The first thing you may be asking yourself is: who is Barratt? Well, you might not necessarily know us by name, but the chances are you’ve probably walked right past us on more than one occasion. That’s because we’re Britain’s largest homebuilder, and since 1958 we’ve been building homes all over the country – over 400,000 of them to be a little more precise.

We’re looking for people like you to help us grow, develop and reach new heights. That’s why we created our Apprenticeship Programme.

It’s a fantastic way to learn about the industry and open the door to a world of future career opportunities. What’s more, you’ll get to develop new skills while securing nationally recognised qualifications.

We’re exceptionally proud of what we do, how we do it and who we are. But it’s nothing compared to the pride we have for our people. They’re the ones who have truly helped us to become the UK’s biggest housebuilder.

They’re the reason why we secured more awards for quality workmanship than any other housebuilder at the NHBC ‘Pride in the Job’ awards. They’re the reason we’ve led the industry for 10 consecutive years. And they’re the reason why we’ve remained a 5 star housebuilder for the last six years running. Join us and you could be the reason why we stay the best.

AN EXCITING FUTURE AWAITSThere are currently 2.9 million jobs in the Construction Industry – roughly 10% of all jobs in the UK – and that figure is set to rise.

What’s more, demand for new homes means that now is a perfect time to build the career that you’ve always wanted. So if you’re looking for a place where you can embark on a career that’s filled with opportunities and where you’re supported every step of the way – then welcome home.

Laying the foundations for a great career. If you’ve got passion, ambition and determination to succeed then we can give you the opportunity to shine. Why choose between a university/college education, or paid employment when you can have the best of both worlds? With a Barratt apprenticeship you’ll not only get to work towards industry-recognised qualifications, you’ll also get to experience practical on-the-job training with plenty of support and you’ll get paid for it!

Our Apprenticeship Programmes are run in partnership with CITB, the Sector Skills Council for Construction. It offers both formal and on-site training with experienced trade specialists, and programmes which go well beyond the standard S/NVQ syllabus.

You’ll combine professional training, both in and out of the classroom, with industry-recognised qualifications. Your development will be overseen individually by one of our Directors, showing you just how seriously we take supporting your training.

Many of our Site Managers and Divisional Directors started their careers as an apprentice – some are now at the top as Managing Directors of Divisions.

With hard work and energy you could be in that position long before your friends at university ever will be and you won’t have a massive debt to pay back either!

And it doesn’t stop once your apprenticeship is finished, there are plenty more options to choose from on our various programmes.

From apprentice through to management. Before we tell you about our programmes why don’t you hear from our current apprentices and from people who’ve been through the programme and are now in management.

KEVIN URQUHARTCONSTRUCTION MANAGER, SCOTLAND

Kevin started out as an Apprentice Joiner and with hard work and the right training he successfully worked his way up through the business and currently forms part of the Senior Management Team in the North Scotland division.

Kevin completed a four-year apprenticeship alongside a HNC in Construction Practice before continuing to work for a further two years in the industry where he decided he wanted to work in management. He became an Assistant Site Manager, for two years, before becoming a Site Manager. Working his way up the career ladder and completing more qualifications, with the help of Barratt, he’s now the Construction Manager in North Scotland in charge of 12 developments.

“Barratt has given me the opportunity to further my career in the industry from apprenticeship to senior management within a forward thinking company and a positive and fair employer”.

BEN STEWARTCONTRACTS MANAGER, SCOTLAND

“I joined the Barratt Homes apprentice programme straight from school. I completed an ONC, HNC and then a Degree in Construction Management. In 1999 I was promoted to Setting Out Engineer and again in 2001 to Site Manager.

During my role as Site Manager in 2006 I won an NHBC ‘Pride in the Job’ award. In 2006 I was promoted to Contracts Manager and I manage a team of Site Managers over various developments. Barratt have always given me the support and training to advance my career”.

STUART TAYLORAPPRENTICE JOINER

“I’m currently in my first year of the apprenticeship programme and am rotating between classroom and workshop-based sessions at College and time on site at Barratt. I’ve been working on roughing and finishing joinery and I’ve learnt a huge variety of skills already.

I’ve felt really well supported from day one with Barratt Homes; staff on site and in the office have been really welcoming, and I know I’ll learn a lot from them throughout the course of the apprenticeship”.

GARY OWENSAPPRENTICE JOINER

“I’m currently in my first year on the apprenticeship programme, having started earlier this year, and already I’ve become familiar with a number of the different stages of house building. I have worked on first and second fixes, and in particular enjoyed cutting and fitting skirting, ironmongery and hanging doors. I’ve been made to feel really welcome by all the team on my site and have learned a great deal from them.

The apprenticeship is four years long in total, and throughout that time I’ll also be attending college to supplement the practical side of things with classroom-based learning. Further down the line I’d like to progress to management by training to become an Assistant Site Manager.”

ROSS BLACKSITE MANAGER, SCOTLAND

“This was a role which I had never even heard of let alone considered as a career! The potential in the role appealed to me as well as the success of previous people that had followed that path, so I accepted without hesitation when the offer came through”.

Ross gained some valuable experience from other Managers and Contracts Managers who he worked with and went on to complete various academic qualifications which were funded by Barratt whilst training as Assistant Site Manager. He’s now Site Manager on one of our largest Aberdeen developments.

“I hope that now I can pass on my experiences and what I have learnt to new apprentices to make sure that they fulfil their ambitions with their careers with Barratt Homes”.

CRAIG MACLEANASSISTANT SITE MANAGER, SCOTLAND

“I joined Barratt as a Building Technician in 2007. During my training, I achieved a HNC in Building Technology at College, I then went on to successfully complete a BSc in Construction, Design and Management.

I gained a huge amount of experience and knowledge from various Site Managers and Contracts Managers I have worked under whilst at Barratt”.

APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR - JAMIE JOHNSTONEAPPRENTICE JOINER (3RD YEAR)

Jamie won the Apprentice of the Year Award in 2014 and, in his words, it was one of the proudest moments of 2014.

“It’s great to have an apprenticeship with a company that has so much experience. Time spent at college is valuable too and the support provided by Barratt throughout the apprentice programme is fantastic.

I would recommend Barratt to anyone looking for an apprenticeship. Once you are qualified you have the opportunity to move onto their Academy training programme to become an Assistant Site Manager, and perhaps in years to come the next Construction Director! The opportunities available are second to none”.

CONOR DICKIEAPPRENTICE PLUMBER, SCOTLAND

It’s not only the apprentices that think our scheme is good; their parents do too. Conor Dickie is training as a plumber and his parents think it’s a great opportunity for him to learn new skills, here’s what they said:

“Our son Conor had work experience within the draughtsman’s office of an oil company and on completion of this he felt he would prefer a more practical and hands on job.

In the school holidays he volunteered to work with a local plumber and it was from there he decided to apply for an apprenticeship with Barratt Homes. Since joining the company he has had the opportunity to learn new skills whilst working on site and gain qualifications at college too”.
