As I look back on the last few months I canrsquot help smiling as I think about the GCG 90th

Garden Party in Macon What an incredible event that was I have gotten so many positive comments from members across the state about this delightful party A big thank you goes to all those who helped make it all come together with an especially BIG thanks extended to

Betty Davis Marilyn McDonnell and Linda Owens for the countless hours they put into this convention

The Wild amp Wonderful Experience Youth Camp back in July at the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center was another fabulous event with nine of our 20 campers representing the Azalea

District This event was another great example of how things come together in the most amazing ways Two weeks before camp I was still looking for birdhouse kits A friend let me

know about an Air Force Veteran who had just moved to Walton County and may be interested in helping us I reached out to him and told him what I wanted as a kit and he did it for only the cost of the wood I also found myself in need of a male counselor so my

son Micah came to the rescue He loved it so much that he wants to do it again next year Thank you too to all the clubs that sent campers scholarship dollars and money to help with the cost of the camp

Barbara Horner and I also had the opportunity to visit the Cherokee Garden Library at the

Atlanta History Center to tour and find out more about the book Seeking Eden This is a beautiful book for your home or you could purchase a copy for your local library To order your copy visit httpwwwugapressorgindexphpbooksseeking_eden

Among other noteworthy points of pride are our accomplishments in support of our

scholarship program and other projects The Azalea District raffle raised over $7000 with money sent to the State Botanical Gardens Childrenrsquos Garden Thank you to all that purchased raffle tickets Additionally 24 clubs of the Azalea District have given $77000 to

the Dollars for Scholars program A total of seven named scholarships were also given by members and clubs We are proud too of the Blue Star and Gold Star HighwayMemorial

Greetings My Amazing Azaleas

I am having so much fun representing the Amazing Azaleas as your

District Director It has been an absolutely wonderful experience busy but rewarding These hot summer days have been filled with Garden Club events and visiting clubs and councils On most

evenings you can find me at the computer or answering calls about garden club I love every minute of it If I have not visited your club I still have a few dates available on my calendar between now and

next April when my term ends I would love to come visit your club and meet your members

Markers that are being planned all over the district to honor the service men and their families

Throughout my term my project has been a simple one I have challenged our members to plant native plants or trees in the Azalea District in honor of the 90th Anniversary of Garden Club I have attended several tree planting programs but one held special significance On

April 27th a dedication was held at Oconee Hills Cemetery The eight clubs of the Garden Club Council of Athens participated in the Oconee Hills Cemetery campaign to plant 20 oak

trees in their 100-acre urban forest Hurricane Irma brought devastating winds and days of soaking rain to the Athens area last September destroying many of the historic trees Among the hardest hit was the Oconee Hills Cemetery located along the Oconee River and

known for its beautiful tree canopy and the peaceful rolling landscape The Garden Club Council of Athens applied for a grant from the National Garden Clubs Natural Disaster

Fund The Council was awarded $3000 to be used for the replacement of trees What a wonderful day it was to see the cooperative efforts of our members come to fruition at the dedication of the newly planted trees at Oconee Hills Fall is a perfect time to continue this

tree planting effort so letrsquos plant trees Let me know when your tree planting is scheduled and I will bring my shovel to help The Azalea District is where the Garden Club movement began and I am so proud of the work that we continue to do in this district

As I close I want to remind everyone that we have the 60th Azalea District Fall Meeting

coming up soon It will be held in Hartwell at the new Hart County Agricultural Center on October 24 2018 Our speaker for the day will be nationally known television personality Joe Washington There will be local vendors raffle baskets and door prizes galore Come

enjoy the day with old friends and new ones This is a ldquonot to be missedrdquo event for all garden club members so plan to load up in your cars and come on to Hartwell See you there

Garden Club of Georgia Membership

Bonnie at Headquarters has informed Barbara Bourque that we have less than 9800 members in The Garden Club of Georgia This year A few small clubs are still outstanding But as you can see we fall short of the 10000-membership level we need to qualify for TWO $4000 college scholarships from the National Garden Club A number of clubs have disbanded Our Memorial Service at convention this past year was very moving and not brief Unfortunately we have a good number of our group pass away When clubs have many members in their 80rsquos it is unlikely that they will continue to be GCG members for another years Therefore the responsibility to cultivate more members falls on the rest of us Our students count on those scholarships and it would be a shame to lose a NGC scholarship Summertime most clubs donrsquot meet But officers are planning activities for the fall If each of our clubs would add one more member in Septemberearly October then we will mount the hurdle This is very doable ndash but we need your help Or sponsor Subscribing Members ndashremember there is a competition ongoing to see which club and which district can sponsor the highest percentage of subscribing members ($2500 membership fee paid to GCG directly not to your club counts as a tax deduction ndash see attached form) Bellmere GC and Dogwood District won the contest announced at spring convention Challenge your membership to sponsor some Subscribing Members (their daughters spouses neighbors and friends) and your clubdistrict could too be a winner in this contest

Garden Club of Georgia Inc and desires association without the necessity of becoming a member of a

local garden club A Subscribing Member shall be eligible to participate in all programs and events

Dues are $2500 per year for the Subscribing Member Reminders will be sent prior to

Gray Garden Club members enjoyed celebrating National Garden Week observing the proclamation being signed by Gray Mayor Ed Barbee and Jones County Commission Chair Chris Weidner Members placed flower arrangements in public places in NGW honor Signs recognizing the week were placed at Depot Garden Area in Gray Round Oak Memorial Garden and local businesses Members along with the Kiwanis Club held a daylily sale at the W E Knox Civic Center June 9 2018 with daylilies donated by Fay Brown A Daylily display was held in the Knox Center with 76 entries Winners were Jean Favors 1st place Mary Musselman 2nd place and Gray Health and Rehab 3rd place and best in show to Gray Health and Rehab Also during Garden Week members enjoyed playing bingo and interacting with residents at Lynn Haven Health and Rehab Members worked in the depot area in Gray enhancing the beauty of the area Brochures about Garden Week and raising and showing daylilies were placed at the Local Ace Hardware and the Knox Center

At their annual picnic held at the Hart County Botanical Garden club president Janet Massey presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Sandra Brown honoring 50+ years of dedication and hard work as a member of the Pine Tree GC in Hartwell

Pine Tree GC spent the summer keeping their on-going project of

Weve all read in Garden Gateways of the many students who have benefitted from Garden Club of Georgia scholarships It is gratifying to know that we are helping to build a greener Georgia more knowledgeable gardeners designers and farmers and more future garden club members by helping interested students attend colleges and universities for study One important source of these scholarship dollars comes from the sale of our annual engagement calendars The 2019 edition (This Land We Love Expressions 2019) will be another beautiful gift-worthy and useful calendar for the new year Youll enjoy beautiful photos of all of our state parks as well as unique and beautiful flower arrangements Be sure to place your clubs order no later than September 1 The order form is on the GCG web site under Publications

The Milledgeville Garden Club Council hosted an event recently in ldquoThe Club at Lake Sinclairrdquo for the Azalea District Board Meeting of the Garden Club of Georgia with over fifty members in attendance

This was an opportunity to provide better knowledge of the functionaladministrative works by various club members as well as gardening ideas After a delicious luncheon by Aubrey Lanes the hostesses again welcomed our guests and encouraged them to tour our Historical Antebellum Colonial Town of Milledgeville

The Scholarship Committee is extremely grateful for the support of our 2017 giving campaign The awards of $7500000 among 31 deserving students were outstanding Due to the membership status in 2017 of over 10000 members in GCG we were allowed to submit two studentsrsquo applications for NGC

Scholarships Awards Our two applications Lucas Brock and Ali Ikner were both awarded $400000 each for their studious endeavors

However as you may have learned GCG has dropped below 10000 in membership We must move quickly to continue the

opportunity to send two deserving students scholarships applications to NGC for the next award period

Kristin VanHoose and her husband David own and operate the mail-order nursery Hydrangeas Plusreg

and wholesale Amethyst Hill Nursery in Aurora Oregon From an initial collection of about 70

cultivars of hydrangeas in 1999 they have increased their offerings to more than 250 different

varieties cultivars and close hydrangea relatives many of which are rare and unusual The nursery

serves as a test garden for several of the countryrsquos hydrangea breeders

want to study and learn about the genus Hydrangea its species and cultivars as well as its

culture habits hardiness and performance A fascination with the hydrangea in all of its

Greetings from Piccadilly Farm

We have shortened Fall Retail Season Open from Friday Sept 7 (FridaysSaturdays) and closing Saturday Oct 6th New

hours are 9 am to 4 pm

The weather brewed up some unpleasant changes over the summer at Piccadilly Farm A tornado hit here on June 2nd which

knocked down over 25 trees and damaged many more It took over a month of our working plus two visits from our arborist to

clean up We were blessed to only have structural damage to some steps in the garden with no injuries to cats or people We

rode out the storm ourselves in the pavilion because it hit without warning - it was scary and one of our cats is still very

frightened by storms now All the rain also created perfect conditions for a fungal attack on our beloved hellebores in the

gardens and in production Hellebores like to stay dry so they have not liked the weather conditions this year If you have also

had this problem- remove damaged black leaves from your hellebores Also clear away excess mulch and dead leaves from

around the plants Dispose of removed material by putting it in the trash as this fungus is spread through the air to other plants

The 27th Annual Hellebore Days will be held two weekends in 2019 - March 1-2 amp March 8-9

Retail Sales Area has been moved See attached map below for more details Garden Walks offered on September 7 amp 8 at 10

am for our Grand Opening

The third important change that is brewing is that Bill and Valerie are working towards semi-retirement so that we can have

more time to spend with family (did we mention grandchildren) traveling and gardening So we are reducing the number of

days that we are open for plant sales beginning in 2019 We will be open the first and second weekends (Fridays and Saturdays

9 am to 4 pm) of March April and May and two additional weekends in the fall The fall weekends will be scheduled based on

the UGA football schedule to help avoid the traffic problems caused by home games

Retail Schedule will change beginning in 2019 Open for eight weekends a year - 6 in Spring 2 in Fall

Because of our schedule change we encourage our Piccadilly Farm customers to take advantage of shopping by

appointment We are able to give you more personal attention during an appointment than we can when we are open to the

public Please make your appointment by sending an email request to infopiccadillyfarmcom Include your name contact

information with cell phone number and desired datetime of visit If you are flexible about when you can come give us a

couple of options so we can pick the one that works best for our schedule We ask that you send the email a minimum of 3

business days in advance of your desired visit date understand that we may not be available on the date andor time requested

and show up at the appointed time and date or at least call to let us know that your plans have changed We prefer emailed

appointment requests over phone calls so that we have all your information in writing We do not always have access to pen and

paper or our calendars when out working around the farm and our memory is not as good as it once was You can also email us a

plant order to be picked up at a set time if you already know what you need and donrsquot have time for an appointment

Markers that are being planned all over the district to honor the service men and their families

Throughout my term my project has been a simple one I have challenged our members to plant native plants or trees in the Azalea District in honor of the 90th Anniversary of Garden Club I have attended several tree planting programs but one held special significance On

April 27th a dedication was held at Oconee Hills Cemetery The eight clubs of the Garden Club Council of Athens participated in the Oconee Hills Cemetery campaign to plant 20 oak

trees in their 100-acre urban forest Hurricane Irma brought devastating winds and days of soaking rain to the Athens area last September destroying many of the historic trees Among the hardest hit was the Oconee Hills Cemetery located along the Oconee River and

known for its beautiful tree canopy and the peaceful rolling landscape The Garden Club Council of Athens applied for a grant from the National Garden Clubs Natural Disaster

Fund The Council was awarded $3000 to be used for the replacement of trees What a wonderful day it was to see the cooperative efforts of our members come to fruition at the dedication of the newly planted trees at Oconee Hills Fall is a perfect time to continue this

tree planting effort so letrsquos plant trees Let me know when your tree planting is scheduled and I will bring my shovel to help The Azalea District is where the Garden Club movement began and I am so proud of the work that we continue to do in this district

As I close I want to remind everyone that we have the 60th Azalea District Fall Meeting

coming up soon It will be held in Hartwell at the new Hart County Agricultural Center on October 24 2018 Our speaker for the day will be nationally known television personality Joe Washington There will be local vendors raffle baskets and door prizes galore Come

enjoy the day with old friends and new ones This is a ldquonot to be missedrdquo event for all garden club members so plan to load up in your cars and come on to Hartwell See you there
