Just south of the Tropic of Cancer lie St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix. With the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south, the U.S. Virgin Islands enjoys beautiful weather

year-round. Trade winds from Portugal keep the average temperature range between 77º in the winter and 82º in the middle of summer, which makes almost any day a perfect day for a swim at the beach.

On behalf of the people and Government of the United States Virgin Islands, I welcome you to our islands and our home. We take great pride in the history, culture and beauty that surround us in paradise, and we enjoy sharing it with others. It has been my pleasure to talk with many travelers and listen to their experiences and stories about their fantastic visits territorywide.

There are so many wonderful opportunities for sightseeing, relaxing, shopping and enjoying oneself in our beautiful tropical islands. I enjoy hearing about a family’s adventures kayaking together around one of our bays, a couple watching a sunset together on the beach or a group of friends shopping in town or touring one of our historic monuments. I know the magic of these islands, and it gives me great pleasure when others discover it.

We are happy to be the chosen destination of so many travelers, whether Caribbean or from other locations near and far worldwide. As a Territory of the United States, we are uniquely able to offer all the exotic flavors of the Caribbean with the assuring familiarity of the United States. In the USVI, U.S. Citizens don’t even need to bring a passport. Only a smile is required. I hope I have the chance to welcome you to our islands and that your experience here will bring you back again and again.

Cordially,

John P. de Jongh, Jr.Governor

Over the years, tribes, explorers, pirates, kings and queens have all sought the natural splendor of the U.S. Virgin Islands. From the time Christopher Columbus arrived, seven different nations have governed our land, leaving their influence in customs, architecture, art, music and cuisine. On March 31, 1917, the islands officially became a part of the United States. The result is a people with a tapestry of backgrounds. The one thing you’ll find they all have in common is a love for the place they call home and an eagerness to share it with everyone else.

ICH HISTORY

The United States Virgin Islands is a world leader in developing tourism that protects the natural beauty of the environment while allowing visitors to enjoy all its pristine wonder. Whether hiking on St. John’s 11,500-plus acres of protected natural park, kayaking through St. Thomas’ Marine Sanctuary and Mangrove Lagoon or traveling by horseback over St. Croix’s rolling green hills, the islands offer plenty of ways the environmentally conscious traveler can interact with the tropical environment while preserving it.

ATURAL WONDERS

NDER THE SEAJust below the surface of one exotic world lies another. The beautiful waters that surround the USVI provide excellent dives for both beginner and experienced divers. Fill your logbook with wall, wreck and reef dives done by boat or from the shore. Swim shoulder to shoulder with the turtles, rays, eels and sea horses. And do it all with the added safety of being in U.S. waters, under the strict control of the U.S. Coast Guard.

When you’re surrounded by exotic views, it’s hard to keep your eye on the ball. The USVI, however, attracts golfers of every level who want to test their skills on the islands’ four coastal courses. On St. Thomas, Mahogany Run’s golf course has been called “the 18 most challenging holes in the Caribbean.” On St. Croix, The Buccaneer, Carambola and The Reef offer golfers three great courses with rolling fairways, natural water hazards and tropical foliage. In the USVI, you can enjoy the sands on the beach and enjoy avoiding them on the course.

HOTS BY THE SEA

Page 4: B EAUTY & THE BEACH · 2019-04-25 · recommendation for your level of expertise from a local dive shop. DAY 3: Serene Swim - Catch a sailboat out to Buck Island Reef National Monument.

With beautiful weather, warm waters and sunny skies, the USVI is perfect for any outdoor sport. In addition to golf and tennis, visitors can participate in everything from mountain biking to beach volleyball. Popular water sports include fishing, sailing and windsurfing. Even the most energetic visitors will have a hard time doing it all. In fact, the only limit to the activities in the USVI is your own endurance.

HE ACTIVE TOURIST

REASURE HUNTINGIn the 1500s, pirates might have looked for hidden bounty around the U.S. Virgin Islands. Today, however, treasure hunters will have more luck in the islands’ many shopping centers. Because it’s a duty-free destination, bargain seekers come for the great deals. Gems, watches, cameras, crystal, china, fabrics, liquor and other items can all be found at up to 40% off mainland prices. These prices have earned the USVI the reputation as “The Shopping Mecca of the Caribbean.”

SLAND FLAVORSOver the years, the spices and textures of the East Indies, Africa and Europe have blended to create the distinct flavors of the United States Virgin Islands. From conch patés to wahoo to the sour sop ice cream, the food here is as unique as the islands themselves. It’s just one more way you can explore the islands on your vacation.

SLAND ROMANCEA stroll along a white sand beach is always better when shared with someone you love. Whether you’re planning your wedding, honeymoon or a romantic getaway, the U.S. Virgin Islands offers a far-off setting where you can get closer together. Whether you want to walk down the aisle in one of our historic churches or simply sit together under the blanket of a Caribbean sunset, you can find the perfect setting for your next love story.

Music is the pulse of our islands. The sounds of calypso, reggae and quelbé music float through the air. This is especially true during our festivals. The Crucian Christmas Festival, St. John’s Celebration and, of course, the Virgin Islands Carnival bring new and exciting food, performances, parades and colorful costumes. These local island events are also your chance to spot a colorful Mocko Jumbie, or “elevated spirit,” a traditional stilt-walker dressed in colorful silks and rumored to bring good luck.
