later it had bought the company. This acquisition brought crop storage floors, agricultural buildings, cubicle housing and golf driving ranges to the SVW portfolio.

After the acquisition of Challow, Welvent, a competitor in the crop storage sector, approached the company to become their manufacturer. SVW are still manufacturing for them to this day.

In the early 1990’s SVW were approached by Permacrib to supply components for earth retaining systems. This continues to be an important part of the SVW business.

First established in 1970, Severn Valley Woodworks Limited is today recognised as one of the leading suppliers of quality timber and timber products.

Beginning life as a small coffin manufacturer, SVW moved into pallet making with Heinz as their main customer. This business continued to grow, developing into supplying pallets, packaging cases and timbers to blue chip manufacturers including IBM, Hewlett Packard, Fuji and the Ministry of Defence. As these companies moved their businesses away from the UK, Severn Valley Woodworks was approached by British Coal to supply hardwood timber dowels and plywood pads. This grew into a multi-million pound business which unfortunately came to an abrupt end with the miners’ strike in the mid-eighties.

Around the same time SVW manufactured its first grain floor for its then customer, Challow Agricultural Products, two years

In 1999, SVW acquired Lingward, a competitor in the crop storage sector. Today SVW are by far the largest supplier of crop storage systems, manufacturing in excess of 70% of the current market demand.

In 2003 SVW acquired Hutton Garden Products with its range of oak barrels, bird tables, planters and reconditioned plastics and has since expanded the range to include a wide selection of British manufactured garden furniture.

Severn Valley moved to its current seven hectare site at Northwood Green in 2000. Following the investment in five new moulding lines SVW has grown into one of the largest suppliers of machined and pressure treated softwood to timber merchants.

At the end of 2007 a further manufacturing site was established in Lydney.

From humble beginnings SVW has grown in to a sizeable operation, manufacturing and supplying the most diverse of product ranges.

Timber is our most environmentally sound construction material.

Severn Valley Woodworks source its timbers from well managed and responsible suppliers who are committed to active replantation programmes in the forests they harvest. The European timber industry, which supplies the overwhelming majority of our timber, has overseen a steady expansion of Europe’s forests over the past 60 years. Between 1990 and 2000 the European forest area grew by 30% and this growth continues, as only 65% of the annual growth is harvested.

The industrial preservative pre-treatments of the majority of our timbers help to ensure they will have the longest service life possible to protect against all forms of fungal and insect attack. The latest generation of wood preservative we utilise, Tanalith® E, is based on copper triazole technology. The copper is derived from recycled resources and is combined with dual biodegradable triazoles, that are commonly used to protect many of the food crops we eat.

“Wood plays a major role in combating climate change... Greater use of wood products will stimulate the expansion of Europe’s forests and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by substituting for fossil fuel intensive products.”

European Commission’s DG Enterprise.

SOURCING TIMBER

Severn Valley Woodworks operate in partnership with Swedish, Finnish and Russian saw-milling companies.

Our supply base has an annual production capacity of over one million cubic metres split between spruce and pine.

Buying from Sweden, Finland and Russia allows us to maintain a regular supply of quality redwood and minimise the impact of unfavourable exchange rates to timber pricing.

We strive to play our full part in achieving vertical integration from forest to end user with the aim of maximising all the benefits available for our customers.

best choice for the environmentCHAIN OF CUSTODY

Forest Certification is a mechanism for managing our forests within the principles of sustainable development. The two main international schemes are FSC® and PEFC. Chain of Custody is the paperwork flow through the chain, from the forest to the final retailer or merchant to prove that the timber in the product is derived from well-managed resources. To claim that the timber is certified all links in the chain from the forest through to the application have to have an audited Chain of Custody process. The company has to show traceability, which means it can identify and track certified timber through its operations. It can also be used to provide traceability for schemes which verify that the wood comes from legal sources. Severn Valley Woodworks Ltd holds chain of custody for both FSC® and PEFC schemes.

AUTO-TREATER COMPUTERISED PLANT CONTROL The day to day control of our timber treatment operations is fully automated, providing a wide range of advantages – improvements in health and safety, greater production efficiency, accurate measurement of preservative uptakes and significant cost savings, which we then pass on to our customers.

USE CLASSES USE CLASS TYPICAL SITUATION

1 Internal building timbers with no risk of wetting or condensation.

2 Internal building timbers with a risk of wetting or condensation.

3 External building, fencing and landscaping timbers used out of ground contact.

4 External building, fencing and landscaping timbers used in ground contact.

Use Classes are defined by British and European Standards, providing a guide to the risk of decay and insect attack to timber components, depending upon their end use. The higher the Use Class, the higher the level of preservative protection required. SVW treat all our timbers to meet either Use Class 3 or 4.

To help ensure a long term performance most of our softwood is pressure treated as standard although untreated material can also be supplied.

We can also offer service treatments for customers own materials.

Within our pre-treatment operation we utilise the latest generation, environmentally advanced timber preservative – TANALITH® E.

This renowned preservative gives a proven, outstanding performance, particularly for timbers intended for use in ground contact applications.

From our three on-site treatment plants, with a capacity to treat around 200m3 of timber per day, we can offer a choice of traditional pale green coloured TANALISED® treated timber or, alternatively, a rich brown coloured TANATONE® treated timber, ideal for fencing and landscaping applications.

preservative treatmentTimber loaded into treatment vessel. Initial vacuum applied and the timber cells are evacuated of air. Vacuum held.

Cylinder flooded under vacuum with TANALITH® E wood preservative with TANATONE® brown colourant if required.

Hydraulic pressure applied, forcing the preservative deep into the structure of the timber.

Final vacuum extracts excess preservative solution, which is pumped back to storage.

Low pressure inside timber draws in surface solution when vented to atmosphere. Treated timber is left to dry.

Warranty DetailsCovered is the cost of re-supply by Severn Valley Woodworks, or the re-supply by Severn Valley Woodworks (at our option), of a component that is proven to have failed as a result of fungal decay or insect attack within a 15 year period from the initial purchase. It does not cover the costs of removal or reinstatement of such components or consequential costs or loss due to failure of the component.

The term ‘fungal decay’ as used in the warranty refers to wood destroying fungi that feed on and degenerate the wood cell walls. It excludes staining and mould fungi associated with the weathering of wood.

The term ‘insect attack’ refers to attack by wood digesting insects that destroy the timber structure.

The term ‘failure’ refers to damage caused by insects and/or fungi to such an extent that the component is no longer fit for purpose.

This warranty does not affect the statutory rights of consumers.

TIMBER FRAMED BUILDINGS FROM SEVERN VALLEY WOODWORKS

Considerable investment in plant and machinery has been made to our production capability which includes the Hundegger K2 milling machine. This machine operates using industry leading software from which all the building CAD design is created.

Each bespoke component is manufactured using the K2’s extensive design features from drilling, notching, morticing, tenoning. The finished components are then delivered to site where the customer can then begin the build.

Severn Valley Woodworks manufactures a wide and varied range of timber frame buildings, these include traditional homes, eco-builds, cart sheds, garages and log cabins, all produced from a complete range of timber materials, Softwood, Oak, Douglas fir, I beams through to Glulam beams.

We work closely with an independent design company and several key customers who design and bring the building to a manufacturing point, we then produce the components and draw all the building materials together.

With the development of effective preservative treatments, timber can have a greatly extended service life, even when exposed to the harshest of weather conditions.

The majority of timbers used in our Challow buildings are pressure pre-treated with the latest generation of wood preservative to give ourselves and our customers a real confidence in their long term performance.

Finally, and probably most important of all, timber buildings are more cost effective to construct.

CHALLOW® QUALITY TIMBER STRUCTURES

Timber is such a plentiful and versatile construction material that allows manufacturing and construction flexibility as well as having real benefits over man-made alternatives.Firstly, timber has a natural warmth and beauty that provides a real aesthetic advantage when compared to conventional block or brick structures. The timbers we use are from slower grown trees, producing a dense make up with excellent straight grain. Any splitting and distortion is minimised, allowing your timber buildings to keep their natural good looks for decades.

Environmentally, timber is also the best choice for us all. The great majority of Europe’s forests are now sustainably managed and growing in size, supplying high quality softwood timbers in a responsible manner.

As a building material wood has the lowest energy consumption in its production as well as the lowest carbon dioxide emission. Timber buildings act as a ‘carbon sink’, actually locking in CO2 into their structure.

Wood has a superb natural thermal efficiency which increases with the thickness of the timber, reducing the cost of heating and insulation materials in a building.

Timber is very strong. In relation to its weight, timber is stronger than any other building material, producing lighter buildings and simpler foundations.

why timber

Timber offers a 30% more predictable construction time than block or brick work and being relatively light in weight, provides reduced transport costs.

Timber is the natural, high performance and affordable choice for your next building.

The roof is available in a choice of materials including traditional felt or high specification slate or cedar shingles.

Double glazed and joinery finished timber doors and windows make sure each cabin design is thermally efficient yet keeps the natural beauty of wood.

A welcome addition to our range of timber buildings, this stylish timber framed garage incorporates a substantial loft facility.

The design creates four 3m ground floor bays, one with robust timber doors. The external stairway which leads to the loft can help create an ideal office area or the loft space can simply be used for storage.

All the structural and external cladding timbers are pressure preservative treated to ensure a long and low maintenance service life and the roof material is hard wearing, reconstituted slate and incorporates three skylight windows, together with all the necessary PVC guttering and downpipes.

CHALLOW® QUALITY TIMBER STRUCTURES

Initially the colour of the treated timber will be a natural pale green. Upon exposure this green colour slowly weathers to a warm honey brown and in the longer term becomes a natural silver grey.

Although treated timber can be decorated if desired, it does not have to be painted or stained to maintain its preservative properties. If treated timbers are to be painted, stained or varnished we would always recommend a high quality, high performance coating.

Always consult the coating manufacturer recommendations before applying a coating product to pressure treated timber and follow the manufacturer’s instructions, taking note of the recommended maximum moisture content of the timber and subsequent maintenance cycles. Before applying a coating, the treated timber should be dried throughout the cross section.

If water based coatings are applied, some discolouration may occur in exceptional circumstances. If this happens, allow the coating to dry completely. Then apply an additional coat of product, preferably one with a high build, high solids content.

PLANNING APPROVALMany kinds of buildings and structures can be built without the need for planning permission. However, because the planning rules and regulations are continually reviewed, in the first instance we would strongly recommend contacting your local planning department. They will be able to advise if you are permitted to build a structure without permission or what procedures must be followed if permission is required.

MAINTENANCE AND DECORATIONTreated TimbersThe majority of external timbers used in the design of Challow buildings are preservative pressure pre-treated to ensure a long term protection against all forms of wood decay and insect attack and provide a greatly extended service life for the building.

log buildings - general informationIf any cuts or notches are made to any of the treated timbers of the buildings, the area of timber revealed must be

liberally brushed with a suitable end grain preservative, such as Ensele, to maintain the integrity of the preservative protection. Always follow the instructions on the can.

Untreated TimbersSome external timbers in Challow buildings are supplied untreated, for instance doors and windows and Log Cabin profiles. In these circumstances we would recommend the application of a high quality, high performance decorative coating, preferably with a high build, high solids content. Always consult the coating manufacturer recommendations on application and subsequent maintenance.

Metal Fixings and FasteningsBecause the treated timber used in Challow buildings has a long life expectancy we use metal fixings and fastenings that have a comparable length of life and will not require maintenance.

Roof MaterialsRoofs should be checked on a regular basis to confirm that no movement or damage to the materials have been caused by the weather or physical damage. Any damage should be repaired as soon as possible.

Gutterings and DownpipesThe drainage systems used on Challow buildings are all PVC based. Regular checks should be made for cracks and joint breakages and repaired as soon as possible. Regular checks should also be made to ensure there are no blockages within the guttering and downpipes.

• All components are manufactured in our own factory and are produced in palletised sections that screw together on site. This drastically cuts the on-site installation time and allows for ease of maintenance and re-location at a later date if required.

• The Challow system also offers the further benefit of choice in design detail. They are the only company that offers the option of a folded mesh in lieu of a flat mesh insert. This design produces a near flush surface which means minimal sweeping is required to clean between crops. To achieve this feature without impacting on the strength, the floor plates are profiled to a unique section and the expanded metal inserts are pressed to suit. These features make it our most popular floor design.

TIMBER GRADINGThe grading of timber considers the size, quality and condition of a piece of timber at the time of the original inspection.

There are two fundamental types of grading - mechanical and visual:

MechanicalMechanical grading is employed when we try to determine the strength characteristics of a piece of timber. This is usually done by measuring the stiffness of the timber when a load is applied to it by a strength grading machine.

The need to assess the strength of a piece of timber is usually required where timber is to be used in a constructional or load bearing capacity, such as the manufacture of roof trusses.

VisualVisual grading is a judgement of the timber’s appearance and suitability for its end use, considering both the natural characteristics and manufacturing imperfections of each piece.

Visual grading is used to determine grades for constructional use, although it is more usually used to determine the grade based on appearance.

The grade classification for the appearance of the timber is generally determined in the country of origin (see Timber Supply) and varies from species to species.

TIMBER SUPPLY Severn Valley Woodworks utilise only quality timbers from both Russian and Scandinavian sources.

Russian Softwoods The visual grade of Russian softwoods is determined by a complex set of grading rules. The grade is determined by occurrence of defects and also by the general appearance of the piece of timber.

introduction to timberThe main commercial grades imported into the UK from Russia are as follows:Unsorted Grade (Grades 1-3)Fourth Grade Fifth Grade

Scandinavian Softwoods The main commercial grades imported into the UK from Scandinavia are as follows:Unsorted Grade (Grades 1-4)Sawfalling Excluding Sixths (Grades 1-5)Fifths Grade Sixths Grade

In the unsorted grade, greater notice is taken of the defects to the better face and to the fact that edge defects are more decisive than the face defects in determining the grade.

Where defects occur close together on a piece, particularly with knots, the size and quantity of the allowable defects must be less than would otherwise be allowed and the general impression of the cluster of defects must be the basis for determining the grade. Defects that occur in the middle part of a piece are likely to be of greater influence on the grade than defects on the ends.

This guide is not intended to be definitive and in the case of any dispute, reference should be made to the appropriate grading rules as a matter of course.

Timber DefectsDefects in timber are classified into two main groups, as follows:

Defects in Quality i. Structure - comprising of knots, pitch

pockets, bark pockets, compression wood, pitch wood, interlocking grain, cross grain, water wood streak, scars, rot, insect damage.

ii. Manufacture - these arise in the course of production of the sawn timber. These comprise wane, wrong measure and other manufacture defects.

iii. Shakes, Checks, and Splits - are of three different kinds – heart shakes, ring shakes

and seasoning checks and splits that occur during the seasoning of sawn timber. With checks and splits they are measured by lengths and depth with particular regard for their width.

iv. Deformities - include twist, cupping, bowing and springing.

Defects in Condition i. Moisture - where the moisture content of the

timber is not as stipulated in the contract and the timber cannot be considered properly seasoned.

ii. Blue - a decolouration penetrating the sapwood caused by fungi. There are two types; log blue present in the log before it is sawn, yard and kiln blue colour after sawing.

iii. Other discolouration - surface colour changes can take place during drying and storing.

Some of the key timber defects are as follows:ShakeIs a lengthwise separation of the wood which usually occurs between or through the rings of annual growth.

Split Is a separation of the wood due to tearing apart of wood cells. Split is usually due to large variations in temperature.

Stain Is a marked variation from the natural colour of the wood. Natural colour will be uniformly distributed through certain annual rings, whereas stains are usually in irregular patches. Stained wood does not reduce the strength of the piece but may be undesirable where appearance grade timber is required. Stain is usually brown or blue.

Mould A fine vegetable growth, or mildew, that forms on wood in damp stagnant atmospheres. It is the least harmful type of fungus and is usually confined to the surface of wood.

Wane Bark or lack of wood on the edge or corner of a piece of timber.

Weathering Resisting alternate wet and dry conditions. Chemical and mechanical decolouration and disintegration of wood surfaces occur due to exposure to weather, dust, light. Also fibre change may occur due to varied moisture content.

TIMBER TYPES AND STRUCTURESoftwoods Conventional term used to denote the timber from trees belonging to the botanical group, the Gymnosperms. Commercial timbers of this group are practically confined to the class of Coniferae, or Conifers.

Hardwoods General term used to denote the timber from trees belonging to the botanical group, the Angiosperms. Hardwood timbers are generally from slow grown, broad leafed species.

HeartwoodA term applied to the central portion of a log including the pith and the adjacent wood which may be defective.

Sapwood Sapwood is the outer layers of growth between the bark and the heartwood. The outer two to three inches of the sapwood is the living fibre actively involved in growth. The sapwood is the portion of the tree that is most susceptible to stain. Bright sapwood shows no stain and is not limited in any grade, except as specifically provided.

Annual ring of growth (measurement of)An average number of annual rings at either one end of a piece of timber, over a 3” line. The line is usually measured along the centre three inches of the longest radial line that can be drawn along the piece of timber.

TIMBER MOISTURE CONTENT AND DRYING Timber is “hygroscopic”. This means it will take in and give up moisture depending on the condition in which it is placed. It is therefore most important that we have timber at the right “moisture content” before it is put in-situ. The “moisture content” is the weight of water in the wood expressed as a percentage of the weight of oven dry wood. The “moisture content” of dry wood should range from 14% to 20%.

Why do we dry timber?Look at any felled tree and the first thing you notice is how wet it is. When it is sawn and is still wet, it will not twist, warp or bend. If you manufacture anything from wet timber, there is a very good chance it will become distorted, shrink, split and generally be unusable. When you dry timber these problems are minimised.

By drying timber in a correct manner, tension within the timber, which can cause many defects, is relieved, and we create timber that is ready for the manufacturing process.

There are several advantages to using dry timber. It is stronger and holds nails better than green timber; it is more stable and also minimises future warping; it is less subject to stain, decay and insect attack and is easier to paint and treat with preservatives.

Air Drying This is carried out by stacking pieces of timber on top of each other, separated by lathes or sticks to allow air to circulate. Alternatively, it can be achieved by placing timbers at right angles to each other, creating gaps for air circulation. This method of drying can take some considerable time.

Kiln DryingThis is the method used to speed up the drying process using a kilning chamber or de-humidifier.

TIMBER DURABILITYDurability is an important consideration when specifying timber. The sapwood of most timbers is considered perishable and therefore assessments of the natural durability of any species of timber is based on its heartwood.

The basic classifications of durability are as follows:

Perishable - Less than 5 years when in contact with the ground.

Non durable - 5-10 years when in contact with the ground.

Moderately durable - 10-15 years when in contact with the ground.

Durable - 15-25 years when in contact with the ground.

Very durable - More than 25 years when in contact with the ground.

All the tests refer to heartwood stakes of 50mm x 50mm section driven in the ground.

Because the softwood timbers we utilise contain considerable amounts of sapwood, Severn Valley Woodworks pressure preservative pre-treat our timbers to help ensure they have low maintenance and a long service life.

GENERAL TIMBER TERMSQuarter Sawn Otherwise known as Rift Sawn. Timbers cut radially from the log, which gives a vertical edge of straight grained appearance.

Hit or MissMeans the piece of timber after machining may be completely surfaced, partly surfaced or entirely rough, depending upon the accuracy of the machining.
