    Substation voltageregulators (SVR)

    Utility IVVC softwareapplication

    Utilities typically createoperational plans for deliveryof power within an acceptablevoltage range at a plannedpower factor. One large utilityevaluated Eatons Cooper PowerSystems technology to takea big-picture view of voltageregulators and capacitors tobetter optimize voltage levelsand VARs. The business case forconservation voltage reduction(CVR) is complex. Factorsinclude projected cost of fuel,emissions mitigation, and addedgeneration capacity with a goalof reduced expenditures andlower utility bills for customers.

    This large utility built the

    business case for technologyinvestment through the use ofEatons Cooper Power SystemsCymDIST distribution planningpower flow software.

    After justifying the businesscase, they deployed voltageregulators, capacitor banks, andYukon Volt/VAR managementsoftware - including IntegratedVolt/VAR Control - supporting

    peak load reduction throughvoltage and 24/7 load reduction.An additional benefit includedremote identification of capacitorbank problems. The result wasachievement of the financial andoperational benefits identified inthe CymDIST planning studies.

    Commercial and industrialapplication

    Industrial expansion in a smallMexican city had placed a heavyload on the citys aging power

    grid which had not kept pacewith growing energy demands.A cardboard manufacturer inthe city faced morning start-up with 10% voltage drops;it also was not uncommonto have intermittent voltagesurges of 12-15%. The extremevoltage swings were causingdamage to high-efficiencymotors, electronics, drives,and programmable logic controlscommon in paper processing.

    During a site visit to discussthe voltage problems, theEatons Cooper Power Systemstechnical representativealso recognized the limitedspace availability and thatthe substation was locatedinside the plant - an electricalequipment room with limitedaccess. The ideal solution for

    this type of installation wasEatons Cooper Power Systemsunique pad-mounted regulatorswith their complete dead-frontconstruction, tamper-resistantcabinet, and low profile.The electrical ratings ofthe three regulators in thisinstallation were:

    Military application

    Eatons Cooper Power Systemssupplied three pad-mountedvoltage regulators and a powertransformer without an on-loadtap-changer (OLTC) to replacethe aging OLTC equipment ina substation on a military base.Pad-mounted voltage regulatorswith tamper-resistant cabinetsand underground systemcompatibility ideally suitedthe application in which spaceinside the substation enclosurewas at a premium andinstallation of additional fencingwould be costly.

    After installation, the customerrequested the addition

    of 3-phase ganged operationof the single-phase voltageregulators. The additionalfunctionality was field installedwith communications boardsand fiber-optic cables addedto enable the Leader/Followercontrol scheme. The inexpen-sive, easy to install solution notonly met a customer need, butalso illustrates the flexibility ofthe Eatons Cooper PowerSystems CL-series voltageregulator controls.

    Modular IntegratedTransportable Substation(MITS)

    When Hurricane Sandy hitRockaway Beach, NY, thestorm surge left the 53rdStreet substation under 5feet of water, according tothe local utility spokesman.The substation was an air-insulated metal-clad design,which was particularlyvulnerable to the salt waterof the storm surge.

    A nearby contractor had recentlypurchased an Eatons CooperPower Systems ModularIntegrated TransportableSubstation (MITS) to replace

    an aging substation for upstateNew York. In the aftermath ofthe storm and with restorationof power a priority, he realizedthe MITS was the ideal solutionto the problem at RockawayBeach. The MITS is well suitedfor this type of application.

    The MITS is:

    Prewired, tested, and readyto install upon leaving the

    factory. This saves significantinstallation time during thecritical early hours of thedisaster recovery effort.

    Compact in design.All substation componentsfit neatly onto a singleskid making transportationmanageable, even in adisaster area.

    Designed using shield-grounded cable which, aremuch less susceptible tostorm surges.

    This particular MITS was

    designed with:

    A bank of three single-phasepad-mounted voltageregulators to providesuperior power quality.

    A 5 MVA power transformerto convert voltage from 34.5kV to 13.2 kV.

    A pad-mounted recloserfor feeder protection.

    A small single-phase power

    transformer supplying120 V power to the controlsystems integrated intothe unit.

    Extra features such as built-spill containment, telescopinflood lights, and in-cabinetdoor lights, which are helpfufor crews restoring powerat night.

    Once the MITS arrived onsite, the line crew, engineers,and operation personnelimmediately made the finalconnections between the

    damaged system and the MITand restored power.

    The MITS was the ideasolution to restorepower quickly atRockaway Beach.
