Azeotropic distillation

Azeotropic distillation is based on two different methods

I. Method with no Entrainer

a) Pressure swing distillationb) Hybrid method comprises of memebrane + distillation

II. Method with Entrainer

a) Homogeneous azeotropic (homoazeotropic) distillationb) Heterogeneous azeotropic (heteroazeotropic) distillationc) Extractive distillation

Method with no Entrainer

Presusure Swing distillation method is specifically employed in the distillation of Tetrahydrofuran/water purification or separation which works on the principle of changing pressure.

Hybrid method is employed in the processes like Dehydration of alcohols, removal Of Volatile Organic components, (VOC) from wastewater

Homogenous azeotropic distialtion is involved in the distioalltion of Hydrochloric acid/water + sulphuric acid , nitric acid/water + sulphuric water.

Heterogenous azeotropic distialltion comprises of the Dehydration of ethanol by using benzene , diethylether or pentane , separate acetic acid/water by using ethyl acetate.

Extractive distillation is usually involved ocarry pout the Acetone/methanol by using water

Industrial Relevance

Efficient and recovery and recycling of organic solvent in chemical based and other associated industry

Commonly used distillation method, because of its high performance and high o=purity solvent recovery

Employed in area where normal distillation does not works that is the azeotropic mixture.

Use of entrainer to produce the distillate effectively

Extractive distillation

It is one of the form of the Azeotropic Distillation which has been practiced since the traditional method of distillation has came no existence.

It is carried out in the presence of a miscible, high boiling, relatively non-volatile components

The component need to be separated using the extractive distillation involves removal of CO2 from natural gas, ‘‘break’’ the CO2/C2 azeotrope, etc.
