BRIEFING 7 December 2020
RFS Cadets
Braidwood Central School and the Rural Fire Service have been running
the RFS cadet program together for 14 years. This year another group of
Year 9 students have had an amazing and valuable experience learning
new skills which will last them a lifetime. The program provides our Year
9 students with an insight into fire safety and prevention, whilst
developing practical life skills and a general appreciation of community
service and volunteerism. On Monday, the RFS cadets started their week
in a different classroom and different uniform. They discussed some the
theory behind fire before some hands-on activities in the afternoon.
Wednesday included visitors from the local NSW Ambulance service and
NSW Fire and Rescue, with crews showing the students some of the
equipment they use on the job. Goetz Graf, the RFS Chief
Superintendent Area Commander also dropped in to see the cadets,
sharing his story of starting as a cadet to his current position in the
RFS. Friday had the cadets display all the knowledge learnt with a
simulation of three different typical fire emergency situations.

Year 6 Camp
This term our Year 6 students went to Jindabyne Sport and
Recreation centre where they had plenty of fun
undertaking many different activities. Students left at 7am
on Wednesday morning with a quick stop in Cooma for a
break and hanging out in the park.
Students first activity at Sport and Rec was survival camp,
they teamed up and needed to build their own shelter to
keep them dry and start their own fire using a flint. Once
the fire was going, they cooked damper.
Students also took part in Archery and Circus skills working
on coordination, strength, and patience. Slider trikes were
a test of agility and determination.

Wendy HSLO
Wendy is the Home School
Liaison Officer for the
Queanbeyan District. Wendy
visits our school regularly to
review attendance and work
with families where
attendance is a concern.
Next year Wendy is looking
forward to taking on a more
proactive role within the
school and will be visiting
classes and participating in existing programs to be more
involved with our student community.
The school regularly sends out correspondence to families
where students have poor attendance. If you have
received one of these letters and are not sure how to
respond you may wish to meet with Wendy and discuss
the issues that are preventing your child from getting to
school each day. If you are interested in meeting with
Wendy or have any other questions in relation to
attendance, please contact Vanessa Willetts through the
front office.
QPRC Holiday Program
The popular QPRC School Holiday Program is back with
half, full or weekly options starting from the 4th of January

Peer Support
The Peer Support Program is a peer led, skills based,
experiential learning program. It encourages peer
connections throughout the school and assists students in
developing practical skills to enhance social and emotional
wellbeing.
The program empowers young people to support each
other and contribute positively to their school and
community. In a school context, it involves Year 10
students working with a small group of Year 7 students, to
ensure that essential skills are learned in a safe
environment.
This week’s workshop will prepare Year 9 participants for
effective implementation of the Peer Support Program in
2021. This workshop will give the participants, skills to run
Peer Support sessions, as well as life skills that they will
continue to use in everyday life.

Work Experience
During week 7 and 8 our Year 10 students engaged in work
experience. Work experience provides children with the
opportunity to learn about an occupation and/or industry
by observation and participation. Students can build their
knowledge, develop their skills and networks to aid them
to make informed decisions about their future study and
career paths. Students have really enjoyed being part of
this program.
Thank You
As we come closer to the end of the school year, we would
like to extend our thanks to you, our parent/carer
community, for demonstrating so much resilience and
patience towards the circumstances we faced together.
We strived together to get the best outcomes for our
students despite the pandemic and you have stayed by our
side the entire time. Thank you again.
The NSW Government will be sending a COVID-safe
summer pack to each student before the year ends. The
contents of the pack will help students maintain healthy
hygiene practices and to stay COVID-safe during the school
holidays.
Here are some quick tips to help you and your families stay
COVID-safe during the school holidays:
• Encourage your children to use their packs
whenever they leave the house
• Meet outdoors whenever possible and wear
sunscreen
• Meet in small groups
• Encourage good hand hygiene practices and
remind your children to cough and sneeze into
their elbow
• Keep up-to-date with the latest health
information by monitoring the NSW Government
website
