Transcript of AZORES - Alitours · town of Angra do Heroísmo ... JOIN THE FUN - at Sanjoaninas Festival on...

The Portuguese arrived in 1427 with the discovery of the island of Santa Maria. Due to its strategic geographic position, the archipelago was to become one of the axis of navigation between Europe, the Orient and America during the course of the 16th and 17th centuries. Having constituted an integral part of Portugal from the very outset, today the Azores is an autonomous region endowed with its own parliament and government.

Many of the island’s churches bear witness to the first period settlement. The 16th and 17th centuries were times of intensive building in the Azores, and left us interesting examples of popular, military and religious art, particularly in baroque style. The character of buildings was often adapted to suit the raw materials available, as well as reflecting the island’s distance from the cultural centers of Europe. The 16th century town of Angra do Heroísmo (on the island of Terceira), was the first urban centre built in the Atlantic. Today, its well preserved churches, palaces and fortress have earned it UNESCO World Heritage status. UNESCO has also recognized the cultural landscape of vineyards on the island of Pico, which are situated on old lava covered fields. Over the centuries, this rocky land has been transformed into wine producing soil protected by a vast network of stone walls. The museums of art and ethnography, together with the popular architecture of each island are also valuable parts of the region’s cultural heritage. They provide us with ways of discovering Azorean history and the life of its people throughout the centuries.

There are over 900 plants species in the Azores, many are relics from the “Laurissilva” cloud forest of the Tertiary period. This makes the islands a natural botanic garden of great interest to all plant lovers. Around 60 species are endemic, including Juniper, tree Heathers, Azorean Holly, Azorean Laurustinus, “Azorina vidalii”, “Picconia azorica”, African box wood, Azores Cherry Laurel, and more. Azorean birds are one of the main attractions in the region, particularly the “priolo” (Azorean Bullfinch, an endemic species), plus the Buzzard, Monteiro Storm Petrel, Cory’s Shearwater, Cliff Pigeon and common and Rosette Tern. The seas surrounding the Azores are rich in hundreds of species of fish and mollusks, as well as harboring large whales and dolphins. The islands are therefore perfect for divers.

The Azores evolved from volcanic eruptions over many millennia; and all round the islands are examples of curious volcanic phenomena. There are rounded craters or “caldeiras”, often filled with lakes, plus caves and deep tunnels formed by the eruptions. Ancient black lava covers many surfaces and the islands, ranging from shiny obsidian to soft and porous pumice stones with steam from bubbling hot springs.

On all nine islands, there are dozens of natural reserves, protected landscape areas and parks. These are part of the Regional Government’s programme to preserve the archipelago’s ecosystems. In recognition of this, the Azores has recently won a special commendation in the European Tourism and the Environment Awards. For more information about Azores Awards, please go to: www.visitazores.com

AZORES

Each of the nine islands of the Azores has its own charm and its own distinctive landscapes. They also have a number of things in common - lush green countryside and colourful flowers, volcanic phenomena such as crater lakes at the bottom of “caldeiras”, plus mysterious caves, rock clefts and tunnels and, in the case of Pico island, a majestic mountain. To visit the Azores is to enter a landscape unspoiled by human interference, a stunning environment that brings you closer to nature.

Food lovers will appreciate the varied traditional cuisine of the Azores. For example, if you like your fish straight out of the sea, then these islands will make the perfect holiday. If you also like meat, try the “Cozido das Furnas”, a dish boiled with volcanic steam. Main courses and sweet puddings come in many varieties, and fine cheeses are locally produced, particularly on São Jorge island. Home grown fruit includes pineapple and tropical passion fruit, while perfumed tea grows on the island of S. Miguel, in the only tea plantations in Europe. When it comes to complementing your meal with a drink, be sure to try the local red and white wines, plus the “aguardente” (firewater) from Graciosa island, Biscoitos wine from Terceira island and of course the “verdelho” wine from Pico.

Currency: As part of Portugal, the currency is Euro as well. Most of the restaurants, hotels and car-renting companies accept common credit-cards. But don’t expect credit cards to be accepted in smaller restaurants and residential. Be sure to carry small bills. There are places that it can be a problem to change bigger notes.Electricity: The voltages on all the Azorean islands is 220 volt alternating current. Don’t forget an adaptor/converter. Wall sockets are different from Canada.Languages: The Azores is part of Portugal, therefore the official language is Portuguese. Many Azoreans speak English and some speak French.

S. Miguel, located on the eastern side of the archipelago, is by far the largest of the

nine islands being 65km long, 14km at its widest and with an area of 750km. It is made up of 4

volcanic complexes and 6 municipalities. A very beautiful and varied island, ideal for long stays.

To the west of the island, Ponta Delgada, seat of the regional government, the main town and

port has preserved its historical beauty. It is a delight to explore the narrow cobbled streets

bordered by very well preserved period houses. Within

this municipality is the Sete Cidades, an extinct volcano crater of 40 sq. km, with two magnificent

lakes one green, and the other blue.

To the north of the island lies the town of Ribeira Grande, surrounded by fertile lands

yielding crops which include potatoes, passion fruit and tea ( the only place in Europe where

its grown) The dramatic “Lagoa do Fogo” (Fire lake) and delightful beaches nestling under high

cliffs. Nordeste, the northeast coast is a very special and relatively undiscovered region with

spectacular high cliffs plunging from high, flower covered plateau, fields and wooded mountains

into the sea. There’s so much to do during your stay on S. Miguel. Choose from whale & dolphin

watching, diving, deep sea game fishing, walking and much more.

The municipality of Povoação is in the south-east, where we find Furnas, one of the

largest thermal water source in the world. During Spring and Summer hedgerows of azaleas and

hydrangeas blow all over the valley. To the south of S. Miguel, the municipalities of Vila Franca do

Campo (the island’s first capital) and Lagoa are mountainous, agricultural and farming areas with

black cliffs disappearing into the ocean. Here pineapples, bananas and oranges are cultivated.

Taxi tours & regular tours, thematic tours, golf, jeep tours, adventure program, whale watching, diving, fishing, sailing.

Sata Rally Açores - end of February, Holy Ghost Festivities from April until September, Santo Cristo: happens every year on the 5th Sunday after Easter Sunday, Saint John on the 24th June and Saint Peter on the 28th June, Many classical festivals take place during summer time, , visit www.visitazores.com for more information on events.

TERCEIRA ISLAND

HOLIDAYS ON TERCEIRAThe Lilac Island

Terceira covers an area of 402 sq. km, is 30 km at its longest and 17.6 km at its widest. The island is a

plateau, with the Serra do Cume to the east, the Serra do Labacal with the highest point at Pico Alto

(rising to 808 m), and the Serra de Santa Barbara (rising to 1,023 m) to the west.

From Alto da Memória or from Monte Brasil belvedere one can see the historical centre of Angra do

Heroísmo with its small streets, churches, palaces, manor houses, monuments, squares and gardens

that were kept and maintained until today. That’s the reason why this historical centre is a UNESCO

World Heritage Site since 1983. Praia da Vitória, to the east, with its sandy beach is a charming small

town and, inland, the views from the 500m high point of the Serra do Cume, over the gigantic quilt

made up of green pastures separated by black volcanic stone walls are quite breathtaking. Terceira

caters to all interests from golf, exploring volcanos, walking, swimming in natural rock pools and

visiting the sixty-eight “Impérios” (small chapels of the Holy Spirit) from the 19th century, which are

scattered throughout the island. Then there are the colorful festivals and street bullfights (they pad

the bulls’ horn’s and bulls are never hurt) where the only casualty is young men’s wounded pride.

Private car tours & regular tours, golf, spa programs, whale watching, diving.

Holy Ghost Festivities - April until September, Sanjoaninas 24th June, Praia da Vitoria Festivities, Many music festivals during summer time, International Folklore Festival - August.

The island of Faial has become the resting place of transatlantic sailors. Horta, the main town,

has a cosmopolitan and exciting feel and, at bars and restaurants, one hears snippets of sailing stories

from around the world. The atmosphere at the legendary Peter’s Cafe, on the harbour-front, encapsulates

the very essence of nautical adventure. The island is dominated by the 1,043m cone of its vast Caldeira

(volcanic crater) which is accessed through a tunnel in the cone’s side. From mid-June to August the

island is a riot of blue as the hedges of hydrangeas burst into bloom.

Explore the green Caldeira (now a nature reserve) and Capelinhos, the rather eerie site of the

1957 volcanic eruption, which transformed the geography of the island. From Horta there are wonderful

and ever changing views of the Pico Mountain, 8km across the water. Horta is also an excellent base from

where one can visit the islands of Pico (all year round with several trips during the day) and São Jorge

(summer months only).

Private car tours, Jeep tours, Diving, Whale and dolphin watching, Fishing., Walking trails

views, à la carte lunch & dinner, snack bar and an outdoor café. Rooms open onto

balconies overlooking the pool area, with air conditioning, mini-bar, TV, internet.

The whale watching trip is from 3 to 4 hours, depending on weather conditions and the presence of whales and dolphins. There will be a briefing done by the tour leader explaining the activity and rules. Waterproof gear and bottled water will be supplied.

The Azores are considered one of the few remaining underwater paradises of the Atlantic Ocean. Large groups of manta rays, jacks, Atlantic bonito and tunas are common to be observed in the water column while scuba diving. Also frequent encounters with large and friendly groupers. There are more than 20 different diving spots around the islands Faial and Pico, as well as some offshore spots such as the Princess Alice

Bank. Before each excursion, the group’s experience and expectations will be assessed to be able to assure everyone’s satisfaction and safety. As a rule, the diving spot is chosen just before departure, taking into account the diver’s experience, preferences and weather and sea conditions. The Dive Master will brief the group about the chosen dive spot, its marine biodiversity and about the necessary measures to minimize the impact of scuba diving on the natural environment.

With a 11.3 meter cabined motorboat for recreational fishing, two different activities are available: trolling of pelagic coastal fish (Atlantic bonito, Skip Jack tuna, blue fish and Jacks), and bottom hook and line fishing (groupers, red porgy, breams and trigger fish).

SANTA MARIA ISLAND

Santa Maria Island is the oldest of the Archipelago. It is different from the other

islands in that it is flatter and much drier, warmer and with lower humidity. The west is the

flattest part of the island with low growing vegetation, the central area is mountainous,

and the rest is more heavily wooded with high cliffs and hillsides plunging into the ocean.

To the south is Praia Formosa, one of the best beaches of the Azores. There are quaint

tows, small white picturesque houses, Pico Alto, a high point (590 meters) from which you

can see the whole island, Vila do Porto, a 15th century town with a cliff top fort, black

volcanic rocks, fertile soil with vineyards, wheat and corn, a 110 meter waterfall and natural

GRACIOSA ISLAND

Oval in shape, the north and north-east areas are low and flat. Pico Timão, the

highest point, rises to 398 metres. Santa Cruz, the main town on the island is peaceful and

well preserved with many 18th and 19th century manor houses. The island’s only black

sand beach is at Praia and at Carapacho, the volcanic rocks form a natural swimming

pool. In Carapacho there’s a well know spa called Termas do Carapacho.

The coastline has many bays and the small off-shore islands provide a

sanctuary for the grebe and red-billed tern. The island has fresh fish and shellfish in

abundance and is famous for its cakes and sweets. Flemish-style windmills with onion-

shaped red domes and vineyards bordered by black basalt walls abound. There is a huge

volcanic crater, Caldeira do Enxofre, with lush vegetation and a spectacular lake beneath

vaulted rocks in the very heart of the volcano. This is a tranquil island, harder to reach

and therefore untouched by time.

Departure from Santa Cruz in direction to the Caldeira. Enter a large cave with an interior lake, a rare volcanic phenomenon. Surrounding the border of the crater, with a spectacular view of the island. Continue to the fishing village of Praia, with its windmills, Fenais and Carapacho; visit to the thermal baths. Going on west by Serra Branca and Vitoria to the viewpoint of Farol da Ponta da Barca. Return to Santa Cruz, stopping at Monte da Ajuda with the splendid view over Santa Cruz and the island.

One of the most magical of all the islands, S. Jorge is just 61 km long and 4.8

km wide. Its long backbone is dotted with lush green craters, while steep volcanic cliffs

drop to the sea below forming small coastal plains, the “fajãs”. The majority of fajãs are

accessible only by tiny, winding paths, and are home to small communities built around

whitewashed churches. S. Jorge is a walker’s paradise, boasting some of the best trails in

the Azores and the most spectacular scenery. Scrambling down the hillside to the peace

of a fajã is a highlight for many, while the centre of the island is higher with tranquil

views and verdant farmland. The dairy farming tradition is strong here, and the island is

famous for its delicious cheese. Freshwater clams farmed in Fajã do Santo Cristo lagoon

are a delicacy unique to the island. Velas, the island’s main village, is a charming little

town, built around a pretty harbor surrounded by cliffs. Portão do Mar, an 18th century

gateway to the city, opens on to narrow streets, with the parish church of São Jorge one

of the most noticeable buildings. Further west at Manadas, the 18th century Church

of Santa Barbara is one of the most distinguished of the Azores, with its elaborately

decorated interior.

Departure from Velas through the south coast. Stop at several viewpoints on the way to see splendid sights of the typical “Fajãs” (Ouvidor, Cubres and Caldeira Sto. Cristo). Visit the handicrafts cooperative with beautiful woven articles. Short visit to Calheta and Manadas visiting the 18th Century Church of Stª Bárbara. PICO ISLAND

The most instantly recognizable of the islands, Pico is dominated by majestic

Pico Mountain itself, a dormant volcano soaring to 7200 ft on an island barely 10 miles

wide. Views from the top are unbeatable on a clear day. Reminders of Pico’s volcanic

origins are clearly present throughout the island. Low black lava walls form tiny

enclosures for grape vines - Pico is known for its fortified verdelho wine - while the

simple houses are made from blocks of black stone. Lava formations, the “misterios”,

with caves and colourful flowers, create a distinctive landscape. The second largest

Azorean Island, with a wild and varied landscape of woods, lakes, gentle hills and steep

craters, Pico lends itself to exploring by car or on foot. Pico is perhaps the best island for

whale watching trips with frequent sighting of these amazing creatures off its shore. A

whaling museum at Lajes chronicles a long tradition and way of life that was banned in

1986. The picturesque village of Madalena, which grew up around a small harbour, has

the Church of Santa Maria Madalena dominating the main square.

This eco-sustainable resort resembles a village of stone houses. Set between the ocean and Pico Mountain, with a whale-watching tower. The restaurant serves vegetarian and regional dishes, outdoor dining terrace. Special wellness programmes, ikebana flower art classes, yoga classes held in the garden or in the zen room. Rooms are sunny, cozy and modern, with mini-bar, flat-screen TV, safe, phone, hair dryer. All suites and studios have kitchenette, some have fireplace. Fitness area, infrared sauna. Lajes do Pico is a 5-minute drive. Pico Airport is 40-minute drive.

Situated on Madalena’s waterfront, surrounded by the ocean on 3 sides and overlooks Faial Island. Outdoor swimming pool, 24-hour reception. The air-conditioned rooms open out onto private balconies with views of the ocean or Pico Mountain. All rooms include a flat-screen TV with satellite channels, mini bar, en suite bathroom. The in-house bar offers soft drinks and the renowned Pico Wine. Pico’s landscape is a UNESCO Heritage Site for wine culture. Free parking on site. WiFi is available in the business centre ($). Services include Airport shuttle, laundry, shoeshine, fax/photocopying, luggage storage, lift/elevator.

Bird watching in their natural habitat is easy with the help of binoculars which allow people to observe animal behavior. In Pico Island, there is a large concentration of tiny birds, birds of prey, like the Buzzard, which is the symbol of the Archipelago, as well as seabirds like “Cagarros” and “Garajaus”. The reason for such bird abundance on Pico Island is because there are a lot of shelters on the rocks, suitable places for bird nests, and abundant food keeping them on Pico.

Trail begins at Porto do Calhau, ends at Areia Larga and takes about 2 hours. Continue through grapevines until a windmill, a viewpoint from which you get a wide view of the vineyards and a good view of the small islands of Madalena. After leaving the vineyard area you will be close to the sea once again and the trail continues to Areia Larga.

Takes place in Terra Alta, Santo Amaro Parish. It consists of winding trails, tunnel shaped lush vegetation, vineyards and crop fields. It is also characterized by endless steps carved on the track and magnificent panoramic views over S. Jorge Island, mountain and ocean. Visit the Escola Regional de Artesanato (craftsmanship school), Museu Marítimo (sea museum), the first naval construction site in Azores and The Museu das Alfaias Agrícolas (agricultural tools museum).

FLORES & CORVO ISLAND

Known as the prettiest of all the islands, Flores lies at the most western point,

1,380 miles from Lisbon, and there’s an almost tangible sense of peace and tranquility.

Just 16 km long and 11 km wide, its rugged, green landscape is very different from the

other islands, with high basalt plateau dropping steeply, creating cascading waterfalls.

Seven lakes dot the centre, pastures surrounded by hydrangea cling to hillsides, and fast

running streams. Named Flores after the profusion of flowers found on the island, the

enchanting natural beauty makes it a walker’s paradise, especially along the coast where

the mountains cradle the bay.

The most remote of all the islands of the archipelago, Corvo is also the smallest

at just over four miles long and under three miles wide. The island is 1.5 hrs by boat

from Flores and home to around 430 people, for whom life has hardly changed over the

centuries. There’s just one road leading up the hill away from Vila Nova, the only village. In

the old part, narrow cobbled streets wind back from the harbor and our Lady of Miracles

Church has an enviable position looking out towards the sea.

Located in the Boqueirao area in Santa Cruz, close to the airport. Situated on a promontory, it offers wonderful panoramic views of the ocean and the island of Corvo. With 26 modern rooms, it’s a first-choice property for visitors looking for a decent level of comfort and a good range of facilities during their stay in Flores. Gym, games room and outdoor swimming pool, nice restaurant, serving international dishes and mouth-watering Azorean specialities such as yams with smoked sausage, roast beef and pork casserole. Vegetarian food upon request. Conference room, jogging area, free private parking, bar, laundry services. Rooms are modern and have minibar , TV, telephone, internet, room service, air-conditioning, safe deposit box, hairdryer, balcony or patio. WiFi in common areas.

Located on the ocean front about 1 km from Santa Cruz Village, and close to a natural lava swimming-pool. Hotel Ocidental, features a restaurant (open during the high season), a bar and lounge, a seawater swimming-pool, 2 tennis courts, 24-hour reception, terrace, meeting room, TV room, a diving centre with a guide and an annex building housing a game room and a bowling alley. All 36 rooms have in-room bathrooms, telephone and satellite TV, balcony with sea view. Laundry service, the organization of nautical activities (boat trips and tours to Corvo Island) and private parking.
