Most countries have a national day. In

England it is April 23rd – this is St George’s

Day. St George is the patron saint of

England, but not many people celebrate his

day. The national day in Wales is St David’s

Day on March 1st. It is a very important day

for Welsh people. At schools there are lessons

only in the mornings, and in the afternoon

schools organize concerts. Children wear

traditional red, white and black clothes and a

yellow flower called a daffodil for the concert.

But who was St David? He was probably born

at the end of the fifth century in the west of

Wales. David lived a very simple life – for

example, he only ate bread and vegetables

and he never ate meat or fish. He said, ‘Often

the small things in life are important.’

Who thinks today’s teenagers are worse

than their parents’ generation? A

survey for a British magazine has some

good news for mums and dads: their

children actually want to help in the house

and like doing housework! The magazine

spoke to 350 teenagers aged between 13 and

16. More than 200 said they ’often’ helped

in the house. 85% said they always made

their own bed. The most popular activities

included washing the car, helping in the

garden, and doing the washing-up. Last on

the list was doing the ironing (3%). Nearly

a quarter said they sometimes helped do the

cooking. Most identified cleaning their

rooms as very important because ’parents

get angry when rooms are untidy’.

The survey found a difference between

teenagers in the north and south of the

country. Teenagers in the north said they

usually help their parents more than four

times a week. In the south, it was only two

or three times a week.
