glimpse of what is to come with the team. Tomcats earn win in jamboree .
